In the article “Counterpoint: Cooling Off” by Dr. Amy Witherbee, a Professor at University of Arkansas, she shares the concerning statistic “Carbon dioxide has increased 30%, methane has increased more than 100%, and nitrous oxide has increased about 15%” (Witherbee). This is concerning because these dangerous gases called greenhouse gases cause many problems and are a hazard to our planet. One of the biggest issues facing the world today is climate change; to address this issue, we must lower greenhouse gas levels and use cleaner energy sources. Climate Change is costing the world millions of dollars and is the biggest issue facing society today. Climate change is causing greenhouse gases to build up, ice caps to melt, etc. Some people believe climate change is not a big issue. For instance in the article “Gospel of The Climate Change Deniers” it is stated, “Barton a guy who called Al Gore ‘totally wrong’ about global warming and advised people to get shade to adapt to rising temperatures” (Kroll). Although, this is an appealing mindset, it is illogical because climate change has many more effects than just warmer temperatures. In addition to lowering greenhouse gas levels and using cleaner energy sources, there are things we can do as people to stop climate change. We could reduce our use of electricity at our homes by turning off the lights when we leave the room, turning down/up the heating/ac when it is unnecessary, and using less water. Also, we could install solar panels in our homes and donate money to environmental protection agencies. One of the most compelling and difficult environmental problems society is facing today is climate change. People do not realize how much the environment has changed for the worse in the last ten years, until they are told that the last two decades of the 20th century have been the hottest in the last 400 years, according to climate studies (Conserve Energy Future). Today the carbon dioxide levels have reached 396.81 parts per million (ppm). “Carbon dioxide (CO2) has also increased over the last 100 years-- from about 300 ppm to 370 ppm. Interestingly, the majority of these additions have occurred in the last 50 years, when temperature increases have been slowest” (geocraft). There are no known solutions yet to reverse these effects in the environment, however there are many things people can do to prevent it from increasing. By implementing a carbon tax the government can tax corporations on how much carbon they emit into the atmosphere. With the extra money from the tax, scientist can invest in alternative ways to reduce how much carbon is emitted. Reducing climate change is going to take years and so nothing is going to get fixed anytime soon, but meanwhile we can use that extra money to begin cleaning up the atmosphere. There are many ways to explain climate change, some say its due to the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, others say it is the burning of the fossils fuels, some even say it’s the greenhouse gases. It is difficult to turn on the news or surf the internet without hearing about global warming. It is currently a very controversial topic in America. Many politicians use the idea of global warming to alarm their target audience and earn their votes. Billions of dollars are spent each year to reduce America’s carbon footprint, whether it be on cleaner technologies or alternative fuel sources. This is all done without concrete evidence that proves global warming is actually taking place. If it is actually taking place, there is no convincing evidence that verifies it is directly being caused by the human population. The topic of global warming has become more than the protection of our planet. It is becoming a game of politics. Our lawmakers are supporting the spending of these large amounts of money towards a cause that hasn’t been verified; when the funds could be used on other problems our country is faced with, such as healthcare or the rapidly-increasing national debt. This is a problem that continues to grow. Our country is becoming more comfortable with the idea of big spending, and the issue is starting to be swept under the rug. This is an important issue. Our taxpayers’ dollars are being wasted and this issue is contributing to the election of officials for a fictitious cause. Global warming is the biggest issue of our time and we are not taking it seriously enough. Global warming is an extremely bad issue that we need to take more seriously, because it depletes our O-zone layer, melt the ice caps and it increases the wildlife extinction rate. It is said that climate control is man made and it is dangerous. On the other side of the argument, many people do not believe that climate change is real. They argue that their has not been a big temperature change in almost two decades. They also bring up the point of there not being enough data in the climate history to draw the conclusion of what is happening in the climate now is abnormal. Scientist started to record climate change around the 1800’s which many people believe is not enough data to do a comparison. Another reason some believe that climate change is not real is because of some instances where a scientist predicts a date of a significant climate change never happens. If the use of fossil fuels does not decrease this planet that we live on is only going to get worse and worse as time goes on. There are so many things that us humans can do to help decrease/stop global warming. One of the things we can do is move our thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer. Another reason to help stop global warming is to start recycling at home. A big one that many people should do is reduce the number of miles people drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possible.
