Birds are creatures that can fly, yet they do not intrigue that many people, but the beautiful hue of scarlet from the Scarlet Ibis caught the eyes of Doodle's family. It was one in a million to see a bird as angelic as the Scarlet Ibis in their own front yard. Brother's pride would have never allowed himself to help the fallen bird, or in this case, Doodle. When pride, a gained sense of importance, within a person reaches a point where one deludes oneself with a sense of infallibility, then any sense of consideration for others will be scorned. Similarly, in the book, The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, the narrator drags Doodle into the depths of his pride, ignoring any pleas for help, and left him to drown. Though the narrator showed some forms of love, he is undoubtedly and ultimately responsible for Doodle’s death because of the unrealistic expectations he sets upon his little brother.
The tile of the poem “Bird” is simple and leads the reader smoothly into the body of the poem, which is contained in a single stanza of twenty lines. Laux immediately begins to describe a red-breasted bird trying to break into her home. She writes, “She tests a low branch, violet blossoms/swaying beside her” and it is interesting to note that Laux refers to the bird as being female (Laux 212). This is the first clue that the bird is a symbol for someone, or a group of people (women). The use of a bird in poetry often signifies freedom, and Laux’s use of the female bird implies female freedom and independence. She follows with an interesting image of the bird’s “beak and breast/held back, claws raking at the pan” and this conjures a mental picture of a bird who is flying not head first into a window, but almost holding herself back even as she flies forward (Laux 212). This makes the bird seem stubborn, and follows with the theme of the independent female.

In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” the narrator, Brother, had a seed of pride. It all started when his brother was born premature. It says, “ He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man's.”(345) The family was completely heartbroken because they thought that he wasn’t going to be “all there”. Soon the narrator’s baby brother, Doodle, shown he was “all there” in the head anyways. Because of that seed of destruction, the narrator is responsible for Doodle’s death.

Doodle is the main character of Scarlet Ibis and was born with a disability and was predicted to live for a short amount of time. Doodle overcame his weakness with perseverance and with the help of his big brother. James Hurst did very well creating an entertaining story with indirect characterization and with an amusing theme.

In the beginning of the story, there was a boy that was just born and was probably going to die because of his defects until his brother found out that was fine, after 3 months they decided to give him a name, Doodle. the character doodle can be known for being kind and thoughtful.
I think the canary symbolized Mrs. Wright. Mrs. Hale describes her; "She -- come to think of it, she was kind of like a bird herself - real sweet and pretty, but kind of timid and - fluttery. How - she - did - change"; and like a bird, Mrs. Wright even sang in a choir. But after she got married, every thing stopped. She didn't sing anymore or attend social functions. Like a bird, her house became her cage. The only happiness that she appears to have is with this bird. The bird probably sang when she could not. He was probably a companion to her, she had no children. And like her, he was also caged. Because we do not know, we can only guess that her husband killed her bird. If he killed the bird then he would have killed the only thing that was important to her. He killed her once when he married her and caged her in that house, and he killed her again when he destroyed her bird. "No,. Wright wouldn't like the bird - a thing that sang. She used to sing. He killed that, too." When Mrs. Wright was used to its singing and her world became quiet again, it was too much for her take.
Doodle has an older brother who feels shame towards Doodle. People believe that he would not live long since his heart is weak. Doodle, the little brother, could not do much due to his weak heart. The theme is about pride since the brother did many things for Doodle because of his pride. The pride of the brother had been very strong. In the short story, The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, the theme of pride revealed when the brother decided to teach Doodle how to walk and he does not give up on teaching Doodle how to walk.

Also, when they both died they looked similar to each other with the blood and broken neck. James Hurst wrote, "It's a scarlet ibis," he said, pointing to the picture. "It lives in the tropics-South America to Florida. A storm must have brought it here." Sadly, we all looked back at the bird. A scarlet ibis! How many miles it had traveled to die like this, in our yard, beneath the bleeding tree.” (5) Out of all the possibilities, the bird that was originally from a place far away ended up in their yard under the bleeding tree. At the end of the story Doodle dies under the bleeding tree. The bird did not fit in with the area it was in and it was special. Doodle was different than everyone else because he was different but he was also one of a kind. The scarlet ibis was a major turning point in the story because after they discovered the bird the author began to foreshadow future

The Scarlet Ibis bird symbolizes Doodle; this symbolism can be seen by the authors description of both Doodle’s and the Scarlet Ibis’s appearance after death. After the Scarlet Ibis fell from the bleeding tree his “long, graceful neck jerked twice into an S, then straightened out,” (Hurst 4) and he died. After Doodle’s death his brother finds “him huddled beneath a nightshade bush beside the road,” (Hurst 4) where he lay dead. The way Doodle fell made “his vermilion neck appear unusually long and slim,” (Hurst 4). Much like the long legs of the Scarlet Ibis, “his little legs bent sharply at the knees,” making them seem “so fragile, so thin,” (Hurst 4). This description of Doodle allows the reader to imagine him like the Scarlet Ibis, with his seemingly long neck and thin, fragile legs. Both Doodle and the Scarlet Ibis have this appearance after they fall to their death. Hurst utilizes very similar descriptive words when describing both the Scarlet Ibis and Doodle’s appearance after death, so that readers can better see the symbolism of the two.

“A Bird came down the Walk,” was written in c. 1862 by Emily Dickinson, who was born in 1830 and died in 1886. This easy to understand and timeless poem provides readers with an understanding of the author’s appreciation for nature. Although the poem continues to be read over one hundred years after it was written, there is little sense of the time period within which it was composed. The title and first line, “A Bird came down the Walk,” describes a common familiar observation, but even more so, it demonstrates how its author’s creative ability and artistic use of words are able to transform this everyday event into a picture that results in an awareness of how the beauty in nature can be found in simple observations. In a step like narrative, the poet illustrates the direct relationship between nature and humans. The verse consists of five stanzas that can be broken up into two sections. In the first section, the bird is eating a worm, takes notice of a human in close proximity and essentially becomes frightened. These three stanzas can easily be swapped around because they, for all intents and purposes, describe three events that are able to occur in any order. Dickinson uses these first three stanzas to establish the tone; the tone is established from the poet’s literal description and her interpretive expression of the bird’s actions. The second section describes the narrator feeding the bird some crumbs, the bird’s response and its departure, which Dickinson uses to elaborately illustrate the bird’s immediate escape. The last two stanzas demonstrate the effect of human interaction on nature and more specifically, this little bird, so these stanzas must remain in the specific order they are presented.
