Sport and exercise psychology is a mandatory aspect of the sport science discipline. This discipline contributes to the various professional practices associated with physical activities such as - teaching of physical education, recreation and health promotion, and kinesiology related professions - because it plays a mental role for the participants. Sport and exercise psychologists view physical activity in several different ways: physical activity as a tool for health, physical activity as a tool for human potential, and physical activity as a tool for social change. This aspect of psychology may be the most important aspect of physical activity, because of the contributions of exercise and sport psychology to health, human potential, and social change.
Psychology is useful within physical activity as it can be used to promote and influence one’s perspective on the benefits of health. This branch of study has become a gateway into many different careers in physical activity such as a fitness consultant, physiotherapist, and education. Psychology is used within the education system to help encourage all students, despite their physical ability, to participate in a healthy and active life style. In a recreation setting, psychology is used in advertisements to persuade people to want to become more physically active. The career of a fitness consultant uses the benefits to psychology to help their clients achieve their intended goals. Some useful strategies to help a client achieve their goals may include, goal setting, an enthusiastic instructor, or a variation in programs. For example, they may participate for recreational purposes or competitive purposes. In youth sports, there is a certain level of competitiveness that can be rather beneficial for the child. This is due to the child being able to get out and meet more people. Even as people get older there are still many opportunities to participate in a sport, but there is commonly more of a social aspect involved. Psychologists can look at how the competitive nature of youth sport affects the lives of those who participate in them, which can then effect how the general population looks at youth sport. Sport psychologists are having an ever increasing role in learning why athletes perform the way they do.

When you view my job as a discipline within the larger field of psychology, is defined as an applied psychology – or as a field of study in which the principles of psychology are applied to sport. Playing competitive sports affect young people in a good way. They are good because you have that commitment and now its hard to back down. In the "no" section of 'Have Youth Sports Become Too Intense?", it states "Intense training promotes self-confidence, self-discipline, and commitment." Student athletes can agree with all of this because it teaches discipline and a lot of other things. Parents can disagree with my reason, because they don't want their child to go through with intense training. They think it's way too much for the child.
Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. Sports specialization for young people is an increasing trend that results in sports having a negative impact on individuals and society.
Research has shown that the level of our physical activity can have a direct and very influential impact on our state of mind and how the body goes through many physical changes. The age of overwhelming strength and stamina governing sports is over, and the age of the mentally tough athlete has arrived. Athletes are no longer the superficial jocks and robots programmed to accomplish one goal, victory. Modern athletes ranging from the high school to professional levels are faced with many pressures and temptations, normally outside the realm of their sport. These pressures can inhibit an athlete’s performance substantially; therefore, the pressures need to be dealt with by psychologists. Our society, in terms of world sports, has grown increasingly impressive. I will be sharing a significant experience that had a major impact on me and changed my life. The event I will be focusing on is the first few months of my fitness journey. I will apply four social psychological concepts and theories to the event. These concepts and theories will be used to interpret, and gain a fuller understanding of the event and how I was influenced by others.
Several researches have revealed that physical exercise has relieved many people from symptoms of anxiety and depression. During physical activity and exercise, the body produces a type of chemical called “serotonin”, a chemical that aids while dealing with anxiety, stress and depression. Studies also have shown that people who participate in sports results in higher self- esteem and a more positive self- image. Many studies made conclusions that adolescents and students who take part in sports and physical activities tend to have positive and higher self esteem than students who do not play sports and often tend to result better in academic performances at school.
A lot of times, sports seem like a contest of physical skill― a test to see who is the fastest or strongest, who has the best eye or the most endurance, who can jump the highest or can handle the ball the best. What a lot of people don’t know is that there is so much more to a sport than just the muscle and coordination. In order to excel in a sport, an athlete requires a lot of self-discipline, concentration, and self-confidence. It’s the mental factor that makes a difference. Former Olympic gold medal-winning decathlon runner Bruce Jenner once said, “You have to train your mind like you train your body” (Gregoire 1). Success or failure depends on the mental factors just as much as the physical ones. The training of the mind of an athlete is called sports psychology. The use of sports psychology has a huge impact upon an athlete’s performance. The mental skills of a sport are just as important as the physical skills. All professional athletes use sports psychology. “If they aren’t currently using it, it’s almost guaranteed they’ve used it in the past, even if they are unaware they have” (Davis, Stephens, The Exploratorium 129). It’s hard to find an experienced athlete who hasn’t used sports psychology, because without it, they probably wouldn’t be where they are. The use of sports psychology is a crucial step to becoming a successful athlete.
Sports psychology continues to evolve in order to ensure that comprehensive and evidence-based psychological services are available for athletes and teams. Giving athletes an understanding of their psychological functioning, and building the ability to implement a range of psychological strategies in competition enables athletes to both execute their skills and thrive under pressure as they strive to reach their performance potential.
