Many women have experienced oppression back in the 19th century because they were put In “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “ The Story of an Hour” and “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin, women were not allowed to express themselves, put in social roles, and little by little being dehumanized by their husband in a society influenced by patriarchal laws. In the the academic journal About Women, About Culture, About Us by Martha Minow states that “ The concerns certainly extend to female children, and sometimes to all children, but the examples that recur involve the bodies and social roles of women and girls”. This demonstrates that not only women were put in social roles but also girls as well. In the short story “The Story of an Hour” Louise was put in a social role when Chopin stated “It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought”. This indicated that Mrs.Mallard was feeling a sense of joy that her husband died but was expected to mourn her husband by being depressed because that was a womanly and weak thing to do. In addition to women being put in social roles is in “ The Yellow Wallpaper”, Gilman claims that “Nobody would believe what an effort it is to do what little I am able,- to dress and entertain, and order things.”(769). Many women were put in social roles like being a baby maker. Gilman’s point is that women were suppose to be entertainment, the housekeeper of their house and to look good for others to be seen as a respected capable women. However in “The Awakening” Edna was put into social roles but she was a rebellious protagonist and she broke those roles to become a free individual. When her husband and children are gone, she moves out of the house and purses her own ambitions. She starts painting and feeling happier. “There were days when she was very happy without knowing why. She was happy to be alive and breathing when her whole being seemed to be one with the sunlight, the color, the odors, the luxuriant warmth of some perfect Southern day” (Chopin 69). Her sacrifice greatly contributed to her disobedient actions. Since she wanted to be free from a societal rule of a mother-woman that she never wanted to be in, she emphasizes her need for expression of her own passions. Her needs reflect the meaning of the work and other women too. The character of Edna conveys that women are also people who have dreams and desires they want to accomplish and not be pinned down by a stereotype.

Two interesting short stories, “The Yellow Wall-paper and “The Story of an Hour, “ focus on a woman’s plight near the turn of the 19th century. This era is especially interesting because it is a time in modern society when women were still treated as second class citizens. The two main characters in these stories show similarities, but they are also remarkably different in the ways they deal with their problems and life in general. These two characters will be examined to note the commonalities and differences. Although the two characters are similar in some ways, it will be shown that the woman in the “The Story of an Hour” is a stronger character based on the two important criteria of rationality and freedom.
Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” and Charlotte Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” are both centralized on the feministic views of women coming out to the world. Aside from the many differences within the two short stories, there is also similarities contained in Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” and Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper,” such as the same concept of the “rest treatment” was prescribed as medicine to help deal with their sickness, society’s views on the main character’s illness, and both stories parallel in the main character finding freedom in the locked rooms that they contain themselves in.
In Chopin's Awakening, the reader meets Edna Pontellier, a married woman who attempts to overcome her "fate", to avoid the stereotypical role of a woman in her era, and in doing so she reveals the surrounding. society's assumptions and moral values about women of Edna's time. Edna helps to reveal the assumptions of her society. The people surrounding her each day, particularly women, assume their roles as "housewives"; while the men are free to leave the house, go out at night, gamble, drink and work. Edna surprises her associates when she takes up painting, which represents a working job and independence for Edna.

Until the second half of the twentieth century, there was great inequality between the social and economic conditions of men and women (Pearson Education). The battle for women's emancipation, however, had started in 1848 by the first women's rights convention, which was led by some remarkable and brave women (Pearson Education). One of the most notable feminists of that period was the writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman. She was also one of the most influential feminists who felt strongly about and spoke frequently on the nineteenth-century lives for women. Her short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper" characterizes the condition of women of the nineteenth century through the main character’s life and actions in the text. It is considered to be one of the most influential pieces because of its realism and prime examples of treatment of women in that time. This essay analyzes issues the protagonist goes through while she is trying to break the element of barter from her marriage and love with her husband. This relationship status was very common between nineteenth-century women and their husbands.
These behaviors serve as the opposite of women/mothers such as Madame Adele Ratignolle. The typical woman of this time, would be more like Adele, caring towards her family and taking on the role of a “good housewife”. She would have followed the “conventions” of the time whereas Edna did not. Many women felt like their sole purpose was to care for their children and husband. The typical women “were women who idolized their children, worshipped their husbands, and esteemed it a holy privilege to efface themselves as individuals and grow wings as ministering angels” (Chopin). Edna was unlike these women because she did not idolize or worship anyone. She was willing to do many things for her children but she plainly stated that she would never give up who she was for her children. She would die for her children but never give up her identity, personality, and beliefs. Edna was also never described as a beautiful woman, “she was rather handsome than beautiful” (Chopin). Edna thrives to be more like Mademoiselle Reisz who is not concerned with beauty and standards, but dedicated herself to music and art. "The Yellow Wallpaper," by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, tells the story of a woman's descent into madness as a result of the "rest and ignore the problem cure" that is frequently prescribed to cure hysteria and nervous conditions in women. More importantly, the story is about control and attacks the role of women in society. The narrator of the story is symbolic for all women in the late 1800s, a prisoner of a confining society. Women are expected to bear children, keep house and do only as they are told. Since men are privileged enough to have education, they hold jobs and make all the decisions. Thus, women are cast into the prison of acquiescence because they live in a world dominated by men. Since men suppress women, John, the narrator's husband, is presumed to have control over the protagonist. Gilman, however, suggests otherwise. She implies that it is a combination of society's control as well as the woman's personal weakness that contribute to the suppression of women. Wives did not have any rights to their own property, and they would not have right to wages they earn. But these started to change through feminist women who raised their voice against men. In her short story, "Story of an Hour", and novel "The Awakening", Kate Chopin explores the themes of woman rebellion against their husbands, and woman becoming independent from their husbands. Even though Kate Chopin was born in 1850 she was a feminist writer. Kate was a woman ahead of time, and most of her writing portrays feminism. There were three main facts that made Kate write about these themes; First was the role models that she had in her family, second the hard life she had, and third her education.
The Crucible is a strong and captivating play that explores several themes from power and politics to social injustice in Salem, Massachusetts, in the 1600s.
