Ancient cities show several of the same aspects as modern day societies. That is because many of the same features were passed on to allow cities to be able to grow and expand. There are certain aspects that each city requires for it to be considered successful. Cities are only as strong as their citizens allow and to ensure a thriving community, trust and unity must be built within the population. People must be willing to work for and with each other to help the city advance. Of course, to grow, this means the building of trust and unity are required as well. Likely the most important function of a city, a working government is used to keep law and order within the city. Cooperating and law abiding citizens are crucial to the growth of civilization, and if that is not possible, neither is a city. Government also brings a sense of unity towards its people since each citizen is ruled over the same people, as well as the same set of laws. Exclusively for ancient cities, religion was a part of daily life. Most religions in ancient cities were polytheistic, meaning they worshipped multiple gods. This brought people together since they bonded over the worship of the same god and went from there. As aforementioned, religion and government go hand in hand where the gods create most of the rules, and the kings and priests enforce them on the public. Activities like ceremonies and rituals brought people together as well. In in modern world, religion has substantially lost its value and importance in daily life in cities as a whole. Take places in the middle east, for example, where religion has become the cause for conflict. Though, it still shows that religion has brought people together to help trust and aid one
The government serves to the city-state and the people that live in it. I think that Julius
It is important to start with Socrates view since, as mentioned before some of his ideas apparently come from Socrates’. Socrates gives his idea of the city in book II of the Republic; he presents his vision of a “simple city” which represents a city that only satisfies the basics needs of the people. In a dialogue with Glaucon Socrates exemplifies a city that only covers food and shelter arguing that the only thing that a person need to live is what they need to survive, even though as he mentions people tent to think that “that we are not individually self-sufficient, but have many wants”(Republic 60). Glaucon says then, that the representation of Socrates’s city it’s a “for pigs” and that a well structure city goes beyond all natural needs. Hence, Socrates starts adding to this city saying that it must begging with the over sight of education. Also, Socrates at the end mentions that people in the city must have control over the music and education, meaning the to be control over the media and the religion. Moreover, Socrates gives examples of the different roles in society and says that the only thing that creates harmony in the city if it everyone plays their role.
The reason They built their cities this way was for function, protection, looks, and entertainment. here are some specific reasons for the certain things. They put aqueducts in their cities so they could have running water and be able to have public bathrooms and public baths. Their public baths had four stages. The first is the room where they get undressed, the second is where they stretched and put on oil ( they didn’t use soap), the third where they got in a super hot bath, and the last where they got in a super cold bath to cool down from the super hot one. Religion has existed since the dawn of civilization and over time has evolved into the religions we have today. Today the most prominent religions are monotheistic, having one omnipotent god, and despite having many differences they share basic tenets of respect and kindness. Religions, such as Judaism, give explanations for the unknown, provide hope, and bring about a sense of community.
city is like a cycle everyone has a part and does something that helps the city function. However
Over the history of the world, amazing societies have developed around the globe. However, in order for these societies to prosper an order of hierarchy has to be established. These hierarchies often have a government of some sort that rule under the laws of either order or liberty. Extensively, order has been a better choice than liberty. Firstly, One of the greatest societies which lasted for over 3000 years, known as Ancient Egypt, ruled under the laws of order. This society made advances in multiple areas such as agriculture, army, math, science, and literature. Ancient Egypt used religion as a form of order to ensure that the people were all doing what they were supposed to do and that they were listening to their pharaoh (who was chosen
...n extremely important role in holding up the moral and law structure of the nation. In nations where the government holds less control religions can still play a very important role and a stabilizing influence. Religions tend to promote a sense of strong moral superiority and a very conservative attitude. Religions also help promote a sense of community and unity between people that may otherwise be lacking without it. This can be considered in many ways the glue that holds a specific society together.
Each city has its own culture and their society where people live differently based on environment they are in. Some cities do not consider themselves as global superpower while others do. Also, people are the primary function of society to cities.
A government was required to lead the people and aid in organizing a city. City governments were far more powerful than the council of elders and local chiefs of farming villages. At first, Priest probably had the greatest. In time, warrior kings came to power as chief political leaders. They soon set themselves up as the chief hereditary ruler and passed their power from father to son. Governments soon became more complex as rulers issued laws, collected taxes, and organizes systems of defense. To enforce order, rulers relied on royal officials. Over time, government bureaucracies evolved. Almost always rulers claimed their power came from god or divine right. These rulers then gained religious power as well.
The design and structure of a city is as important as the people who dwell within her walls. The placement of streets and the structures built there are carefully plotted for optimal use. Foot and cart traffic, fire hazard, and access to water were all key factors in city planning. Eventually the Romans had fine tuned their design principals in such an advantageous way that they molded all of their city states similarly.
Over time the development of towns and cities has drastically increased since the old cities back in biblical times. The first city known to history was the city of Byblos, which had the reputation for oldest city in the world and dates back to the third millennium. In ancient Greece the term for the city of all cities was called Megapolis, examples of one now would be New York City or Chicago. Cities back in the past were clearly different and constructed compared to modern cities now. A city is defined as permanent settlement, but it doesn’t just start out as a city it has to build it up. Chapter 19 talks about living in cities, urbanization and globalization.
Ancient civilizations had to have very important elements to be able to thrive and be successful. Some of the world’s greatest civilizations had things that in common that helped them become what they have become and what they are known for to this day. Some of the greatest civilizations were ancient Egypt, China, India and others. Three of the main key points that I considered important to help these civilizations grow were agriculture geography and leadership most of these ancient civilizations had this in common. The differences were the location and their beliefs.

Religion helps establish mankind’s place in the order of the universe. As civilization began to be established through the domestication of animals, the irrigation and cultivation of agricultural crops, and life became more complex (moving from mainly a hunter/gather existence to one that could settle down and have more time to consider advanced ideas) people began to consider questions such as, where life comes from, is there a creator or creators who helped make the world, and what happens after we die. Religion helped answer some of these questions. It gave people purpose, meaning, and perspective. Religion helped establish nations in the case of religious theocratic governments. In many of the ancient civilizations, such as the Egyptians, the Mayans, and even Mesopotamia, the priests and other religious leaders played prominent roles in help shaping the laws and government of these civilizations. As his...
Religion is the one element of life that has connected the races and societies of the world for hundreds of years. It has given meaning to lives that may seem otherwise hopeless. Religion has provided for a universal language and culture among those who believe in a higher power. The spirit or being receiving the worship and praise may not be the same, but the practices are usually similar and serve the same purpose--to give direction, insight, courage, and a divine connection.
