To the average reader, “To a Mouse” by Robert Burns and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck may initially look very similar, but after carefully critiquing and comparing their abundance of differences, their opinion will change. Steinbeck found his inspiration for writing the novel after reading that poem. His novel is set in Salinas, CA during the 1900s and is about migrant farm wrokers while the poem is about the guilt felt by one man after he inadvertently ruins the “home” of a field mouse with his plow. Even though they are two different genres of literature, they share a similar intent. The poem is written in first person, while the novel is written in third person omniscient. The vocabulary used to provide imagery is also another subtle different. Being two different genres of literature, they are destined to have both differences and similarities, but the amount of differences outweighs the aspects that are the same.
In the first story i read the sound of thunder the technology was more advanced than the others i have read. Also in the second one i read the foghorn the location was in the present and on earth not located in the past. Lastly the story all in a summer day was different because the characters were not dealing with a beast they were each just dealing with time. This proves that each of the stories had many differences.
Many stories throughout our culture present many difficulties and challenges where characters are forced to go through many trials to develop their personalities. Writers create extremely intricate lives for the characters in which they have to fight through either their own personal difficulties or problems presented by the world. The readers learn very intimate and secretive details about these characters until they feel as if they know them personally. Readers of the story find very specific details about the story and make many very clever connections between the strangest of things in the story but they make perfect sense. In the story, The Scarlet Ibis, many extremely surprising facts about the story were linked in a very macabre way and they were rather interesting. Many of these connections have been dissected and discussed very thoroughly, but many more challenges and connections can still be found.
Usually, a short story may contain profound thoughts. Writers always convey their ideas or opinions by offering several arguments in their productions. These arguments are essential to advancing the story and defining characters. In "Aunt Mary" written by Joseph Imperiale, we might identify three arguments here.

After a failed story attempt, the bachelor tries his hand at storytelling and gives a wonderfully satisfying, inappropriate story. These stories are laden with humor, but have, like all other stories, an underlying theme. Both themes of these stories are “implied,” and provide an excellent stage to compare and contrast a story on.
In James Hurst's short story “The Scarlet Ibis” the author describes the life of Doodle and the relationship he shares with his brother. During the story he has some happy moments with his brother, but his brother is also very selfish. Doodle pushes himself to his limits to try to please his brother. Doodle’s brother lets his pride get the best of him and forgets about the wellbeing and feelings of Doodle. The protection of pride can lead to dangerous actions. You don’t have t o look further than everyday arguments that hurt friendships. While this is example on the larger scale, there are some examples on a much smaller scale. In “The Scarlet Ibis” James Hurst uses the setting and the conflict to show that protecting pride can influence dangerous actions.
“But she hugged them to her bosom, and at length she was able to look up with dim eyes and a smile” (Henry 206). Tones can make a short story intriguing, emotional, and gripping. In "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry and "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst, the underlying themes of both short stories are about the love the main characters have for certain members of their family, both stories are somber and thoughtful, and the main characters are serious and family-oriented. James Hurst is the author of the heart breaking short story entitled “The Scarlet Ibis”. “The Scarlet Ibis” is a short story about two brothers; one brother is healthy, while the other is physically handicapped. The short story is centered on the idea that the older, healthier brother’s selfishness and pride ultimately led to the death of his younger brother, Doodle. Numerous quotes throughout the story demonstrate Hurst’s use of symbolism and foreshadowing to portray and predict Doodle’s untimely and heartbreaking death.
The common elements in the two stories are the wolf, Little Red (Riding Hood/Cap), her grandmother, and her mother. The beginnings of the stories are also similar: Little Red?s mother sends her to grandmother?s house because the grandmother is ill. Both stories mention that Little Red is personable, cute, and sweet. This is something that, on initial inspection, seems irrelevant but holds a deeper meaning for the symbolism behind the story. In both stories, the wolf, wandering through the woods, comes on Little Red and asks where she is going. When Little Red responds that she is going to visit her sick grandmother, the wolf distracts her with the suggestion that she should pick some flowers so that he can get to her grandmother?s house first. The wolf arrives at Little Red?s grandmother?s house before Little Red and disguises his voice in order to be let in. When he is let into the house, he promptly devours the grandmother and disguises himself in her clothes in order to eat Little Red as well. At this point, the two narratives diverge.
The struggles both characters face demonstrate character development and contribute to the themes of the stories. Both short stories prove to be literally effective in that they disclose the main themes at the outset of each story. Although the themes may alter over the course of the stories, they are clearly defined in their respective introductions.
Eileen Baldeshwiler’s “The Lyric Short Story” discusses the two different branches of short story—the “epical” and the “lyrical” (231). Baldeshwiler highlights the separate functions of the forms by focusing on their stylistic differences. The epical short story, according to Baldeshwiler, relies heavily on “external action” that is “fabricated mainly to forward plot, culminating in a decisive ending that sometimes affords a universal insight” (231). Further, the plot and characters are “expressed in the serviceably inconspicuous language of prose realism” (Baldeshwiler 231).
