The play Oedipus the King, published in 1924 is one of the most well known greek tragedies in the world. It is believed to have been written around the year 430 B.C. by an extremely famous Greek author, Sophocles. The play starts with a prophecy being told to Oedipus’ parents, the king and queen of Thebes. The prophecy stated that Oedipus would kill his father and marry his mother, and to insure that this prophecy would not be fulfilled, his parents ordered a messenger to killed Oedipus. However, the messenger could not complete this task, so instead he gave him to the king and queen of Corinth.
