Choosing this field is something that has a profound connection with my personal life. Becoming a Diagnostic Medical sonographer would mean that I have accomplished life long dream. Ever since I was a little, I always wanted to be in the medical field. I have always had a big heart and wanted to help people so when I saw the important role that sonographers play in the medical field, it became clear to me that being a sonographer was exactly what I want to do with my life. In 2007 someone who was very important to me passed away due to gastric cancer. When my grandmother, who was a mother, father, and a friend to me, was diagnosed with gastric cancer my world collapsed. During the endoscopy procedure to determine the stage of her cancer, she said it was the sonographer who made her feel calm and treated her with dignity. Even though the ultrasound tech did not understand her language, it did not stop her from showing compassion to her patient. So it was that great care and sense of compassion that made me greatly appreciate what sonographers do for their patients. This is a field that is constantly changing and there are always ways to improve. There is always new technologies coming out and ways to improve as person that will help you deliver the best care for your patients. Although being academically smart is an important factor for this program, there are also other qualities that are just as important if not more. Some of those qualities that can make you an exceptional sonographer are being compassionate, caring, and being able to work well with others. The reason why I said this is because I believe “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care” (John C. Maxwell). Also it’s critical that you understand the concept of teamwork and that you can work well with others. In this field you need to work with doctors and other caregivers to deliver the best care for the patient. I can assure you that if you give me this opportunity to study in this great program, you will not be disappointed, but in fact be pleased, because I will do whatever it takes to complete this program successfully and become a great diagnostic medical sonographer. Diagnostic medical sonography is a profession where sonographers direct high-frequency sound waves into a patient’s body through the use of specific equipment to diagnose or monitor a patient’s medical condition. As described by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this examination is referred to as an ultrasound, sonogram, or echocardiogram. The high-frequency sound waves emitted from the handheld device, called a transducer, bounce back creating an echo and therefore produce an image that can be viewed on the sonographers computer screen. This image provides the sonographer and physician with an internal image of the patient’s body that will be used in the diagnosis. The most familiar use of ultrasound is used in monitoring pregnancies and is provided by obstetric and gynecologic sonographers, who also provide imaging of the female reproductive system. Other types of sonography include; abdominal sonography, breast sonography, musculoskeletal sonography, neurosonography and cardiovascular sonography. Due to the vast nature of uses in sonography, most professionals study one field that they choose to specialize in. Diagnostic medical sonography is a rapidly growing field because of the increase in medical advances. The area of Cleveland, Ohio has continued to rise in the medical field with great strides, providing better career prospects with the availability of numerous employment positions.

The dream that I most desire in life is to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I’ve always had an interest in the inner workings of the human body, but I also value life, and care for others, and my happiness is the happiness of others. Although this career has its bumps on the road just to see mothers face light up when they see the image of their unborn baby is such a breath taking experience. This all originated from going to one of my sisters’ ultrasound appointment that I ended up going to all my sisters’ ultrasound appointments. “Here’s the baby’s heartbeat,” the ultrasound tech said to the excited parents, who were staring at the projection screen awestruck at the sight of their baby. I watched amazed as I too was awestruck, never before have I seen an ultrasound. The parents came into the hospital that day to have the baby’s measurements taken to see if it was safe for the mother to be induced. I continued to watch the tech while she measured, I couldn’t help but marvel over the fact that this may seem like a small act for medicine, but an important step for making sure the baby came into this world safe and happy. It is one I know I will love and will be much more than just a job. It gives ordinary people the opportunity to be a proponent for every patient especially those who may fall through the cracks of the health care system. With that being said, I established important goals to remain on this path for success. Earlier this year I had to go to the doctor and I found out that this area of Texas has very few ultrasound technicians and that they even had to call someone from Arizona to come help. In an area like this where sports is a major part of the culture. Choosing a career like this, in the medical field is a sound decision. The best job for me would have to be an ultrasound technician because the dress code is casual, it requires action, and the pay is good.

The career I chose was an OB/GYN because I want to help with young children at the youngest stage of development. These physicians, whom provide medical care at the finest, relate o pregnancy or childbirth, and those who diagnose, treat, and help prevent dieses of women; mostly those affecting the respiratory system. OB/GYN’s may also general medical care to women. They treat and console women throughout their pregnancy and deliver babies.
Throughout this researched that I investigated I became interested in this field in a way. If I had an option in medical field I would take the option. Knowing that you are helping patients out is an amazing feeling. I would work with infants rather than adults. I would cherish every moment because you would never know if that’s the last time to work with the patient not just because of death but maybe cause they might recover from there sickness.
When I was born, my father was in medical school. He was a practicing doctor by the time I was four and was the first person in southern California to get an MRI machine for his office. According to the CDC, in adults over the age of 20, 69.2% are overweight and 35.9% are overweight (2010). With the average weight of the general adult patient generally increasing, this makes jobs harder for many in the healthcare field, especially sonographers. Abdominal imaging is generally deep imaging with a great deal of force required to push down into the tissue in order to create diagnostic image. Oftentimes, these are long exams with multiple organs and/or vessels to examine. Combine the multiple layers of adipose tissue, overlying bowel gas, and possible skin folds to work around will only increase the exam time putting further strain put on the scanning arm. Considering all of these factors, more and more often sonographers must resort to putting “limited exam due to patient body habitus” because the exam did not yield diagnostic quality images. Considering most of the profession works in hospitals, there are also impatient exams to consider. Patients are brought down in a bed or a wheelchair and commonly have limited mobility, if they are able to move at all. Transport will drop the patient off and the sonographer is left to assist the patient out of the wheelchair or on to the bed alone. The weight of a patient combined with a scenario in which the sonographer is having to lift said patient by him or herself puts great strain on the arms and back. If the patient is already in a bed, the sonographer must work around the large, bulky, sometimes non-adjustable bed in order to access the area they need to get to. Contorting the body and twisting the spine into awkward positions further increases the chance of injury
