United States' Withdrawal From Vietnam America went to war in Vietnam with an aim of destroying the Vietcong to protect South Vietnam from Communism. America was against communism and they wanted to stop the spread of it. They did not achieve what they set out to do as they had many boundaries in their way. Events both inside and outside of Vietnam led to the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam. I am going to be looking at the reasons as to why American troops were pulled out of Vietnam in 1973. There were a number of problems facing the US Forces when fighting the war in Vietnam. The Vietcong were fighting using guerrilla tactics: fighting on a small scale, taking independent, irregular actions. The Vietcong depended on craftiness, concealment and surprise attacks. Guerrilla warfare spread as Vietminh soldiers who were trained and armed in the north - the Vietcong, returned to their homes in the South to assassinate, ambush and sabotage. Unlike Usual wars in which the Americans may have fought, the war in Vietnam had no defined front lines. Much of the fighting consisted of hit and run attacks, with the guerrillas striking at government outposts and then retreating into the jungles. This left the entire American troops on the edge of their nerves; they were getting frustrated with fear and were left feeling guiltier when striking the innocent. The Morale of US Soldiers also was getting lower and lower. One of the reasons I am going to start with is the Tet Offensive. This was a festival celebrating the lunar New Year and turned out to be a huge turning point of the war. The Vietnamese were celebrating the Tet festi... ... middle of paper ... ...from Vietnam. Johnson decided not to stand for re-elections and therefore, he left the door open for Richard Nixon. This was the new president who had his own agenda and decided to withdraw troops from Vietnam. He also started peace talks between leading nations. The second main reason as to why American troops were pulled out of Vietnam would be the Media. The media played such an important role in the war. If it wasn't for the media, public opinion would not have changed and Riots and demonstrations would not have taken place. The media also helped pressurize President Johnson into not standing for re-elections. Which meant Nixon became the new president, who then removed all troops from Vietnam. So therefore I believe that the Media and the Tet offensive were two big factors which had a huge impact on the war.
