“Antojos” and “The masque of the Red Death” Imagine reading a story but later finding out that it symbolizes something different.For example “Antojos” by Julia Alvarez and “ The masque of The Red Death” by Edgar Allen Poe show how symbolism can change a story. In these two novels you see the use of symbolism but into different ways. The two short stories are very different “The Masque of Red Death”takes place in the 14th century and is about the Bubonic Plague that killed millions. “Antojos” is about a girl who goes back to her home country and experiences a life-changing event.Although these two stories are very different in theme narration and multiple things there are a few things they have in common like external conflict, symbolism, and the sequence. …show more content…
In “Antojos” the symbolism isn't as clear as in the previous story but it is still rather noticeable when it says “Yoyo can eat guavas to her heart's content”.(pg #?)This quote is showing that guavas are symbolic for her childhood.When she moved to America and was craving guavas also her childhood.Also both of these stories create suspense. For example in “The Masque of Red Death” the suspense is built when a masked figure shows up uninvited,and in “Antojos”the suspense is built when two men with machetes walk up to Yolanda in the dark.So even though these stories are some what different they are both excellent short

They also use symbols to give clue/hints for the story in which they also develop their main characters. Suspense is the feeling of uncertainty or excitement, in waiting for an outcome or decision. Edgar Allan Poe uses suspense in his story “Masque of the Red Death” by using objects and great descriptive detail. Poe’s story is about a prince that tries to escape from the inevitable. He tries to lock himself away from the ‘red death’ and has a masquerade ball that doesn’t end happily. Prince and all of his guests die inside or around the seventh apartment room. The seventh room is preceded by six colored rooms which are meant to symbolize either the stages of life, or the seven sins. Inside the last room there are black velvet tapestries that hang all over the ceiling and down the walls. The window panes are a deep blood red color which gives the room an unwelcoming atmosphere. On the western wall, there is a gigantic clock of a deep black wood. Inside it has a pendulum that swings back and forth with a dull monotonous clang. Symbolism such as the colored rooms, the impressive clock, the feeling of celebration being at a party all makes this story feel like a fairytale. Poe used this fairytale style and converts it into a nightmare in disguise.
The most prominent example of this is the imagery of the wallpaper and the way the narrator’s opinion on the wallpaper slowly changes throughout the story; this directly reflects what is happening within the narrator’s mind. Not only is each story’s theme attention grabbing, but so is the common and reoccurring use of symbolism throughout the stories. They did not just use the Element of Fiction symbolism, but even used one common symbol. Death is just one of the many things that are feared; however, it is inevitable. Throughout time there has been many deaths. Some might have lived a care free life, whereas others were constantly worried for their day to come. In “Masque of the Red Death” written by Edgar Allan Poe, the story shows death is a matter of time. Death comes to all those, either noble or poor. Many have come to accept death as a sign a life was well lived. However, there are others that believe their lives were not long enough for them to accept the afterlife. No matter how much a person tries to run or hide from death it cannot be escaped.
