Volunteering Helps Everyone Confucius once said, “He who wishes to secure the good of others has already secured his own.” (“Do One Thing - Quotes for a Better World”). This quote states that when people help others, they reap many rewards themselves. While this is true, many people still feel as though they do not have the time to volunteer, and that there will be no rewards for them if they do. This is a misconception that many people have due to a lack of understanding about the benefits of volunteering. The focus of volunteering for many organizations is to help people who cannot help themselves, but there are also many benefits to those who choose to volunteer. Volunteering exemplifies many traits that schools find desirable, such as initiative and a care for others well-being, and many colleges feel that students who do volunteer will be assets to their school. Because of this, many universities donate money every year in community service scholarships. One such scholarship that comes through volunteering is the Abbey Road Green Ticket scholarship, a scholarship that awards high school students who have “demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the environment and their local communities” (“Abbey Road Green Ticket Scholarship”). The Abbey Road scholarship may seem too good to be true, but it is just one of the many scholarships that go to the students who choose to volunteer. Many of the scholarships that come as a result of volunteering go towards furthering teen’s education. Many people view volunteering as something that makes little significance on the community. They feel this way because the differences volunteering makes are often times subtle to everyday people, but volunteering can also make a huge difference all at once. One story of a man making a difference in his community through volunteer work is that of Rajan Taylor. On March20, 2015, Rajan held one of St. Louis’ largest food fundraisers called “Spring into Giving”. He convinced more that seventy companies in St. Louis to donate more that fifty thousand pounds of food for needy families (Reed). Rajan, by “calling a few friends and sending an email” made a huge impact on his community and fed possibly thousands of people. The importance of volunteer work is not limited to huge events that make a difference all at once.
