The American people are easily swayed by the abundance and/or cost of products on the market. As a direct result of this truth, America has fallen into pitfalls in the name of cost effectiveness and consumerism. Pollan gives the examples of the Alcoholic republic and the Republic of fat in which he compares and contrast the causes and results of American lifestyles and the affluence among other changes in our culture and history. Mainly, that Americans will never exhaust their greed and gluttony. Pollan uses ethos, pathos, and logos to successfully persuade his audience to see his point of view. One example of Logos is found in paragraph 9: “Three of every five Americans are overweight. One of every five is obese.” Pollan is using a statistic in order to emphasize to his reader the point he is intending to make. Another excellent example of logos would be, “Since the Nixon administration, farmers in the United States have managed to produce 500 additional calories per person every day (up from 3,000, already substantially more than we need); each of us is, heroically managing to put away 200 of those surplus calories at the end of their trip up the food chain.” Most Americans would find this statistic staggering as well as impactful as considering their options in the republic of fat. Another example is when he stated, “Since 1997, an American’s average daily intake of calories has jumped by more than ten percent.” This statistic is showing how the change in calories is increasing our unhealthy eating

Logos means the persuading by the use of reasoning. For example, “ No one even knows whether salmon can even survive in the lower San Joaquin, which has temperatures more suitable for bass and bluegill, (McEwen 1).” The quote is clearly a display of logos because the author demonstrates to the reader that the government does not even make sure the salmon can survive in the lower San Joaquin, which then convinces the reader the project is not well thought out and cannot be trusted. I agree with the author’s viewpoint because if the government was really interested in the benefits for people, the representatives would have looked into all the details necessary to be able to succeed with the project. Another example of the author stating logos on his article for the reader to get a better understanding of what the government really cares for is, “Besides, scientific evidence suggests that California’s salmon problems have been caused in large part by oceanic conditions and the environmental mess that is the San Joaquin-Sacramento Delta (McEwen 1).” This quote is an alternative representation of logos since it proves a fact. The fact makes the reader extra believable since he uses scientific evidence about California’s salmon problems. “When the Negro Was in Vogue from The Big Sea” by Langston Hughes was mainly about an ironic situation in which white, despite repressing the black community, “set up shop” in the majority black Harlem neighborhood. Also because the wealthy and influential were embracing the black culture, while outside of the Harlem neighborhood they oppressed them. One could conclude that the audience of this would be anyone unaware of the 1920’s and how some of the African Americans were treated. One could also conclude from the passage that the purpose of this was to give Langston’s perspective of how hypocritical America was at the time about racism. Whites felt that blacks were beneath them but wanted to go their clubs.

There are many people who see space as the last and greatest frontier for humankind. There are many groups who are leading the way and NASA is one of them. But should our tax dollars be invested in such an idea? No, according to British history professor Jerry DeGroot. His thesis, in the article “is that United States should, a sensually, defund NASA. Along with a strong appeal to logos, the speaker uses a sentimental tone to support the points that we stopped kids from doing creative things. One of the greatest conflicts in the history of the United State of America, the Revolutionary War, was started when the colonies of North America declared themselves independent from British rule. A group of men known as the Founding Fathers, which included George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John and Samuel Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and others, formed the Continental Congress to rule their new nation. They chose Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence, which they would send to King George III to make their independence official. Jefferson knew that he needed to use strong language to make a solid agrument against British rule in the colonies and to convince the colonists that independence was the only choice to maintain their freedom as human beings. The powerful use of parallelism, ethos, pathos, and logos helpd Thomas Jefferson to convey his idea that all men are created equal with unalienable rights and that it is the duty of the government to protect those rights.
As a former slave, bereft of any free will, written words were all but unavailable to Frederick Douglass. Slaves were unable to tell their stories, to expose the dehumanization that their enslavement caused on both sides of the racial rift; so it was necessary for Douglass to fight tooth and nail to obtain the right to learn, and ultimately to narrate his own life story. Amongst the narration, multiple rhetorical strategies are integrated into the text in order to uncover the dehumanizing effect their mistreatment had on slaves during this time. His primary purpose is to educate those who are ignorant of the horrible conditions that slaves lived in and the cruelty that they suffer. He does this through the use of rhetorical devices such as anecdotes, irony and by further connecting to his audience with pathos and ethos. By using his own personal experiences as the subject of his argument, Douglass is able to make a strong and compelling case against slavery; at a time when it was socially unacceptable to do so.
Strength of Argument: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Bell Hooks’s essay, "Keeping Close to Home", uses three important components of argument (ethos, pathos, and logos) to support her claim. Hooks develops her essay by establishing credibility with her audience, appealing to the reader’s logic, and stirring their emotions. She questions the role a university should play in the life of a nation, claiming that higher education should not tear a student away from his roots, but help him to build an education upon his background. “Food as thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating,” is an article written by Mary Maxfield in response or reaction to Michael Pollan’s “Escape from the Western Diet”. Michael Pollan tried to enlighten the readers about what they should eat or not in order to stay healthy by offering and proposing a simple theory: “the elimination of processed foods” (443).
Quindlen uses logos effectively by using facts from other sources. It shows when she tells us that, “The agriculture Department estimated in 1999 that twelve million children were hungry or at risk of going hungry.” This is only a small example of the facts she uses. Another example is when she tells us that, “A group of big-city mayors released a study showing that in 200, requests for food assistance from families increased almost 20 percent, more than at any time in the last decade.” These examples show how she is using logos to persuade readers.
In the 1960’s America was divided over the voting rights of African Americans. It was a time of racial and political unrest as president Lyndon B. Johnson encouraged Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act. On March 16, 1965 “We Shall Overcome” was delivered to congress. Lyndon B. Johnson was elected vice president of the United States in 1960 and became the 36th president in 1963. Throughout his speech Johnson uses a variety of strategies to persuade the nation that African Americans have the right to vote. Some of these strategies include ethos, logos, and pathos.
Even in the early times, alcohol was a key component in everyone’s lives. According to Tori Avey in “The Great Gatsby, Prohibition, and Fitzgerald” in colonial times people drank beverages containing alcohol at every meal. Weak beer and cider was the choice dinks in the 1700's (Avey). In the 1800's, farmers were able to cultivate more potent grains to make rum and whiskey (Avey). By 1830 men, 15 years and up, began drinking 88 bottles of whiskey per year; since then numbers have tripled (Avey). Men began losing their jobs, wasting paychecks, and neglecting their families. This called for a change.
