The Rise of the Empire Did you know that the Roman armies brought great wealth and glory to Rome after Augustus’ came into power over Rome? The Roman Empire stretched all the way from Britain to the Mediterranean, the Romans controlled all the lands around the Mediterranean. The Romans called the Mediterranean mare nostrum, mare nostrum means our sea. The Romans treated conquered people very wisely, although most of the conquered people remained free. Conquered people were allowed to keep their own religions and not forced to follow the Roman religions. The Roman governors did not interfere with their lives if there was peace, they would just keep watch over them instead. Many of there people learned to speak Latin. Romans have always admired

Without the reforms of Gaius Marius, the great Roman Empire that we all know and have studied, never would have existed.
