The world is universally filled with injustice, therefore, humanity has dealt with the topic of discrimination. Injustice in our society occurs when it showcases several individuals disrespecting one another about their natural identity. In today’s world, discrimination can be categorized into many different groups, such as ageism, racism, and sexism. In our society every individual has been a victim or an oppressor at some point. Therefore, we should be prepared to face the challenges of injustice by standing up for individuals who are victims of discrimination. The novel Of Mice and Men deals with the types of discrimination that involve individuals like Candy who face injustice in different ways. Personally, I have also experienced discrimination. Additionally, a historical Canadian named Viola Desmond had faced discrimination and was determined to confront the issue of discrimination against her race. Therefore, we should be …show more content…
determined to confront discrimination, in order to display the change universally. The novel Of Mice and Men portrays the different types of discrimination. Particularly, all characters in the story participate in discrimination, either as victims or oppressors. A character that caught my attention was Candy. He is an old man with one hand, that is labeled as the “Old Swamper”, and is one of the workers in the ranch. Discrimination is shown in the novel when Candy declared, “Stuck out his right arm, out of his sleeve came out around stick-like wrist but no hand”, it states that Candy is missing a right hand, and is discriminated against it. This quote proves that Candy’s in order for Candy to confront discrimination, he must face himself in his disability. In the novel Candy stated, "I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn't ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog.” This quote serves as an allegory. Through this, Candy has found the courage to own up to his decision towards injustice. Altogether Candy’s character symbolizes hope which causes Candy to stand up against discrimination. Also, his dog was a symbolic representation of the bigotry against himself. Overall Candy’s Character symbolizes that although you are old and disabled, you are capable of achieving anything in life. Humanity has faced with the tragic topic of discrimination. Our society today is the change that can impact our universe for fighting against the inequity between individuals. There came a time in my life where I had dealt with discrimination. The type of discrimination that I had personally experienced was a stereotype. It was the beginning of my seventh grade in Junior High, where I came across meeting a great amount of people. The people that I became great friends with were individuals who were labeled as F.O.B. The term “F.O.B’s” is defined as fresh off the boat. People are labeled as F.O.Bs because of the language they spoke, and their accent when they pronounced words. The time I spent with the that particular group of friends, people discriminated me by labeling me as “F.O.B”; I felt discriminated when they assumed that I was a “F.O.B”. Just because I chose to hang out with a group that has the same race as myself does not determine that I was immediately like them. Although I was not “F.O.B” about how I acted, people made a prejudgment about me because they assumed that I was a F.O.B. In this situation, I was discriminated because of my race and it has challenged me to fulfill change in society towards discrimination. Therefore, in order to cope with it, I believe that it is important for humanity to be determined to address the situation against discrimination, in order to create change against discrimination universally. Historically, our society had been affected with discrimination. However, various of people have confronted discrimination. Viola Desmond is a victim in Canadian history against racism. She was discriminated because of the color of her skin. Although she was a victim she was willing to confront the issue. She experienced discrimination when she wanted to be seated in the lower section of the theater, but was not able to because of the color of her skin. After this, she decided to file a lawsuit towards the theater, sadly she was deemed guilty. Viola was accused guilty because they stated that she had not paid the right amount, although she did, but the teller gave her the ticket made for African-Americans, and that she had disobeyed the seating. In the end Viola managed to strongly overthrow discrimination, but only in Nova Scotia. Sadly at this time Viola was too focused on confronting this issue that her life began to fall apart, because she was busy with the discrimination issue that she forgot her other responsibilities as an individual. Overall Viola Desmond had set a great example of confronting discrimination and her story had made an impact on creating change universally towards the topic of discrimination. In conclusion, our world is filled with discrimination.
The idea of injustice in our society is judged upon our physical appearance, race, age, and gender. In the novel Of Mice and Men, discrimination is one of the ideal topics it covers. All the characters from the novel have faced discrimination at some point in the story. This behavior is seen through the character of Candy, since he had been discriminated through his physical appearance of old age and being disabled. When dealing with discrimination, we should be determined to state and create change. This is seen through the Historical Canadian figure of Viola Desmond. Therefore, in order to restrain discrimination from becoming worse, society should unite as one to work together to prevent further challenges in the future. Abolishing discrimination should involve an action of change that starts within the humanity of our society and spreads out into the universe. Therefore, we should value the importance of preparing an action of change towards ending
discrimination.
John Steinbeck, an American novelist, is well-known for his familiar themes of depression and loneliness. He uses these themes throughout a majority of his novels. These themes come from his childhood and growing up during the stock market crash. A reader can see his depiction of his childhood era. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck shows the prominent themes of loneliness, the need for relationships, and the loss of dreams in the 1930s through the novels’ character.
Most if not all the characters in Of Mice and Men can be seen as
Several characters in the novel Of Mice and Men are presented with additional obstacles throughout the book. Whether because of color, sex, or disabilities, John Steinbeck purposefully did this to illustrate oppression. Of Mice and Men explores the

Powerlessness creeps up, striking at the back of the neck with a blow, due to the consequence death of a dream, pity of others, and the weak ones’ desperate reliance. In relation to, the English nationalist, Charles Darwin, describes powerlessness as someone who is weaker than others in his famous quote, “survival of the fittest”. This idea is also portrayed in Of Mice and Men, in which John Steinbeck defines fear as the food for the powerless and those who are sympathetic are also powerless, and the more fear one devours, the more powerless one becomes.
When you’re in a position of high authority, it comes with a great sum of power. Having a great deal of control can corrupt and can lead to the abuse of it. Abuse of power is using their power for their own benefit even if it may harm others. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the effects of the abuse shown by Curley and Curley’s wife to the other characters will ultimately lead to a tragic end.
Vivienne Ming once said, “Discrimination is not done by villains. It’s done by us.” Many do not recognize or acknowledge discrimination. Most of the time, individuals allow discrimination to be classified as bullying. However, true discrimination is real. It comes in various forms and it is the population’s job to be familiar with it and use that knowledge to destroy it. Racial, appearance-based, sexual, and religious discrimination all hugely affect friendships/relationships, the workplace, and society as a whole.
Discrimination was one of the issues that caused conflict in the novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. One example of discrimination in the novel comes in the form of racial discrimination against Crooks, as he is an African American. Another example of discrimination is gender discrimination against Curley’s wife. Finally, there is discrimination against mentally disabled people, which is evident in Lennie’s character. The ranch hands' actions and conversations demonstrated the racial discrimination against Crooks for his skin colour, gender discrimination against Curley’s wife for her gender, and prejudice against Lennie, who was mentally disabled individual. This prevented the characters from reaching their full potential and causes tragedy.
Is There Mercy in Murder? Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is about two men who care for each other very deeply. They have financial struggles and one partner with mental disabilities. They battle their hardships together, but when Lennie, the mentally disabled, makes a mistake and kills someone, it forces George to have to take away Lennie’s life. Critics believe George Milton committed cold-blooded murder when he killed his close companion, Lennie Small.
Of Mice and Men, by Steinbeck, shows many different views on society. This book has a lot different messages you can take and apply to real life. All the people in the story can relate to someone today and also to some stuff that still happens all around the world. When reading this book you can really start to understand and connect with the characters and identify their weaknesses and their strengths. Some things you really start to notice is how powerful some people are and how they use that power in everyday living. Many characters had power, because of that it helped some get by, helped some take advantage and boss people around, but power also hurt them.
Discrimination is a problem that plagues those whose qualities are vulnerable. There are many examples of discrimination in the novel, Of Mice and Men. The characters face discrimination in many different ways including racial, age, gender, and disability. Crooks, the black stable buck, is the victim of racial discrimination. Candy, the old swamper, is a victim of the age discrimination. The victim of gender discrimination is Curley's wife because she is a woman. Life of the victims is hard because of the things they have to go through. Lastly, Lennie is mentally handicap so he discriminated against because of that.
Conflict, by definition, is a back and forth struggle between two opposing forces. In the literary work, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, it is clear, the protagonist, George Milton, undergoes many conflicts that lead to the novel’s overall purpose. Steinbeck weaves together George’s conflicts with others, himself, and with society to illustrate what the true meaning of friendship is.
Oppression has been around as long as anyone can remember. Over the years many authors have written about oppression in one or another. Two examples of this are “The Lottery,” and The Machine Stops. Through the persecution of characters and suppression of emotion in the tone, Shirley Jackson and E.M. Forster both show the theme of oppression in their stories The Machine Stops and “The Lottery.” In these two stories, the characters being persecuted are both main characters.
We live in a world full of many societal issues. The aspects that determine whether one will have a successful or unsuccessful life is due to their characteristics such as race, gender, and social status. In the book Is Everyone Really Equal, Ozlem Sensoy and Robin DiAngelo’s exigence is to express the following issues and to encourage the reader to work upon changing the world through social injustice, oppression, power, and community.
Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. In today’s society, men are being discriminated against through the media, suffering from parental custody discrimination, being discriminated against in the courtroom and even for their choice of career. BBC reporter David Benatar said that, “the second sexism is that across the world men are more likely to be conscripted into the military, be victims of violence, lose custody of their children and take their own lives” (Castella, 2012). Even the way men are being portrayed on television and in film plays a big part in how they are treated in real life situations.
