I chose an image of a christmas tree from the 1940s as my first Primary source because of how fabricated Christmas has become has turned it into a ridiculed tradition which relates to the idiotic tradition that takes place in “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. The main symbol of Christmas is the christmas tree which is well known by all. Although the holiday of Christmas is not to be ridiculed the fact is this holiday is not about jesus or his birth in the slightest anymore, the majority of people who celebrate christmas are only interested in the gifts, the music, santa clause, etc. Most people do not even celebrate Christmas for its true meaning and for that reasoning I view Christmas as a degraded holiday. While 'The Lottery' is a fictitious story it can be argued that it mirrors the attitude of American culture in how it addresses religious tradition in its major holidays and celebrations.
Religious groups encourage and enforce conformity of their social norms and beliefs upon their members. Religious traditions are usually passed on from parent to child at an early age. In “The Lottery,” Shirley Jackson reveals the tradition of the lottery and how all of the villagers conform to the ritual of a human sacrifice. Growing up with an exceptionally religious father I can relate to way of thinking of the villagers that traditions are accepted without questioning.
When most people play the lottery today, they think about having wealth. Generally, people who win are happy about it whether they win one dollar or a million. The lottery in our society has grown to support education and it is often worth several million dollars. Usually, the winner of the lottery gains a lot of recognition for the money they win. But what would happen if there was a small town where people held a yearly lottery in which the “winner” was the member of the town who was not sacrificed? This question is answered in Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery.” In reading this story, and reading literary criticism about the story, there were many symbols and much symbolism in this story.
Christmas has consumed itself. At its conception, it was a fine idea, and I imagine that at one point its execution worked very much as it was intended to. Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” brings up some interesting situations which reflect certain traditions from USA in the mid-20th century. Some people might say she is out of her mind to speak about these activities in this time period, but I say it was a bold statement and was able to allow her to express her mind.
I have recently read one of the featured fictional stories named “The Lottery” which has left me with mixed emotions. As I read this short story it had dawned on me that the message was about the power of tradition and how people do not like to change it This first hit me when i read that, “Mr. Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box,”. This shows that the villagers are very adamant on how the lottery should be run each and every year.
Tradition; it is the back bone of every culture and civilization. It is what keeps the beliefs, philosophies, and activities of societies alive, to be passed down from generation to generation. However not all traditions are practiced with pure intentions. Some activities become so routine, people don’t know a life outside of them. Societies become so accustomed to “tradition” that they will participate in pastimes without questioning the ethics or morals of the situation. Ultimately when tradition takes the place of a rationalizing mind the outcome can be incredibly dangerous. The role of tradition is an underlying theme in the short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, forcing readers to ask themselves “At what point do people set tradition aside and realize the thoughtlessness of their actions in their practices?”
The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, is a short story about an annual lottery draw in a small town. The story sets place in a small town in New England. Every year a lottery is held, in which one person is to be randomly chosen to be stoned to death by the people in the village. The lottery has been practiced for over seventy years by the townspeople. By using symbolism, Jackson uses names, objects, and the setting to conceal the true meaning and intention of the lottery.
Christmas is a special time of year that deserves to be remembered for its true meaning. Every year, Christmas becomes more and more commercialized and society forgets the origin of Christmas. It was not started with cookies, toys, and a fat man that delivers them, but instead it started with a humble inn where our Savior was born. The definition of Christmas is “a holiday on December 25 celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.” Nowhere in that definition does it say anything about the outrageous pressure society has set on consumers to buy, buy, buy during the Christmas season. Christmas is about presence not presents.

How blind obedience to superiors can cause considerable damage to not only a community, but the entire world. Symbolism plays a large role in "The Lottery" to set the theme of the story and make the reader question traditions.
Today it seems as though Christmas has fallen victim to materialism and commercialization. Rather than it being a time of loving and giving, it has become a stressful season of greed. Amidst all the hustle and bustle, it is important for us to recognize the true reason of the season, and celebrate in a fashion that exemplifies that reason.
The cruelty of belief that leads to the celebration of happiness has shown in the short story called “The Lottery,” by Shirley Jackson. As the villagers, in this story, slay one of their neighbors every year, they believe that this sacrifice is going to bring them abundantly crops. People in this village seem to concede to this tradition without flout. Just as in Christmas, Jesus Christ, who is a scapegoat, volunteer himself to the sacrifice for everyone’s sin. People celebrate this tradition remembering his birth every year and believing that Christ has protected them from any adversary. Therefore, the similarity between “The Lottery” and Christmas is people do not want to stop celebrating the tradition. However, the confliction is one person gets selected unwillingly as a scapegoat every year in “The Lottery,” for this year is Tessie Hutchinson. As for Christmas, Jesus Christ is willing to be the one who atones for everyone’s sin.

Anyone with the slightest knowledge of history, or current events, must be aware of many events, where, in time of turmoil, society has had a tendency to seize upon a scapegoat as means of resolution. Countless politicians, military leaders, corporate executives and school administrators frequently use this proven technique. The people of the small village were very similar to the leaders of our society. The village people believed that someone had to be sacrificed to insure a good crop. "Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon", said Old Man Warner. It is scary to realize the similarities in the reasoning of the villagers and the reasoning employed today. The villagers are aware that the sacrifice is inhumane but none want to stand and voice their opinion, for fear of going against societys standards and being outcast or being stoned. "Its not the way it used to be," Old Man Warner said clearly. "People aint the way they used to be." The population fears that if they go against society they might be chosen as the lottery winner - or they fear that it would disrupt their corn season. "Some places have already quit lotteries," Mrs. Adams said. "Nothing but trouble in that," Old Man Warner said stoutly. "Pack of young fools."
