Sports are a prevalent part of culture and are reflected to be social edifices within culture created by assemblies of individuals and centered on morals, benefits, necessities, and capitals. Sport arrangements are formed by assemblies of individuals. Each culture forms and uses sports for its own determinations; hence, sports take different forms from culture to culture. This unswervingly relates to the notion of physical motion and isometrics for diverse cultures. Since several dynamics, such as religious conviction, governments, and finances, definite groups of persons may have restricted access or be constrained or prohibited to participate in sports and isometrics activities. Consequently the significance of sports takes on dissimilar connotations in diverse cultures. Additional aspects, such as which controls sports, what recompenses (essential or non-essential) are acknowledged from sports involvement and the prominence of the athlete have some influence on the significance and place of sports in a specific civilization.
To comprehend the significance of sports, standards within American culture need be implicit. Standards are established on a number of customs that develop from faith, race, background, and topographical location. The basis of our standards is the concepts and notions about what is virtuous, immoral, true, and erroneous and what is sought after. For instance, the basketball jersey may not appeal in some cultures due to the fact it doesn’t have sleeves. An easy fix for this would be to make basketball t-shirts instead, all of the look of a regular jersey, just with sleeves which can be removed if wanted.

Also, when overseas corporations that participate in distributing do well, they often generate occupations in other regions. In Introduction to the Philosophy of Sport, Heather L. Reid presents a discussion of how ethics is treated in the arena of Olympism and some of the struggles of defining and how or if the ethical guidelines should be enforced. Reid notes, “Some would say that ethical principles are always the product of a particular culture, so there can no more be universal ethical principles than there can be a universal culture” (Reid, 22). I disagree with the notion that there cannot be universal ethical principles for athletes to follow in sport because even across cultures there are general morals that shape the lives of people from all over the world. Sports have big place in American Society, but there is more important things in life than sports. Playing sports is important for physical health but academics should be the main focus for everyone.
The presence of activity and sport is found within cultures and societies all over the world, and throughout history. Activity in the form of sport can often be the purest form of expression for a society or individual. The sporting world is often thought to be a microcosm of the actual world with the problems and issues of society still being ever present in the sporting community. Since sport can be used as an expression of self, it is no wonder that sport is often a reflection of the society that it occupies. One such society that was deeply impacted by the role of sport is that of Native American boarding school students in the 1800’s and 1900’s. These students lived tough lives but just like how it had helped other cultural societies, sport was able to provide these students with basic needs of autonomy and pride.
As it becomes increasingly acceptable for women to be athletic in American culture, a new question arises: in which sports should women be allowed to participate? From a physiological standpoint, it has been scientifically proven that female bodies do not differ significantly enough from male bodies to prevent them from participation in any "male" sports. This division between "male" and "female" sports clearly stems from age-old, socially constructed norms of femininity and masculinity. When women attempt to challenge these societal molds by participating in sports that are traditionally male, the intricate web of norms is disrupted. Like many other instances where traditional social constructions are tinkered with, individuals and communities are forced to reevaluate how they think about and categorize their surroundings. I would argue that women's participation in athletics, especially in non-traditional sports, is instrumental in breaking down stereotypes and social confines that have plagued women for centuries
1. It has become much harder to identify the true and amateur-taught values around sport in our culture. The passion for competition, the aspect of a team, and the actions of sportsmanship are deep values that sports act to instill. It becomes one of the most important ways to teach those values to our young and unfortunately is becoming easy to forget. Throughout the semester we scrutinized sports, looking at their influence, role, and meaning in our American society today. Two foundations to view sport, critical and functionalist theory, were brought upon early in the semester, laying groundwork for looking at the rest of the topics. I believe the question posed by Prebish asking whether sport is a parallel to religion or identical means that sport is very closely related to the same principles. It is an organized institution dealing with faith, discipline, tradition, rituals, and has devout followers, as does the religious institution. When a sport can bring its followers to an experience of the ultimate plateau of complete focus, oneness, devotion, and the quest for salvation, I believe this is identical to religion.

During this era, athletics in college, basketball in particular, proved that many native-born citizens became Americans through participation in sports in which their accomplishments merited praise. Sports, a very popular past time today, have been around since ancient times. Greek Olympic Games featured events from chariot races, javelin throws, to wrestling. In addition, a game similar to soccer was played in China by the second century BC. In England, a violent rugby type game was even played to settle feuds between villages. With the development of the industrial revolution and the creation of the first public schools, sports decreased in violence and were played more recreationally and constructively. Basketball was invented to help the youth in New England spend their energy in the winter months. Since the early 1900’s sports have been a key experience in the United States (“History of Sports”). I have played sports for many years, and the experience has helped me grow significantly as an individual.
