Upon reading Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, we discover the many themes and symbols through the transformations of Gregor and his family; which make us question the community and integrity of humanity. The following paper will discuss these topics through evaluating the decisions of the Samsa family during Gregor’s metamorphosis. Before beginning, we need to understand the two core values of integrity and community for the theme of this assignment. When we think of integrity, it is typically in regards to the honesty and truthfulness of one’s decisions. In some cases of this story, we can even view it as a form of hypocrisy between Gregor and his family’s ethical standards. Community gives others a feeling of belonging through mutual trust and respect; creating an accepting environment. A good community helps us to listen to one another, to learn together, and to change for the betterment of ourselves and others. The begging of the story focuses on Gregor waking to his transformation, and gives a deeper insight to how he took on his family’s responsibilities despite his own happiness and his dislike for his job that provides for the family. “If only I didn’t have to such and exhausting profession!” (Kafka 88).
