World War One During the first world war, there were over 65 million male soldiers from 30 different countries. These soldiers were husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, and friends. Millions of these men left to fight a battle they would never return from. World War I, also known as the Great War or the War to End All Wars, took place in France, Italy, Russia, and Turkey in 1914 and ended in 1918. The war was between countries such as Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Turkey. This war was different from any other due to its use of “advanced weapons” such as machine guns, barbed wires, and tanks. There are many different causes of World War I. The underlying causes were imperialism, militarism, and the alliances formed between several European countries.
Imperialism was a cause as well as context for World War I. More specifically, British imperialism was a significant cause of World War I. German propaganda illustrates how Britain stretched its empire across the world by comparing it to an octopus whose tentacles are latched onto different parts of the globe. Militarism is a system that places importance on military power. It provoked fear within nations. Multiple countries longed for a stronger military because it was a sign of dominance over the other countries. Throughout the years, countries invested more and more money into their armaments, which are military equipments and weapons. Germany was in the lead, with an investment of about 100 million British pounds in 1914. This shows the country’s motivation to improve their military in order to defeat the other nations.
