Present day technology would not exist if it was not for the Industrial Revolution. In the mid eighteenth century James Watt created the steam engine, allowing Britain to produce and distribute energy resources faster than any other country, at the time. This caused other countries to become more dependent on Britain for all energizing products. Britain held all the components that were needed to make energy, such as hydrocarbon fuels, coal, iron, oil and natural resources. As time progressed, so did the demand for the resources. The demand caused many urban living citizens to move from their remote homes to the city, because there was an overwhelming need for factory workers and miners. Finding a home within the city limits became scarce for many families, because the continuous demand for workers caused homes to become occupied quickly. The living conditions in the city were very unsanitary; the houses were built quickly, resulting in a lack of support and unsteadiness. The technological advancements in the mid-1700s, known as the Industrial Revolution, produced substances that continue to effect the environment today.
The machine that began, and continued to cause, air pollution in the mid-1700s was the Steam Engine. The Steam Engine was originally created, by Thomas Savery in 1698, to solve the problem of pumping out the water in the coal mines. Savery’s assistant, Thomas Newcomen worked to make improvements on the Steam Engine, eventually creating a Steam Engine that contained no limits on the amount of steam it could hold at a given time. In relation to society and environment today, the steam engine and coal production has caused large negative effects. The worldwide producer of energy, coal, has caused the air supply to lack the amount of oxygen our bodies need, due to the releasing of carbon into the air. The high amounts of air pollution have resulted in many deaths and contractions of lung diseases. The deadly fog is not seen today, but could easily return if we do not seek better resources for energy. The life expectancy in London in now 78 for a male and 83 for female, which shows the improvement of the environment due to the Clean Air Act. The Steam Engines is still in use today, but has been generally modified to fit society’s needs of clean air.

According to World History From 1500 by J. Michael Allen and James B. Allen, the Industrial Revolution could not have happened without a new, reliable source of power (144). The steam engine became such a source. Before the steam engine all industries used manpower, horsepower, and the power of water and wind to drive the machines. All these means were not efficient and practical enough to satisfy the rising needs for energy – the solution – steam engine.
First, larger cities brought the need for more transportation. In 1760 Manchester City was very small. By 1850 Manchester immensely increased in size. The new size of the city brought a need for transportation. New railroads and canals were built in the city (Doc. 1). Much of the transportation and machines created during this time were powered by a steam engine created by James Watt. James Watt, from Scotland, created the steam engine that used steam to power machinery. With their invention of the steam engine transportation of goods and people boomed, railroad, canals, etc. which resulted in a new class system. Before people lived in small communities and their lives revolved around farming, but with the start of the revolution more people and laborers moved to the city which had become urban and industrialized. New banking techniques such as corporations, partnerships, credit, and stocks were invented. Britain’s wealth, population, technology, education and resources led to it being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. While the Industrial Revolution increased work wages, it also consequently resulted in harsh punishments, poor living conditions, and deadly accidents. The steam engine opened a whole new world for everyone. The steam engine maximizes production, efficiency, reliability, minimizes time, the amount of labor, and the usage of animals.
In conclusion, the industrial revolution brought many changes to Britain. The changes included the textile industry, the steam powered engines, which helped create steam-powered locomotives and steam boats. Because of this major improvement in the industrial revolution railroads began to sprout and was a more efficient way to transport goods and people across Britain. Air pollution is not something new; in fact, air pollution has been even documented as far back as the 16th century. During the industrial revolution the sights of smoke coming out from factory were a sign of prosperity. This might have been prosperity in the economic point of view, but as we can see now, in the environmental point of view it was not prosperous at all.
The new invention of steam power was one of the great motives for the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, steam was used to power many of the machines, thus with the invention of steam power, the Industrial Revolution was powered onwards. The duo of inventors, Thomas Savery and Thomas Newcomen were both based in Britain, thus, this was the place where the inventions were first used giving Britain the time advantage over other countries.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency “a new gas powered lawn mower produces…air pollution in one hour of operation as 11 new cars each being driven for one hour” (Springfels). People needed faster and more reliable means of transporting the large number of products being produced from factories. Wooden sail boats became steam powered boiler ships made out of iron and steel that more effectively and reliably moved goods from one place to another while steam powered trains took the place of horses, carts, and wagons and made land travel swift and safe. Practical steam engines and new ways of travel had abrupt effects on employment, resulting in even more factories and mills, and centering even more on cities (“Industrial Revolution,” History.com). Communication improved as well, not just by people being able to travel from one place to the next more quickly. Telegraphs and eventually the telephone and radio resulted in handwritten letters no longer having to survive week long trips, but instead being relayed halfway around the globe in just minutes (Deane 72-74).
In the late eighteenth century, the Industrial Revolution made its debut in Great Britain and subsequently spread across Europe, North America and the rest of the world. These changes stimulated a major transformation in the way of life, and created a modern society that was no longer rooted in agricultural production but in industrial manufacture. Great Britain was able to emerge as the world’s first industrial nation through a combination of numerous factors such as natural resources, inventions, transport systems, and the population surge. It changed the way people worked and lived, and a revolution was started. As stated by Steven Kreis in Lecture 17, “England proudly proclaimed itself to be the "Workshop of the World," a position that country held until the end of the 19th century when Germany, Japan and United States overtook it.”
