“Sometimes we don’t get along with friends, but when we need a shoulder to lean on we know they will always be there.” In The Outsiders by S.E Hinton Ponyboy goes through some awful times during his fourteenth year, but he knew he always had his friends by his side. “ I’d never liked Dally, but then for the first time I felt like he was my buddy. And all because he was glad he hadn’t killed me.” Ponyboy was pleased he had Dally as his friend because without Dally saving him from the fire he could’ve died. In this quote Ponyboy and Dally didn’t get along with each other at first, but when Dally helped him he felt like Dally was his buddy. Ponyboy knows that Dally will always be by his side no matter what. At the end, we may not always agree with our friends but we know that they will cheer you up and care for you no matter
what.
How can two people who are very different share similarities? Dally and Johnny, two greasers from S. E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, have distinct differences as well as similarities. They are similar because they both know what it is like to have abusive and neglectful parents. Also, they both care about each other in similar ways. Dally and Johnny are completely different when it comes to the law. Dally is the least law abiding in the gang, where as Johnny is the most. Dally and Johnny are dissimilar when they die. Dally dies a hoodlum, which is vast difference from how Johnny dies a hero. Therefor, Dally and Johnny have a lot in common, but also have great differences.
The book The Outsiders has many dynamic characters. Dynamic Character is a person who changed a lot in a book. Along with the others, Ponyboy was the main one to change. He started off like a rusty metal bar and turned into a shiny gold bar. Gold as in a good child.
For example, Johnny is physically the smallest of the group and Dally is always the one there to look out for him and help him with everything that is going on. Dally never has these parent/guardian like feelings for anyone else in the group, he clearly likes and cares for Johnny the most. Even Ponyboy realizes it when he says, “Dally is tougher than I am. Why can I take it and Dally can’t? And then I knew. Johnny was the only thing Dally loved. And now Johnny was gone”(152). Pony makes it crystal clear that Dallas cares for each other unconditionally. Similarly, Johnny has great affection and care for Dally. He realizes he can always look up to Dallas for anything and Dallas always has his back whenever Johnny is in need of some help or advice. When Ponyboy says, “Johnny worshiped the ground Dallas walked on, and I have never heard Johnny talk back to anyone, much less his hero ”(25). Like Dallas, Johnny looks up to Dally as his hero and care so greatly about him. Very much alike with each other, Dally and Johnny Both care for each other unconditionally. Therefore, Dally and Johnny are genuinely similar in many
By looking at the incidents happened around Ponyboy and the changes of Ponyboy’s attitudes towards reality, we can see that Ponyboy has matured and learned the essence of solving problems, which most readers don’t see; this is important because it reveals the relationship between dreams and reality, that is cocooning from the world is not going to solve any problems, instead, only through facing the reality could we regain lost courage and break the obstacles.
Can some people so different be so a like? Can some people so alike be so different? Dally and Johnny are those two who are so different, but yet they are similar. In the book S.E. Hinton writes The Outsiders, Johnny Cade and Dally Winston come from two completely different backgrounds, and have completely different scruples. Yet, at the same time they are alike. Dally and Johnny’s parents both repudiate them, making Johnny and Dally mentally tough, and the boys do not value their lives. At the same time though they are different, Dally is stronger than Johnny. Though, Johnny has a soft heart and Dally would not even pay any attention if someone is dying right next to him.
When living sometimes we are faced with difficult decisions that affect our friendships. If you knew you were in a jam, what would you do? Who would you run to? Despite the greasers’ reputation as heartless young criminals, they live by a specific code of friendship and honour. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, there are many instances in which the gang members make selfless choices by putting the needs of others ahead of their own. Three examples are, when the gang has each other’s back, Johnny and Ponyboy’s friendship, and Dally risking his life for Johnny.
For example Dally always hands him a cigarette but not the rest of the greasers. Dally would always help Johnny out no matter what. Especially when Johnny shot Bob, Dally helped Ponyboy and him but only because Johnny was there. Also Dally visits Johnny in the hospital.“ Oh dammit Johnny, don’t die please don’t die…” (149) Dally cares too much for Johnny and he does not want him to die. He is the only thing Dally cared about, he is like a brother to him. Johnny went to Dally to confront him when Johnny killed Bob. Johnny trusts Dally. Dally is one of the only people Johnny has left that feels like family. Johnny wrote to Dally, “ Tell Dally it’s worth it” (178) Johnny writes a letter to Ponyboy before he dies, and writes to Ponyboy and tells him to tell Dally. Johnny wants to let Dally know in his letter that it is worth it, he mentions that for Dally because he cares for him. Clearly, Dally cares too much for Johnny as Johnny does for Dally, so it shows that they care deeply for each

In The Outsiders it is given that through faith and devotion to one another Ponyboy and the gang use their close friendship in troublesome situations for instance when Johnny tells Ponyboy “i had to” he does this as an act of loyalty to Ponyboy to show him that he can trust him no matter what situation they are in.Most of the story is told from first person or Ponies perspective which shows us without exception every aspect of the story. When Johnny dies at the end of the book Ponyboy only then realizes the importance of him, and the gangs need for someone like Johnny to give them a sense of purpose after mentioning “we couldn't get along without him . We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang.” Throughout all of Ponyboys hardships Johnny was always there to support him even when Ponyboy wanted to run away after darry slapped him, he never asked any questions. To keep a strong friendship you need to stay loyal to one another just as much as Ponyboy and his brothers stay loyal to each other after stating in chapter twelve “If we don’t have each other, we don’t have anything.” Through passionate tone used by Sodapop throughout this quote we are shown that after everything they have been through that they trust each other and that staying together is all
