My experience as a Clinic Counselor for my Legal Studies Internship at the Watsonville Law Center (WLC) has been surreal and eye opening. This semester I have learned a lot about myself, about organizations that provide services low-income individuals, and about who has rights in the U.S. The major lesson I learned from completing this internship is that any goal we have is achievable if we are persistent and determine to accomplish them. Going into HCOM 398 my main goal was to gain experience so I could enhance my possibility of landing a job upon completing my internship hours. I’m glad , I took this HCOM 398 Legal Studies Internship class, because upon completing my hours in a timely manner I was offered a part-time seasonal job as a Administrative Assistant/ Intake Specialist with the WLC. Yes, this internship has enabled me to better understand my major which has help me grasp how my course work has prepared me to enter the career i chose to follow. Through this internship I was able to accomplish another goal, which is to assist low-income people in the Central Coast with their legal issues. When I completed my hours I found myself wanting to prolong my experience. Fortunately, for me, my internship turned into a part-time job with the possibility of turning into a full time position. I feel a lot more competent in being able to translate legal terminology from english to spanish and vis-versa. Now, I can conduct legal intakes related to Consumer Law, Employment Law, Workers Compensation, and Family Law, professionally and in a timely manner. It was extremely important to me to learn what follow up questions I should ask when interviewing a client, this internship provided me with the opportunity to learn alongside a professional. My internship began with a short orientation of KPMG’s office located in the Wells Fargo Building of downtown Minneapolis. After some introductions and a few training sessions that outlined what was expected of us in terms of the rules and laws we were required to follow including disclosure of client and firm information and independence affidavits, for example, we were briefed on our trip to Orlando for National Internship Training which would take place the following work day. Training for Partnership-focused federal tax interns would last a whole week filled with events and educational seminars that would introduce us to tax fundamentals and software tutorials that would be helpful during our time with KPMG. National Internship Training would be the primary training session for every KPMG intern in the nation, hosting thousands of interns assigned to all pillars of accounting (audit, tax, and advisory). On May 25th 2016 I officially started an internship with Montgomery County’s Department of Mental Hygiene. The department consists of one hard working woman named Sara Borenko who was my supervisor and boss throughout this internship. One of the main duties of Sara’s job is the funding of community programs that are aimed towards helping the mental health community. In fall 2015 I took a class called Community Psychology and while working at this internship; I applied what I had learned from that class and used it to my advantage. Some of the lessons I applied included social oppression, community organizing, stress and coping, and emotional support. Being given the opportunity to intern with the staff at the Family Resource Center in the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) has been a tremendous learning experience thus far. By completing so many hours and being at various locations, I made many business contacts that will last me a lifetime. Each and every physical therapy setting I experienced was different, which gave me many viewpoints of the physical therapy career. The physical therapists and physical therapy assistants I met offered a new perspective into their career and daily life, which helped me decide on the direction I want to take my career. Before the internship, I thought judges were of course humans, but I was hoping they were nice. I thought it was going to be a bit intimidating, but I knew I looked up and aspired their profession. It was like the day I was going to meet my judge I was so nervous, yet I looked forward to it. I remember I was surprised different Judges would run their courtrooms differently. I thought they would kind of have a similar system for things, which they sort of do, but not completely. Generally speaking, the Judges are great individuals and are very unique. Most of the Judges have lived pretty interesting lives and seem to enjoy their jobs. The Judges seem to be very knowledgeable, and very considerate of the Jury, court reporters, and their clerks. The judges of course seem neutral when in front of the jury as expected. For example, Judge Lippitt, does not allow anytime to speak over each other in her court room she is always saying that they have to be respectful there is a human being recording this, referring to the court reporter. Then, she is very considerate of the Jury and their time, she will tell them the trial is longer at times to make them happy if it ends early. Further, Judge Lippitt really cares about the jury instructions and that they are as neutral as possible. Something I have learned from Judge Lippitt, is that you have to be very careful as a judge to notice when attorney’s are acting a little suspicious. Another very significant lesson I have learned from Judge Lippitt is that preparedness and awareness is really important.

It has been a while since I started at the internship and I am really glad I decided to work here. I think the experience in this area is a good preview of my career and future. The quarter has finally come to an end, and with that, I close out my internship and this class that went along with it. It was a great experience and I leave equipped with a new set of skills that are preparing me for the world ahead. As I write this reflection paper, I think back to the very first week when I set up two goals for myself to focus on and hope to achieve throughout the following weeks. My first goal was to develop a better understanding of myself within the work place, and my second was to develop a strong network to jumpstart my career. Both of my goals were achieved, however, I don’t feel that either of my goals will ever be complete. I believe that you can always formulate a better understanding of yourself, and you can always network to develop a stronger tree of connections. I started this internship with the thought that I was going to learn everything I could about the sales department, so that I could successfully work with hotel sales departments when I was a corporate meeting planning.
