What I found to be the most beneficial in understanding Red Sorghum is seeing how difficult it truly is to translate a text from one language to another, Chinese to English in this case. This due to the fact that Chinese is a very complex language with many differences from English, such as implying the tone by adding new words to a sentence and that the same Chinese character can have multiple definitions depending on the surrounding characters. Due to the linguistic differences between the two languages, it is inevitable that the translated and original novel will differ.
