Andrew Carnegie and his philanthropy made him a hero because he helped more people than harm in the long run, by this I mean he helped other countries. He also sets a great example to everyone that helping others or someone is not something you need to wait to do when you are no longer living. If someone needed help and even a stable person had the choice to help but until they are no longer alive has little meaning. Perhaps it would be too late when the person isn’t around anymore. Its about what someone can do to help when they are around, it is about what a person can do in the time of need even if it is not much but a little of anything can go a long way. He started off in life rather poor and had to go long ways to help his family by finding a job to help his family financially as I said because they weren’t rich. He went from paying $20 annually for rent for the place he was living at to renovating a mansion for $10,000,000. Instead of staying in the situation he was in as a young kid he decided to give himself a great life by working for it. He goes over how a man with a plentiful amount of money who only keeps it to himself is basically a waste and he even says in (Doc B) ‘The man who dies rich dies a disgrace’. In that quote he is basically saying that a rich man should give and help while he is still around. By dying rich this shows that he didn’t help as much as he could, and he kept his fortune to himself. Growing up as a young boy in Scotland, Carnegie's family was not very wealthy. They immigrated to America where Carnegie went from working as a bobbin boy, making $1.20 per hour, to making millions of dollars later in his life. Carnegie did not become wealthy by unethical means, as a Robber Baron would. Instead he worked very hard and wise to get to where he was during that time. Andrew carnegie was an obvious Captain of Industry. He was born into a family that was very poor, his father was a weaver that nothing big was expected to come from little Andrew. However, soon came the Industrial revolution, and with that, came more machinery. So much machinery in fact, that Carnegie’s dad got replaced and fired from his weaving job, because of these machines. Soon, his father found himself begging for jobs to be able to help his family. The family became so poor in fact that Carnegie's mother had to start working to help support the family.Carnegie once said "I began to learn what poverty meant."
Andrew Carnegie was a well known businessman who made a fortune with his major company, Carnegie Steel. But the hot topic is not about the company, rather the man. Some claim Carnegie was a robber baron who treated his workers terrible, just so he could get his money. Carnegie’s family wasn’t the most affluent in the country, they were actually desperately poor, however, their influence on Andrew and his brother Tom, was rich. Carnegie’s mother, Margaret Carnegie, taught him the thirst to survive and thrive. She taught him to put his needs before the needs of anyone else. This greatly affected his business and business techniques later in life. His father, William Carnegie, was a handloom weaver, who believed in making conditions better for the working man and taught him the value of helping others less fortunate. The big question of it all is, “ Did Andrew Carnegie’s philanthropy of wealth make him a hero?” From the documents I’ve read I can conclude yes, Andrew Carnegie’s philanthropy of wealth did make him a hero.
Andrew Carnegie was a man who actually believed strongly in using the money gained in a charitable way. According to Carnegie in a review titled “Wealth,” he stated, “…man of wealth thus becoming the mere agent…for his poorer brethren… doing for them better than they would or could do for themselves” (Document E). By the end of his life, he had donated up to $60 million, which funded more than 1,600 libraries. He substantially gave all his money away. A humble and virtuous man would yearn to do such a thing. There were actually other men who owned businesses who would be capable of doing similar acts of kindness. Yet again how could they, when their opponents were invincible? George Rice was a victim to Rockefeller’s colossal company, stating “…sought for the reason…giving it discriminating rates and privileges of all kinds as against myself and all outside competitors” (Document H). His business was unable to challenge one like Rockefeller’s. They should provide supervised opportunities for the poor to improve themselves. The rich man should know “the best means of benefiting the community is to place within its reach the ladders upon which the aspiring can rise- free libraries, parks, and means of recreation, by which men are helped in body and mind” (Carnegie p. 28). Andrew Carnegie was an Entrepreneur and a Philanthropist. He was born in Dunfermline, Scotland in the United Kingdom. He was born on November 25, 1835. He passed away on August 11, 1919 at the age of 84 in Lenox, Massachusetts. Andrew had little or no formal education, but he grew up in a family that had beliefs in knowing the importance of books and learning. His father was handloom weaver by trade. Andrew Carnegie was best known for being a self-made steel tycoon and he was one of the wealthiest 19th century Unites States businessmen. He donated a great deal of his money to help the expansion of the New York Public Library.
