Set in post apocalyptic Chicago, survivors are divided into five factions based on their dispositions: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Dauntless, for the brave; Candor, for the honest; and Erudite, for the Intelligent. Every year, sixteen year olds take a test, known as an aptitude, that describes the faction for which they are best suited. After receiving their results, they can decide whether to remain with their family's faction or transfer to a new faction. Beatrice Prior, age sixteen, is born Abnegation where she lives with her mother, father, and Caleb her brother. She has never come to accept that she is Abnegation, this is because she does not see herself as naturally selfless. Her aptitude test was inconclusive; indicating her aptitude for three factions: Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless. She must never share this fact, as it makes her a Divergent. Divergence is feared by the government; making her a target to be exterminated. Before Choosing Day, Beatrice becomes torn between whether to stay in Abnegation with her family, or transfer to another faction. Beatrice decides to leave Abnegation and join Dauntless, while her brother Caleb chooses Erudite. Shortly after, Beatrice is sent to her new fraction. The Dauntless instructor, Four, explains that not all initiates make it into Dauntless. Only the top ten will stay; the rest will be banished and become fractionless. Fractionless is equivalent to the unwanted and homeless. Fighting through Dauntless headquarters, Tris's father also sacrifices himself, to help Tris reach the control room. When she confronts Tobias, he attacks her. Mid fight, Tris realizes she cannot kill him because she is in love: surrendering. This causes Tobias to break through the special sight and sound simulation. Tobias, being a newly free man, helps Tris shut down the Erudite simulation and free the remaining Dauntless from their mind control. Rejoining Caleb and Marcus, as well as Peter, who had helped Tris find the control room in exchange for his life. Tris changes from being unsure and weak to a strong, brave, and determined in the book, Divergent. In the beginning of the story, Tris thinks she is not selfless enough to be in Abnegation. She is even more confused as her aptitude test determines she is divergent, a person who has more than one personality type who is suited for more than one faction. As she transfers to Dauntless, Tris realizes that she is at a disadvantage in Stage One, which involved physical activity. She is short and scrawny, and she doesn’t excel in an of the exercises alongside losing the fights. This threatens her chance of passing initiation. In Chapters six and seven of Shared Beginnings, Divergent Lives by John Laub and Robert Sampson, the lives of numerous men are shared and analyzed. The authors use life history interviews as well as crime history to help explain their theory. They interviewed these men various times throughout their lives, from a very young age up until age seventy. In Chapter six, Laub and Sampson mention the lives of a few men who have turned to desistance, or stopping, in committing crime. There were two subgroups, “nonviolent desisters” and “violent desisters”. These men had tough upbringings, living in deteriorated homes in Boston. Their parents were not supportive and showed little interest in parenting. Throughout the chapter, the men mentioned various turning points that occurred in their lives in which turned them to becoming desistant to crime. The Glueck’s analyzed and interviewed three men. Leon, Henry, and Bruno were the men. Leon’s turning point for his desistance was his marriage. Henry’s turning point stemmed from his decision to enlist in the Marine Corps when he was eighteen. And for Bruno, he said that his turning point was attending The Lyman School for Boys. Eventually, David and Carolyn are able to relinquish the triadic relationship with their daughter, Claudia. This restructuring in the family essentially alleviates many of the problems that were the cause for the family to seek therapy in the first place. Claudia is able to break free from the well worn routines of arguing with her mother and her unwanted behaviors diminish. I predict that Tris will discover that Four is also a Divergent, and they will start a rebellion together at the end of this book and beginning of the next one. I think that Four is a Divergent because of how he knew quite quickly that Tris was a Divergent. He didn’t have to scrutinize her he discovered it with ease. The most remarkable thing about literature is its effect on society and the individual. Every once in a while a book is published that truly relates to those who read it. Divergent just so happens to be one of those books. Divergent is an extreme take on the differences of what virtues humans value to form the perfect society. The book’s contents are almost philosophical, acting as sustenance for the heart and soul, meanwhile highlighting the many problems we face in modern society through quotes in a subliminal fashion that coincide wonderfully with the story. One such quote can be found on pg.441 and it reads ‘’ Human beings as a whole cannot be good for long before the bad creeps back in and poisons us again.’’ It almost breaks the 3rd wall. Human beings were born with both flaws and goodness. We are a double edged sword with extreme potential on both points. Deep down there is something dark in everybody. There are those who can control it and those who are weak and succumb to it.
If I were to be born into a specific faction, I believe I would most likely relate with the Dauntless group. This faction believes in its members being brave and showing random acts of bravery with everything they do. This includes standing up for other people and also standing up for what you believe in and what you know is right. The Dauntless manifesto states, “We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another… We believe in shouting for those who can only whisper, in defending those who cannot defend themselves.” My parents’ leadership roles throughout their lives would wear off on me and I believe this is the faction that I most likely would be born into.
The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.
First, Identity had a lot to do with the movie. Tris and Four both had trouble finding out their identities and who they were. Both of them were trying to figure out where they fit in and where they belong, which is hard to do. It took her a long time to figure out where she fit in. She was in between divergent and dauntless, but in the end she was found as divergent when she was dauntless most of the movie. Four is basically trying to figure out the same thing she is. And by the end of the movie, she doesn't know who she is. But four said he knows who she is.
Set in a futuristic dystopia Chicago there is a society that is divided into five factions: Abnegation; selflessness, Amity; peaceful, Candor; honest, Dauntless; brave, and Erudite; knowledgeable. Each represents a different virtue of living one’s life. The children of this society have to decide whether they want to stay in their faction or switch to another, the choice is theirs. The young Beatrice “Tris” Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone including herself. After what seems to be the wrong choice, Tris and her fellow faction members have to go through a very competitive training in order to live with their new faction. They must go through intense psychological tests and extreme physical training that can either transform them or destroy them. If they fail to complete their training successfully they will be left frictionless and an outcast to society. While the Dauntless train, the Erudite devolve a life threatening plan that is carried out that night. They developed a serum that stops the brain’s thought process and all of the Dauntless become sleeper soldiers for they were injected with it. The serum does not work on Tris or Tobias “Four” Eaton because they are both Divergent. When they try to escape they are both caught and brought to Jeanine, the Erudite leader. She then sentences Tris to death and Tobias is sent to the control room to view the attack. Tris is locked inside a glass tank that fills with water, but moments later her mother saves her life. ...

Irie ends up with a white man and a child from another man. Millat and Magid end up on opposite sides of the argument on animal experiments and they both end up doing community service after Millat shoots Archie in the leg accidentally. Irie is following in the footstep of her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, going to another land and dating a white man. Millat is following the lead of his ancestor Pande by protesting. Magid is following Samad’s example in fighting for a country that is not his own. As much as each wants to think they are escaping their pasts, they only are following in the footsteps of those who went before them. You cannot escape your past any more than you can have teeth without roots.
In every culture, women are treated differently, sometimes it could be in a good way or bad way. The book The Chronicles of a Death Foretold by, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, takes place in Sucre, Colombia, in Latin America where women are treated differently from men and children. They have to do tasks that are unexplainable. Here in this society women are expected to know how to cook, clean, and do chores. They must uphold traditions to attract their husbands. Their sole responsibility is to the house and their marriage eligibility depends on these abilities. Also women are expected to suffer in marriage and have kids.. “Any man will be happy with them because they have been raised to suffer” (Marquez 31). Santiago Nasar is introduced to the reader in chapter 1 of the novel and Bayardo San Roman is introduced to the reader in chapter 2. Santiago Nasar is described as being handsome and rich, and also displays a love of firearms and falconry. Bayardo San Roman is a mysterious man who enters into town looking for a bride, and is described as having the waist of a bullfighter. When scrutinized, the reader can ascertain the true importance of these characters and their impact on the story.
