When thinking of gothic literature, the first thought is a black, gloomy and petrifying story. Gothic literature is just that. Gothic literature is a genre with romance and horror twisted together to bring out the unreal. This type of literature has become very popular here in United States and around the world. With many people enjoying this type of genre, gothic literature has continued to expand and be well liked for over 2 centuries now (Saunders 1). Although one particular author created this literature, many authors began writing gothic literature. While each author uses his or her own style of writing with different character types and settings to create a respected piece of gothic literature, all gothic writers produce a novel with a remote setting and a sense of chilling horror and romance combined.
The word “Gothic” signifies to a variety of historical foundations and meanings different to the groups appreciated in the 18th century. During that time, it indicated the absence of reason, morality and beauty of outdated beliefs, customs and works, being used disapprovingly about art in general that did not conform to the values of the neoclassical taste (Emandi 82). Gothic Literature is a very popular genre that has a mix of death, horror and love in one text. Gothic fiction has many conspicuous features such as mystery, terror (both physical and psychological), ghosts, the supernatural, castles, haunted houses and Gothic architecture, doubles, darkness, decay, death, madness, hereditary curses, and secrets. Some typical characters of Gothic literature include villains, maniacs, bandits, tyrants, zombies, monks, femmes fatales, madwomen, magicians, demons, monsters, vampires dragons, werewolves, nuns, angels, fallen angels...

Bram Stoker incorporates many important Gothic elements into his writing, Dracula, which it what lead it to become such a well-known Gothic novel today.
In conclusion, Gothic literature is a literature that has been around for over two hundred years and still continues to flourish today. Gothic literature consist of many gothic elements to make each novel more superior than other literatures such as romance and horror combined, as well as a dark and gloomy remote setting. Authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Bronte and Bram Stoker have different styles of writing to accomplish each story they compose. Each novel uses similar gothic elements to create a tale that generates a love and horror story combined.
