But in various places in India women are discriminated and marginalized at every face of the society whether it is political participation, social participation, economic participation, access to education, and also reproductive healthcare. Women are found to be economically very poor all over the India. A few women are involved in services and other activities. So, they need economic power to stand on their own legs on per with men. Other hand, mostly it has been observed that women ratio is found to be less literate than men ratio. According to 2001 census, rate of literacy among men in India is found to be 76% whereas it is only 54% among women. Thus, enhancing education among women is of very significant in empowering them. It has also noticed that some of women are too pathetic to their work. They consume less diet but work more. Therefore, from the health point of issue, women folk who are to be weaker are to be made stronger. Another issue is that workplace harassment of women. There are so many cases of rape of girl, kidnapping of women, dowry harassment, and so on. Due to these reasons, they require empowerment of several kinds in order to protect themselves and to secure their purity their dignity, and their respect. To sum up, women empowerment can not be possible unless women come with and help to self-empower themselves. We noticed that there is a need to formulate reducing feminized poverty, promoting education of
Education is the most important in the critical rank for reducing gender inequalities. Women’s status socioeconomically has increased with the time change, but only because they have more means of entry to improved circumstances. Forms of gender inequality still exist in our society, even in the highly developed world. Sex-segregation
However before such empowerment grew in women and the female circle, women had to be live through a male dominated society in th...
Women throughout history have fought very hard to earn a respectable place in society, despite a patriarchal society and male dominance that remains. The roles of women have developed widely over time. Women frequently fall inferior to men politically, socially, and intellectually. This intellectual gap restricted many women to the role of a domestic caretaker. For others, education is the foundation to discover new ideas and new ways of thinking.
The narrow view of the world that we often experience prevents us from even engaging for or against ideals that we would take on, given the chance. We often become deaf to opportunity, however. While it may seem we are complicit in many of the injustices that our society perpetuates, often times we are not even aware of the issue. An uninformed decision will be as bad as no decision. Many problems exude from the state of our social values. The role that women play in society is slowly changing from that of a ‘nurturer’ to any role a woman strives for. Progress has come through much pain and the hope is one day there will be real equality in the results of our societies spoken and unspoken laws.
Throughout history and even today women are regarded as inconsequential. They are chattels or servants, a person without rights. In some present instances, women are struggling to show that they do have rights and can make a contribution to society if given the chance.
The principal of empowerment lies in the capability of a woman to control her own purposes. Previously in the 70’s, being an empowered women wasn’t an option. They didn’t have equal capabilities such as education to achieve literacy, health and equal access to resources and opportunities such as employment with same wage as men. However, to use those rights, skills, resources, and opportunities to make deliberate decisions such as providing through management opportunities and involvement in political organizations, weren’t an option either. Also women wanted to live without the fear of pressure and violence threw out those historical times. Because the stereotype for women was the proper place for them to be was home while men worked to provide for his family. These boundaries have made men the guardians of what has been taught and understood concerning gender and the placement of men and women in society. However, this perspective has changed over the years. Women have now stepped outside of those powerless limits of domesticity and have now been recognized as gender equality. Women today in society now have strengthen opportunities for a proper education, assurance for sexual and reproductive health and rights, abolish gender discrimination in employment by decreasing women’s dependence as a house wife as an employment, increased women’s share of seats in
Unequal gender equality in this sphere perpetuate negative gender stereotypes that do not allow women to participate in other areas of society. Gendered social institutions, formal and informal laws, social norms and practices play a large role in maintaining the stereotypical norms within society because they “guide human behaviour and shape human interactions” (Bransia, Klasen, and Ziegler, 2013). For example, when a universal social norm in a country values male education over female girls are less likely to go to school when families have to chose between sending a son or a daughter. Therefore, female literacy rates will be lower in that country because girls have not been allowed the opportunity to go to school. These lower levels of literacy make it so that they are unable to gain meaningful employment in the economic sector, and up the the macro level cannot participate in the political sector by running for elected office because they do not have the same resources as males in their society. When gender inequality exists in social institutions a negative cycle is perpetuate, which expands to all areas of women’s participation in society. The negative outcome exists not only for women, but also for the whole society (Bransia et al, 2013). As discussed previously, women’s roles in economic and political areas benefits not just them, but society as a whole, and the same circumstance exists in social institutions. Improvements to economic and human development are positives aspects associated with gender equality in social institutions (Ferrant and Nowacke, 2015). Therefore, high gender equality in social institutions are associated with development outcomes, like the development of women’s rights in society. Since social institutions play a large role in guiding human behaviour and shaping human actions, when they support gender equality and
This course of women and gender studies, as would all courses, have produced awareness by coherently explaining the situations women are facing in the world today. One may not know of theses situations until taught. By learning of these occurrences, one can properly act upon them. Many women and men have taken the opportunity to attend classes on women’s and gender studies and have since then made strides to make a difference in the unjust society that must be faced.
Education has been the hurdle keeping women from gaining equality in society, by separating them from their male counterparts. Women who sought higher education were considered, heathens and the most disgusting beings that would perish. Without education to empower them, women were stripped of their dignity and rights by their husbands and other men of the community. The struggle for women higher education is a battle that still has not reached its citadel.
“You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation” Brigham Young ("Good reads," 2008). I have started with this remarkable quote to support my topic and how the women education is important for any community and nation. I have chosen to write about the women’s education rights in Afghanistan I believe that the education of women is necessary for any country’s development. In fact, women are the mothers, sisters and daughters and they deserve to be a part of the society. Also, Women should be treated the same as men, so they can be productive in their countries and contribute to its development. Women need to be independent and have their right to study and join schools and colleges. Actually, they can be effective citizens if they have enough support. Woman who can take an active part in the development process improve the economy power of the country raise the level of economic and for her family, can raise the level of personal income. Women need to have the basic knowledge, so they can deal with different life issues. They need to be educated, so they can be aware of different diseases and participate in the development of their country. Also, the lack of education for women can be a reason of social and economic problems. This will not help to develop their country if government doesn't believe in the importance of the education for women. As Nelson The role of women's education in development. Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” ("Good reads," 2008).
It is argued that societies who supports education for women are more prone to experience dramatic social progress. It is further explained that when women enters the workforce, they contribute to their countries' economic prospects, and this leads to their economic independence thus improve their stature both at home and in the community. According to the report, globalization is the 'antidote to the intolerant fundamentalism' that helps eliminate regressive taboos responsible for the promotion of gender discrimination. When discussing the impact of globalization on women, Subhalakshmi (2012) looked at women workers in India. She explained that globalization has opened up various employment opportunities for Indian women, hence increasing their purchasing power, self-confidence and independency. This, in turn, is seen as a potential way to increase equality between the sexes and afford women an equal stance in
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, etc.” (textbook citation). The right to be free from discrimination based on sex is a very important part of this universal human rights legislation, as it is also outlined in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESR citation). When this specific portion of these human rights legislations is read, the majority of individuals will think of the rights of women. This is because for much of history, women were not given all the rights and freedoms set forth in universal legislations simply because of their sex, and articles had to be implemented into universal human rights legislations to ensure that this form of discrimination did not happen again. The human rights of women are an extremely important subsection of international human rights. Women have been placed as second-class citizens for much of human history, and although women are not overtly discriminated against in human rights legislations anymore. Women face gender-specific violations of their human rights in society, and governmental bodies often neglect to give women the justice they deserve for the violations they have faced (India rape test article). Much of the time choices are taken away from women and they are easily victimized within society. Every society in the world has faced some sort of gender-specific discrimination at some time in human history, and in some countries the violations of women’s human rights are ongoing and extreme. For this reason, the human rights of women are an extremely important topic, as the struggle to have th...
For women in India, the last century has marked a great amount of progress, but at times it has been as stubborn as all the centuries before it. Women have been expanding their roles in society, at home, and even politics with female Prime Minster Indira Gandhi. Gender roles are ingrained deeply, however, and that is no more apparent than in the current rape epidemic. Specifically the last 40 years have been some of the most promising for Indian women, but they have also seen an 875% increase in rape cases (Park). The answers to why this is happening, and why it is happening now may open up a much deeper issue. The social climate is changing; a power struggle between genders steadies the quantity of violence against women. Meanwhile, their empowerment to speak out and hold a rapist accountable brings it to the attention of the world. A longstanding injustice that has been occurring right bellow the surface for years may have reached its boiling point.
The modern world has resulted in earnings, wages and salaries for the women similar to that of men, but the women are continuously facing inequalities in the work force (Andal 2002). This2 can be attributed to the pre-established notion that women shall not be given access to finance or communication with the world outside of the home which is highly unethical and unfair (Eisenhower, 2002). In the past, they were considered as the underprivileged ones which were not thought of having equal rights but this fact has changed now. The status of women can be explicitly defined as the equality and the freedom of the women.
Violence against women appeared from a long time ago and happened in every country. It caused pain in both mental and physical for women. There were so many people trying to stop this problem but it was still not completely fixed. There are many reasons that lead to this issue all over the world. After many surveys and investigations, we realized that the main reason is Discrimination and Unequal power. Some legends and stories in the past made people think men’s role is more important than women’s role in society. And because men are stronger, more active than women so they can do more work. This also makes people think men deserve more rights than women. They soon forced on human’s mind that men are also...
