In another attempt to defile the integrity of scripture, critics have found what they believe to be flaws in the Old Testament. One example of this is a theological flaw. They propose that Christians create an entire idea or philosophy based merely on a singular verse or phrase. A great example of this is that the idea of original sin can only be supported by Psalm 91:5. (Suttile, 2008) This notion proposes that the Bible is not supportive of itself and also leads many to jump to conclusions and make uninformed assumptions. The idea marking its consequence by creating the stereotype of bigotry and uninformed decision making which deters credibility for the Christian religious institution as a whole. Another attack, and a very threatening …show more content…
( 1 Corinthians 13:12, New International Version). This shows that humans may not able fully comprehend all of the matters associated with such an emended topic, but they may do their best. The Bible can be very helpful and it is especially helpful in finding truth. The Bible has achieved this through both direct and indications that point strait to one answer. The Bible is from God. The first example of an indirect example is that in writing 2 Timothy, Paul calls the bible sacred writings. (2 Timothy 3:15, New International Version). On the other hand, a direct example of the Bible declaring itself the word of God may be discovered when one reads Hebrews. The author of Hebrews describes the Bible as "the very word of God". ( Hebrews 4:12, New International Version) One of the greatest examples of this is in the very beginning of Hebrews. It starts out by stating, "spoke along time ago to the fathers in the prophets." ( Hebrews 1:1, New International Version) This passages is uniquely profound for not only does it give context of the awareness of the Old Testament, but it also recognizes the ability of God to inspire writing. Another subtle way the Bible declares its inspiration is through the way it quotes God or the Holy Spirit. (2 Corinthians 6:16, Hebrews 3:8, New International Version). One of the clearest ways to know that scripture is inspired is the disciples ability to speak through the a Holy Spirit. Many times throughout the New Testament, the disciples embrace the Holy Spirit whether it is conducting miracles or speaking in tongues. One of the most notable times is found in Mark when Jesus instructs the disciples to go and speak by the Holy Spirit. ( Mark 3:11, New International Version). As one keeps this in mind, it only makes sense that the disciples may also use the Holy Spirit to write books of all their amazing and divine
I have always seen scripture as the Apostle Paul stated in his letter to Timothy, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” (2 Timothy 3:16 ESV). I see this statement of the Apostle Paul’s directed more to the OT, because the OT would have been readily available to most NT churches of that time period. The churches would have still been receiving portions of the NT scripture well after the Apostle Paul 's statement in 2 Timothy 3:16. For a person to truly understand the scripture we must be careful that our presuppositions do not hinder or distort the scripture and its original meaning. When studying scripture I always look to challenge my own personal
The Bible, a foundational collection of Christian texts, holds the fundamental principles and core beliefs of the faith. To say that the Bible has authority is to say that what the Bible says about how one should live their life is true and must be followed. To ultimately understand why the Bible has authority one must look directly to God. H.D. McDonald in his excerpt in the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology, states that “the authority of the Bible is established by its own claims.” This means that the words written in the Bible do not strictly belong to that of whom penned them since the words came from God himself. The writer simply served as a scribe. Numerous times the Bible claims that God is perfect and is without fault, therefore, he being the ultimate power has the authority over his people and models the expectations he has for them. He revels to humans his authority by giving them a revelation, which Elmer Towns in his book Theology for Today defines as “the act whereby God gives us knowledge about Himself which we could not otherwise know.” The entire text of the Bible i...
Scripture is truthful, for God cannot lie or speak falsely. Grudem states, “the essence of the authority of Scripture is its ability to compel us to believe and obey it.” This quote resonated with me as I considered my spiritual journey and Scriptures ability to persuade and convict in my own life. Grudem states that since the writers of the Bible continuously support that the Bible is written by humans, but is actually Gods own words. We must look to Scripture for its truthfulness. Two examples of Gods truthfulness in scripture come from Titus 1:2 which says “God, who never lies” and Hebrews 6:18 which says, “it is impossible for God to lie.” (Grudem
...e to the study of the bible instead of all the doubts that was created by the other criticism. To them all the odd parts and repeated phrases or parts all add to a strikingly beautiful tale. They see the bible as a literary masterpiece in which the authors used gorgeous imagery to strike at the heart of the reader to show them God’s greatness. In essence rhetorical critics want you to see the big picture instead of all the little side pictures. The J story of Genesis as well at times the P story is filled with imagery that is meant to show God’s power.
To put it simply, God wrote the Bible. He controlled every word that was written in it. Paul sums it up to say in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that God inspired the Scripture. Peter also agrees with Paul and adds in 2 Peter 1:20-21 that the Bible is the Word of God by the power of the Holy Spirit and is extremely trustworthy. Yet, because of all this, God is not the only author. He used divine inspiration to get the men to write the text in the Bible. Peter talks about in 2 Peter 1:20-21 that the Holy Spirit inspired the men to write it. This does not mean that God gave the men ideas or overpowered them. God picked these men because of their traits, interests, and skills, and the Holy Spirit motivated them to write the Bible in their unique way. Because
The Bible is read and interpreted by many people all over the world. Regardless, no one knows the absolute truth behind scripture. Walter Brueggemann, professor of Old Testament, wrote “Biblical Authority” to help people understand what he describes as six different parts that make up the foundation to ones understanding of scripture. He defines these six features as being: inherency, interpretation, imagination, ideology, inspiration, and importance. As Brueggemann explains each individual part, it is easy to see that they are all interconnected because no one can practice one facet without involuntarily practicing at least one other part.
In ancient times mankind used the spoken word in order to tell stories to one another. This tradition carried on until the year 3500 -3000 BCE., when the earliest known written language to man appeared in southern Mesopotamia in the city of Sumer(INSERT CITATION). As the written language progressed from symbols and images to words with sounds, people began to switch their method of storytelling to the written language, or literature. Some of the earliest works of literature still studied today comes from the Ancient Mediterranean lands. These stories, written in various formats, tell of the nature of all things involving gods, men, and the world that surrounded the people of the time.

Countless people ask the question, how the Bible came to be? Several may ask is the Lord’s Word truly inspired by God through the prophets, and how do we know what is the original truth. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." (NASB) 2 Peter 1:21 goes on to say, "For no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God." (NASB) Therefore; it is extremely critical for the church fathers to establish what documents would become the fundamental message used to institute Christian doctrine. For this reason, the New Testament canon was incorporated to achieve the Lord‘s promise, but how was these twenty-seven books formed? According to Gundry, author of the Survey of the New Testament the Christians did not have books that contained the New Testament for the traditions of Jesus words, deeds and the message from God through the prophets. (Gundry)
The Bible is the book sacred to Christians and is seen as the indirect word of God. To Christians, the Bible is a guideline on how to live their lives. It also provides information on how the Earth was created, how humans came about, and provides explanation to anything life has to offer. The Bible is split into two segments which include the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is the sacred book of the Jews. It provides information to everything before the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. The New Testament starts with the birth of God’s son whom he sent down to Earth, Jesus Christ. The Bible is a sacred book for the Christians as well as a history book composed of many first and second hand accounts of not only Jesus Christ,

Protestants believe that the scriptures should be held above all else when it comes to Christianity. The “word” that is found in these scriptures is considered to be the rule of faith and practice. Hodge uses the example from the 39 articles in the Church of England that says scriptures contain everything necessary for salvation. This example is used by Hodge to add to his argument the importance of scripture. One of the major themes of Hodge’s work is that the Protestants believe that God is the inspiration for scriptures. The Protestants also believe that scripture tells us exactly what we need to know. The introduction to the text defines us three things that Protestants believes. The first is that they believe that Scriptures are the word of god and were written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, secondly the scriptures contain supernatural revelations about God, and lastly the scriptures can be understood by the people without an interpreter or mediator.
