Characterization: are the methods by which a writer creates people in a story so that they seem to actually exist. Some of the details that characterize Yunior from “How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie” is that he had a different kind of stereotype for different kinds of women, that he tried to hide his true self to date different kinds of girls, he lied to get what he wanted, he never respected girls in front of his friends so that he wouldn’t be in trouble, and he looked at girls in a very sexual aspect.
Round Character: are complex characters whose personality, background, motives, and other features are fully described by the author. A character who encounters conflict and is changed by it, they are more fully developed.

Vicki on “My Kid’s Dog” is a flat character because they never mentioned any of his personality traits or qualities, all we know it’s that she was the wife’s friend and that she was worried about the dog having rabies.
Stock Character: is a stereotypical character distinguished by their flatness that are particularly popular in formula fiction, television programs, and action movies. Stock character are quickly recognized and accepted by the reader or viewer and doesn’t require a full development by the writer. Dr. Sean form “Good Will Hunting” is a stock character we don’t know that much about his personal traits, only that he suffered from the death of his wife. We quickly realize from the way that he looked that he was a nice person, who was willing to help Will make a change his life.

It is an intentional product of the speaker and is contradictory to his/her emotions and actions. Verbal irony is often stated in the form of a metaphor or simile. One example of verbal irony is when in” Hey Howya Doin”, the tall husky guy asked the other joggers Hey Howya Doing, you would assume that he was saying it in a nice way because he truly care about their lives, but in reality he said it to make them confused and distracted from what they were thinking.
Situational Irony: an outcome that turns out to be very different from what was expected, the difference between what is expected to happen and what actually does. One example of a situational irony is when on “GWH” Will, the janitor of the school is the one who solves the difficult math problem; everyone was expecting that one of Prof. Lambeau students solve the math problems, not the guy with no college education.
Symbolism: is an object representing another to give it an entirely different meaning that is much deeper and more significant. Ralph was the leader of the survivors on the island; with the help of his friends he was able to create a society with rules. Jack is a reckless boy that only wants the title of chief to order others, being glad there are no adults to order him around. Roger is one of the boys one the island that never truly had a civilized side to him, making it easy to allow the savage to let loss.

Dramatic Irony is when the irony that is in speeches or text is expressed through a workable structure. The audience knows what’s happening, but the character themselves do not know what’s happening or what’s going to happen. The character is unaware that this is happening, but the readers know how this story will lay out. In the story “The Bicycle” by Jillian Horton, Hannah is a young girl who loves to play piano. Hannah’s aunt, Tante Rose knows how to play so she says that she will teach Hannah how to play but she must obey her aunts rules. One of her aunts rules is that Hannah cannot ride a bike. Hannah has never ridden a bike and all of her friends have, and Hannah wants to ride a bike. The author uses dramatic irony because the readers know that Hannah will ride a bike at some point in her life. The author makes the dramatic irony important because if the author didn’t tell us that Hannah has never ridden a bike, we wouldn’t know why she would want to ride one so badly. This is dramatic irony instead or irony because irony is when the readers expect something to happen and it turns out the opposite way. In this story the reader knows that Hannah will ride the bike and Hannah ends up riding the bike at the end of the story. Verbal irony is when a character says one thing but means the opposite. When a reader understands the irony of what a character is saying, then he can truly understand the nature and intentions of the character. An example of verbal irony is when Macbeth says to Banquo, "Tonight we hold a solemn supper, sir,/ And I’ll request your presence" (Macbeth 3.1.13-14). The reader soon discovers that Banquo never makes it to the banquet because he is brutally murdered by order of Macbeth.
