A mentor is a person that you may get at any stage of your life. A mentor is a person you get to guide and advise you in your life in the hope of continuing to develop your professional career. You should get a mentor in your career when you have either reached a plateau or when you want to reach the next level of your career. This paper will focus on what a mentor is, some common qualities a good mentor should possess and the steps to finding a mentor in the business world today. A mentor can help further a person’s business goals and assist with setting those goals that will further guide them along their career path. Once this occurs, Marciano (2014) said, “a person should decide what kind of relationship they want to have with a mentor and what they hope to learn from the mentor” (p. XX). There are a couple of steps a person should take when considering a mentor. Considering the skills that a person already has or what level a person has reached, a mentor can help develop this. No matter what stage a person has reached in their career a mentor can guide you to further development and planning. Taking the time to really figure out what you need improvement with will help you save time. Thus, this first step is crucial in the planning stage. This is the plan for the entire mentor - mentee relationship. By laying out a plan of what your expectations are and what you are wanting help and guidance with, will be efficient for you and your mentor. It will also serve as the basic guide for the entire mentor – mentee relationship. As your relationship grows you can tweak the plan and change it as your needs change to customize your growing
