Since the creation of mankind, humans all over the world have fallen in love and believe that they have found “the one.” People get married and realize that it is not always “happily ever after.” A large percentage of couples are unable to maintain their relationship, because of this, they choose divorce. Many spouses, believe that this is the best solution to deal with problems between each other. However, many people think carefully before getting entangled into marriage. Nevertheless, divorce rates still continue to increase to this very day. It certainly looks as if divorces occur more now than they did 20 years ago. There are three causes of divorce: changing of a woman’s household status, financial situations, and lack of communication.
The first cause of increased divorce rates is because of women completely changing their household status. In past generations, men had to earn all the money for the family expenses. Marriage is a commitment that seems to be getting harder to keep. The social standards placed on an individual by society and influenced by the media inevitably lead some to consider divorce as a “quick-fix” option. “Have it your way” has become a motto in the United States. It has become a country without any consideration of the psychological effects of marriage and divorce. The overwhelmingly high divorce rate is caused by a lack of moral beliefs and marital expectations.
First of all, America has the highest divorce rate among western nations. Divorce rate increased after every major war, and decreased during the Post-World War II economic boom. The divorce rate has more than doubled since 1940, when there were two divorces for every 1,000 persons. Now for the same number of people, there are over five divorces. Studies indicate that there is more divorce among persons with low incomes and limited education and those who marry at a very young age. Teenage marriages are much more likely to end in divorce than are all other marriages. And women who marry when they are over age 30 are the least likely to become divorced. There has been a decline in divorce in the number of couples who have children under 18. Almost 45 p...

Academic research has shown that 41% of all marriages end before their 30th year of marriage (Battams, 2013). Many studies dispute the fact that divorces only effects children psychologically, but this paper will focus on other important factors including emotional and behavioural effects along with short and long term effects a parental divorce will have on children. The purpose of this paper is to present the various types of ways that children cope with the stress and depression of a divorce. Couples who do not work on their relationship may find it harder to stay together. Families who are divorced according to Rappaport from the Family Law Quarterly “find it hard to survive on two incomes”, so how are single parents surviving? (Rappaport). A study was conducted, supported and stated by Rappaport that “approximately 55% of separated or divorced women with children under the age of 6 live below the poverty line” (Rappaport). According to Ailee Slater from the Greenhaven Press, “Poverty leads to divorce, not the other way around” (Slater). According to Slater, “Marriage counselors and national states point out that money is the number one reason for arguments within a marriage” (Slater). Parents who get divorced and live on single incomes “cannot survive on their decreased income and have to work more to make ends meet” (Rappaport). Likewise, an American study stated that divorced individuals have “8,652 people that have 20% more chronic health conditions” in fact, heart disease, diabetes, or cancer have a higher percent rate than married people do according to Sherman of the Journal of Chinese Medicine. (Sherman 81). Thus, people who get divorced are more likely to suffer from health problems than married individuals; however, since “marriage has a positive impact on health” spouses should consider seeking help from marriage counseling. Although their has been a slight decline in divorce rates, “half of first marriages still were expected to dissolve before death.” (Stacy, 15, 1991) Whatever happened to that meaningful exchange of words, “until death do us part,” uttered by the bride and groom to each other on their wedding day? What could have been the cause of such inflated divorce rates? Perhaps young married couples are not mature enough to be engaged in such a trremendous responsibility, or, maybe, the couples really do not know each other as well as they thought. Possibly, they have been blinded by infatuation rather than by true love, or, quite simply, the couples mistakenly have different relational expectations.
