Taruffe Begin Exposed
Tartuffe, a play beyond its time involves reasoning, scandal, lust, greed, and betrayal. Tartuffe a hypocrite portrays as a religious man who tries to take advantage of Orgon. Orgon a wealthy, loyal, and successful man seen Tartuffe as a brother. Orgon is the one man who admires him the most as he believes that Tartuffe is a holy and religious man. Tartuffe plans are to acquire Orgon’s wife, property, and wealth. As stated by Gifford Orwen “Audience have viewed with apparent equanimity its chief protagonists in a variety of guises ranging from the oleaginous, canting hypocrite of advanced years to a suave and sagacious young literature” (Orwen 611). Throughout the play, Orgon, the protagonists of the play did not accept anyone who dares to question Tartuffe. Orgon’s blindness almost cost him everything. “He’s taught me to love nothing and no one!” (1.5. 25) Orgon admired Tartuffe more than he did his own family. Orgon takes the advice of Tartuffe and believes that he should love no one but himself. Next, Ormen states in his article that “The presence of Tartuffe in the household of Orgon is, in itself, quite unremarkable since affluent bourgeois home frequently boasted of their resident directures de conscience” (611). Orgon was a high class man with stick priorities he lived by. He was a man of honestly and loyalty the characteristics he thought Tartuffe shared. The only way for the family to show that Tartuffe was a hypnotic was to show evidence of him being one. Elmire plan showed Orgon that Tartuffe was not the man he claimed, which was tricking Tartuffe into confessing his feeling for Elmire again while Orgon hide under the table and listen. The play banned from the Catholic Church part comes from lack of religious faith that is not profound. His plan to obtain Orgon wife, property, and wealth was not accomplished. Orgon’s family was growing tired of his blindness toward Tartuffe. Orgon would dishonest his family and opposed anyone that would speak bad of him. As that was shown when put his on son Damis out because he told the truth of what he heard Tartuffe tell Elmire. As stated early of the essay Dorine the lady’s maid and Elmire Orgon wife were two main characters that would convince Orgon that Tartuffe was a hypocrite. Dorine notices who Tartuffe was from the beginnings and she never believe that he was a religious and holy man. As she tries to convince Orgon of Tartuffe ways by telling Orgon “how can a man who looks as wise as you be such a fool.” (2.2. 19-20) Dorine does not believe that Orgon who is a smart man become so stupid of Tartuffe. Orgon has so much trust that he proposed that he spends more time with Elmire. Though the play was banned in by the Catholic Church in the enlightment time period.
