Though everyone today seems to be gushing about the importance of college education but not everyone discusses the heavy price tag attached to it. There is no doubt about the fact that the cost of attending college is on the rise, which has limited the availability of the financial aid options for deserving and underprivileged students. However, still there are a number of funding options that an individual with financial constraints must explore before going to college.

This is the reason that organization like Rotary Club, American Legion, Booster chapters and Jaycees offer scholarships to students that are less competitive that federal ones. These community level options of funding are often overlooked by many students, which hence are the easiest and most convenient way of acquiring funds.
Federal Options: the government of US is well aware of the importance of college education for the economic prosperity of our country, which is the reason that they offer more financial aid to the students acquiring a four year degree than rest of the sources. One of the biggest issues that many students and parents have concerning college education is the cost. Due to the state of the economy, affording college has become very difficult. Fortunately, the government is able to provide financial assistance in addition to the University’s own financial aid. Case is a private institution which means that it costs more compared to a public college. The tuition for Case was approximately, $38,000 in 2007 not including living or book expenses. Even though there was a tuition rate increase for every following year. The only way I was able to afford the tuition at Case was because of the scholarship I earned. In addition, I received federal grants and a substantial amount of aid from the University. I did not have a free ride but I received a great deal of financial help to pay for my college education.

Adding such merit based criteria to Pell Grants means there will be a wide variety of people who are not eligible and thus cheapens the program. Goldrick considered the last merit-based Pell Grant, the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG). When it was implemented in 2006, the ACG gave the Pell Grant to students who took more rigorous high-school work. However, it served far less students than expected, adding substantially to administrative cost, and viewed as a failure (Goldrick, 3). Their idea behind this last-merit based program was to lessen the amount of people who were in need of the Pell Grant, and thus lessening cost. Although education can be expensive, an affordable education makes better citizens. In fact, most people believe that going to college improves the chance of finding a great job, but the effect on society is often not considered. Seeking a higher education, often seems too expensive and the paperwork too complex, therefore many people do not consider attending. When both sides are examined, merit-based aid seems like the best choice when compared to need-based aid. There are two different types of financial aid for college students, merit-based aid and need-based aid. Merit-based aid is given to students with good grades and allows them to not have to pay the full price of college tuition. This allows students who work hard in school to reap some form of reward for their efforts. Need-based aid gives students the ability to continue their education, when they would not have the money for college otherwise.
In regards to school finance, the ultimate goal of school administrators is to provide all students with the most cost effective, comprehensive education that meets all federal, state, and local requirements and that reflects the values and beliefs within the community. This means that it is an expectation for schools to equip all students equally with the best possible educational opportunities that a community is willing to furnish. However, to accomplish this, school administrators must be able to sustain school programs throughout various economic periods.
Many significant questions regarding higher education are in relation to its cost, raising fears that higher education has become unaffordable. Education fee for universities and colleges has continuously grown to become one of the largest expense for most students and parents over the years, especially with the never-ending dramatic tuition fee increases resulting from public funding cuts for education by the federal and state governments.
