In “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst pride is shown as a terrible but wonderful thing. Pride can come from selfishness, in Brothers case or it can come from wonderous actions. Also, pride may lead to joy for a short period of time, when Doodle learned to walk. Then, pride inevitably lead to death, guilt, and regret for Brother. Therefore, the use of pride throughout “The Scarlet Ibis” is shown heavily creating and destroying dreams by Doodle achieving athleticism and living the best life he could, but this also causing his premature death.
To begin, pride is first shown in its bittersweet form when Brother and Doodle go to the place they spend a majority of their time, the swamp. This was an exciting fun place for them to play, then Brother
Doodle and Simon have many similarities. They both have heart conditions and have to adjust to their lives but that is really the only similarity. In the movie Simon Birch by Mark Steve Johnson, the character Simon never has a completely normal life because of his disability. In the book “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, Doodle never came close to normal because of his heart condition. Doodle and Simon have similarities but are different in many ways.
in life and earn respect for ourselves. However, pride also has a negative aspect. Pride can cause misunderstandings and conflicts to erupt between two people and can lead to becoming hurt. For example, in "Rules of the Game" by Amy Tan, Waverly and her mother are constantly fighting and disagreeing with each other because her mother always openly exhibits her pride. And in "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst, Brother's pride compels him to constantly push his sick little brother, Doodle, to become a normal child. Waverly and Brother handle their pride differently since Waverly runs away from her problems, whereas Brother faces his problems head-on and tries hard to fix them.
He also exhibits kindness and love toward Doodle during parts of the story. For instance when Doodle’s brother tires of carrying Doodle in a go-cart, he decides to teach Doodle how to walk. Although Doodle fails numerous times, his brother keeps trying and and encourages him after a particularly disheartening fail when he says “Yes you can Doodle. All you gotta do is try. Now come on,” (Hurst 558). In this quote Doodle struggles to walk by himself. However, his determined brother stays with him the entire time and encourages Doodle to make sure he never gives up and can learn how to walk by himself. The evidence shows that Doodle’s brother does care for Doodle and that he is not always mean and cruel. The quote exemplifies Doodle’s brother’s ambivalent attitude toward his brother. The author is trying to show that Doodle’s brother grows fonder of Doodle with each passing day. Doodle’s brother’s growing love for Doodle becomes more evident as the story progresses. After Doodle learns to walk well, he and his brother, “roamed off together, resting often, we never turned back until our destination had been reached” (Hurst 559). This quote shows that Doodle’s brother grows fonder of Doodle and the two become inseparable. They go everywhere together and Doodle’s brother takes care of Doodle when they go on their journey. Hence, Doodle’s brother becomes a kind, loving brother who takes care of Doodle and tries to make Doodle have a happy life.
For instance, Doodle figures out how to walk, run, swim, fight, and climb, before his misfortune. Doodle feels proud that he can start to be a typical kid, and is content that his brother is proud of him. Brother is also upbeat that Doodle can move like an average child and that he finally has a playmate. Furthermore, Doodle and Brother “share” Old Woman Swamp together. Doodle is pleased that he and Brother can spend quality time together and have fun. Brother is enjoying Doodle being somewhat normal, and helping and helping him be even more normal. To conclude, the effects of pride can have pleasant effects.
The narrator reflects,”I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two things life and death,”(Hurst 3).This quote showed that at first the narrator thought pride was good but later he became self centered and ashamed of his disabled brother and pushed him far beyond his limit.The short story called The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst is a drama where the narrator, or older brother, wishes his younger brother wasn’t disabled. Because he is so fueled by pride, the older brother ends up pushing his brother beyond his capabilities to his death. In this story, we will learn how the narrator’s pride led to the tragic death of Doodle.
Pride is a very relevant issue in almost everyone's lives. Only when a person is forced to face his pride can he begin to overcome it. Through the similar themes of her short stories, Flannery O'Connor attempts to make her characters realize their pride and overcome it.
Hurst, the author of The Scarlet Ibis, uses the color red to symbolize a recurring theme throughout the story which is: Pride can aid, but if not controlled will cause harm. The color red is used throughout the story symbolically, to convey the author’s message. The color in itself has two sides to it; one being that it is a royal color, meaning pride, love, and power. The other is that red represents danger, blood, death, and destruction. Just like the color, pride also has two sides to it. Pride encouraged Brother, the narrator and protagonist of the story, to teach Doodle, his younger brother, to walk. However, pride then began to pull Brother into dangerous territory, and caused harm to Doodle. Pride, like the color red is filled with the yearning to see our loved ones do well. Humans are never perfect, and their emotions often conflict with their logic. In “The Scarlet Ibis”, the narrator receives a physically disabled brother, Doodle, thus trains Doodle physically so that he could live a normal life. Throughout the story, the narrator’s actions and thoughts reveals his true personalities to the audience as he slowly narrates the story of himself and his scarlet ibis, Doodle, whose existence he dreaded. In the story written by James Hurst, pride, love, and cruelty, these conflicting character traits all exists in Doodle’s brother. And the most severe of all, pride.
“...a knot of cruelty borne by the stream of love, much as our blood sometimes bears the seed of our destruction.”(346) Some people would say pride is a seed of destruction or at least a destructive force. In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” the narrator, Brother, had a seed of pride. It all started when his brother was born premature. It says, “ He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man's.”(345) The family was completely heartbroken because they thought that he wasn’t going to be “all there”. Soon the narrator’s baby brother, Doodle, shown he was “all there” in the head anyways. Because of that seed of destruction, the narrator is responsible for Doodle’s death.
Blood is thicker than water, but sometimes pride is thicker than both. Such is the case with James Hurst's "The Scarlet Ibis." This is a dramatic short story about two brothers, in which the older brother manipulates and is later responsible for the death of his younger brother, Doodle. These actions proved that he did not love Doodle.
In August Wilson’s drama, “Fences,” a man named Troy struggles with feelings of unfulfilled dreams and extreme pride. Troy is unable to come to terms with his own fallacies throughout the play, and he fails to see the world through other points of view. He becomes prideful and arrogant because he feels he knows exactly how the world works, or should work, and he inadvertently destroys the lives of everyone around him. Troy’s pride causes him to believe dreams and hopes are useless in the real world. This belief causes him to ruin his own son’s dreams and causes his wife to despise him for the rest of his life. Pride is a harmful thing. Being too prideful can ruin one’s own life and the lives of his or her loved ones.
Brother doesn’t realize that his pride has done damage until the damage has been done. Brother looks back years later and he realizes that his pride got the best of him, and he won’t be able to get his brother back. When brother is younger he doesn’t realize how he has impacted Doodle’s life sometimes in a positive way but mostly in a negative way.
Brothers spend more time outside running, wrestling and playing sports. They enjoy doing things that take physical skill. Even if Doodle went outside, she probably wouldn't be interested in running through the forest and climbing trees. Chances are that she would be more into picking wildflowers and feeding the squirrels. There are rare occasions where you will find a real special brother-sister relationship, especially at the age Doodle and his brother were at.
Brother is too engulfed in his selfish desire for a ‘better’ brother that he does not give Doodle a chance to rest. “I made him swim until he turned blue, and row until he couldn’t lift an oar.” This excerpt shows the reader how ruthless Brother is in the training he has set up for Doodle. Brother appears to care more about him being capable of doing these ‘fun’ things than his brother having fun doing them does. “Success lay at the end of the summer like a pot of gold” When Brother says this, he relays how he is greedy for a better brother and will do anything to get what he wants.
