History is an important aspect of life that effects everyday life for everyone, and there are many reasons for why it should be valued. Valuing history allows people to not repeat the same mistakes, and this can be applied in relation to preventing war as well as discrimination against minority groups; ensuring the Earth remains habitable and simply in preventing individual mistakes in everyday life.

A common saying that most people would’ve heard before is that, ‘history repeats itself’, and it’s important to value history so as to learn from your lessons and not make the same mistakes. One basic way, is that you use history every day to know how you should dress for that particular day, based on the previous’ days weather. But there’s a much more serious way in which history is important to the weather. Climate change, specifically global warming, is serious issue that will continue to get worse without appropriate measures being takes. However, the issue of global warming only came to light because of history, and without history there would be no effort to make a change. Global warming is the term for the Earths’ average surface temperature, increasing every year. By scientists observing how the temperature increases every year, this use of history lead to the discovering that global warming is occurring. After centuries of racism and slavery, many social movements occurred, led by people such as Malcom X and Martin Luther King. While these movements did not end racism, they did vastly minimize racism and helped achieved equal rights for people or colour. Though people of colour eventually gained their human rights, despite still not always being treated equally; people did not learn from this and history continued to repeat itself through the discrimination of other minority groups. This is especially seen today through the discrimination of gay people. Social movements to gain rights for LGBT have been occurring for the last few decades, and have been seeing improvements specifically in the last decade, with many countries finally granting them equal rights. However, it is a battle that is still being fought, with countries such as Australia continuing to discriminate against them.
