My experience as a Clinic Counselor for my Legal Studies Internship at the Watsonville Law Center (WLC) has been surreal and eye opening. This semester I have learned a lot about myself, about organizations that provide services low-income individuals, and about who has rights in the U.S. The major lesson I learned from completing this internship is that any goal we have is achievable if we are persistent and determine to accomplish them. Going into HCOM 398 my main goal was to gain experience so I could enhance my possibility of landing a job upon completing my internship hours. I’m glad , I took this HCOM 398 Legal Studies Internship class, because upon completing my hours in a timely manner I was offered a part-time seasonal job as a Administrative Assistant/ Intake Specialist with the WLC. Yes, this internship has enabled me to better understand my major which has help me grasp how my course work has prepared me to enter the career i chose to follow. Through this internship I was able to accomplish another goal, which is to assist low-income people in the Central Coast with their legal issues. When I completed my hours I found myself wanting to prolong my experience. Fortunately, for me, my internship turned into a part-time job with the possibility of turning into a full time position. I feel a lot more competent in being able to translate legal terminology from english to spanish and vis-versa. Now, I can conduct legal intakes related to Consumer Law, Employment Law, Workers Compensation, and Family Law, professionally and in a timely manner. It was extremely important to me to learn what follow up questions I should ask when interviewing a client, this internship provided me with the opportunity to learn alongside a professional.
