I. In society, art is very important. It is one of the best ways to express yourself. Art provides enjoyment to the society. Art helps provide a better quality of life for many people by making their lives better.
II. Art says a lot about society. Since art is a way to reflect yourself, it reflects society. The art that is around from this era reflects what is going on during the present time. It also in a way can reflect the views of a society. Art from the past reflects what happened in the past. Art from the past can tell a lot about the society it came from. Many of them found homes in Seneca Village. Both the Europeans and the African Americans faced discrimination in other parts of the city, so they found comfort with each other in Seneca Village. When the Europeans arrived in Seneca Village in the late 17th century, the population of the village grew by thirty percent. By 1855, 264 people were living in Seneca Village.
In the early 19th century, Seneca village attracted many other ethnic groups for different reasons. Seneca Village grew in the 1830s when people from the nearby community of York Hill were forced to move after a government-enforced eviction. The York Hill land was used to build a basin for the Croton Distributing Reservoir. The Croton Distributing Reservoir, also known as the Murray Hill Reservoir, was an above-ground reservoir located near Seneca Village. Soon, city planners wanted to make a park, but they needed land from Seneca Village. The government exercised their 5th amendment right which allowed the government to take your land, for a fair wage, as long as it was for the good of all people. Residents were offered $2,335 for their property. On October 1, 1857, city officials in New York reported that the last holdouts living on land that was to become Central Park had been removed.
