Fourth of July is a time where family comes together to enjoy great food and see great fireworks. Coming from Puerto Rico I didn’t know the meaning of Fourth of July, my family and I just knew what to plan out. It means so much more when knowing the history on it because this day means a lot to this country. Many Americans forget that we have so much freedom to live our lives they way we choose to, it’s a time where we remind each other that this is the land of the free. The very first Fourth of July experience I had was at my aunt’s house; she was the only one in the family that was living in the United States. On this day she had everything that was needed, from volleyball set ups, to croquet, and even a cotton candy machine. Like the Declaration of Sentiments, all men are created equal. The Declaration of Independence allows the people to have the right to abolish an proposition that they do not agree with. They also have the right to institute a new government if they do not feel it is not ensuring safety and happiness to everyone; they can vote in a government who will ensure this. Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, is a national holiday in Mexico that commemorates the 1862 Mexican victory over the French forces of Napoleon III in Puebla, Mexico. This holiday, celebrated on the fifth of May, has deep roots in Mexican culture, but in American-Mexican culture as well. Cinco de Mayo serves as a proud reminder of an unlikely victory, as well as a day to express and cherish Mexican pride and heritage. After suffering from numerous wars, including the Mexican-American war and the Mexican civil war of 1858, the 19th century country of Mexico was nearly reduced to bankruptcy and impoverishment. July 4th, 1776, the U.S gained independence from Great Britain. This day was a very special day for all of America, but nobody noticed the real issue.America had freedom, but the government needed to figure out how to keep the rights and liberties of all of its citizens. The story “The Fourth of July” by Audre Lorde demonstrates that she comes across a realization that she had to speak up for her rights and independence when she visited the capital city of the United States, Washington, D.C. Lorde explains how she was frustrated with the situation that occurred in Washington, D.C., which shows that she had learned the reality of the society. She writes about many things that she came across during the trip to Washington D.C. in the summer vacation. In the essay, the meanings of independence for Lorde are to fight for it and to speak up for the rights that they deserve. Lorde and her family visit many places in the capital city where they were told to leave the place because black people were not allowed there.
... Holidays come along Deborah never misses the opportunity to celebrate the event and show enthusiasm. When she interacts with the community during this time she invites her friends to cherish the festivities with her. Through that day she will get together with her friends and enjoy the company of one another. When she is not interacting with her friends Deborah shows her gratitude of the United States at home with her family.
Audre Lorde in her essay The “Fourth of July”(1982) asserts that freedom is not necessarily for all in the US. She develops her claim by utilizing situational irony, long flowing sentences, imagery. Lorde’s purpose is to show people the cracks in the ideals that the United States of America were founded on in order to get people to challenge those ideals themselves. She adopts a transforming tone to appeal to citizens who are not aware of racial issues that are relevant to them.
In both “The Fourth of July” and “Black Men and Public Space” the narrators did one very important thing; they expressed how the encounter made the narrator feel. This is crucial because it almost allows the reader to share the feeling of helplessness that was felt. In “The Fourth of July”, Lorde explained how she truly did not understand why the family was treated differently. She tells of her parents’ fruitless effort to shield their children from the harsh realities of Jim Crow by planning out virtually the whole trip. The highlight of the story is when the narrator expresses both anger and confusion at the fact that her family was denied seated service at an ice cream parlor because they were black.
I stepped out of the chilly November air and into the warmth of my home. The first snowfall of the year had hit early in the morning, and the soft, powdery snow provided entertainment for hours. The team was ready, we had been working extremely hard for the past seven months for this. We were all in great shape and very rested. A few of the returning players were meeting me at my house to carpool to the final game of the state championship tournament. Everyone knew that the hard work had paid off when we won the semi-final game the preceding day.
Now we had to make the long trip back to Mrs. Tina’s house. It was such a long day, and we were extremely tired so we decided to skip dinner. We took showers, put on our pajamas, brushed are teeth, and went to bed. Over the next few days we went to the beach, had picnics in the park, went bike riding and skating, and took a trip to the mall. We had such a fun week, but now it was time to go home. So, we thanked Mrs. Tina and her family for being so generous and welcoming to us. We told them that they would have to come visit us so we could return their kindness they showed us. So, we gave them hugs and kisses and we headed back to Las Vegas.
