Entertainment as a Controller As our society has progressed since the beginning of its creation, there have been many the developments of “artificial” and man-created aspects of society, such as money, taxes, and so forth, that have developed into either a benefit or hindrance to society. One such aspect that is beginning to be a hindrance to society is entertainment. Although there is portion of our modern society which will argue entertainment’s beneficial value, they will fail to see how it has become a force of control in our daily lives that has created a socially inept, stagnant, and dumbed down society. As technology continues to grow, entertainment's power continues to do so too.

That is why John, in Brave New World, states that his society cannot resist the temptations from entertainment, and that it will always fall within its grasp, no matter how hard society tries to push back( Brave New World). What Brave New World illustrates is that entertainment and society have developed to a point since the 20th century where it is ever-present and all-surrounding in the modern landscape, and its influence can be escaped from, being the ultimate form of control. There are people who will say entertainment has in fact created a creative, not a controlled society, whose views are subtly and subliminally being changed through entertainment. It is important to note that some levels of entertainment are not only healthy, but necessary to alleviate people’s fears and stresses, but just as with anything, moderation is key. It is the excess of entertainment and modern tendency to become focused only on entertainment, as exemplified by how our work week is aimed at reaching the “fun” we have provided ourselves on weekend, that leads entertainment to develop this binding control on what we desire, and what we give up. Overall, entertainment will only continue to be a growing and progressing staple of society, but if we fail to recognize its ability to influence how we think and act, we are only setting our society up a path of which not only is there no point of return, but also one where we all very well could become virtual living, socially dead, and trivial
While there is a very sound argument regarding whether or not entertainment had the capacity to ruin society. One must consider that entertainment can be interpreted differently by each individual. Entertainment, in general, can be either beneficial or detrimental to society which varies on the use of all the outlets of entertainment. Although there are negatives that are created from entertainment there are positive factors which arise from music, video games, and television.

Brave New World Society's Moral Decline Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World out of fear of society's apparent lack of morals and corrupt behaviour during the roaring twenties. Huxley believed that the future was doomed to a non-individualistic, conformist society, a society void of the family unit, religion and human emotions. Throughout the novel, Huxley predicts many events for the future, most of which concentrate on a morally corrupt society. The most important of these predictions include: greater sexual freedom, over-population, brain-washing/sleep-teaching, and the use of mind altering drugs. The World State decision to eliminate emotions is a horrible choice because everyone has the right to feel the way they want to. In the “Brave New World”, no one is allowed to be themselves. They take soma to block society emotions, and everyone is for everyone. Without soma the World State would be completely insane. The World State is not right for the decision to eliminate emotions. Relationships, Social body, and Stability, should always be a right to everyone.

Video games currently play a substantial role in our culture as more than half of all Americas play some type of video game. ( Green, Bavelier, 2 ) Although the advancement of video games has gotten a bad reputation, there are still multiple ways that they can be used as helpful. If the right actions are taken, many negative consequences can be avoided and there can be positive outcomes. There will always be a market for violent and sexual video games. Can a utopian society ever exist? The answer to that question is a blunt no. Everyone’s different expectations create a world with many diversities. The society in Brave New World is considered dystopian because the people are living under the assumption that their world is perfect. They have a major drug addiction and uncontrolled sexual intercourse, plus a whole lot of other social issues. While our current society may not be perfect, it would be far better off than the society pictured in the novel. Therefore, the society in Brave New World is different from the current society in the United States of America.
I should receive a passing grade in this class because I can write now. Not just an exaggeration, but after another semester of English I finally feel confident that can write. Three of the reasons behind my confidence is I learned, I experienced and best of all I repeated. These three values helped prepare me for what is in store in English 1302 and here is why.
Imagine a new James Bond movie just hit theaters, and everybody will rush down to the local movie theater to see it. The movie exhibits an overabundance of action-packed scenes that could stimulate anyone’s senses. However, what good does this film contribute to society? Nothing; it displays the life of an undercover CIA agent who kicks butt for a living, a theme many cannot compare to. James Bond, and many other movies, do not give back to society in a positive aspect, and it is no just limited to movies-T.V. shows, music, plays, and books all count as forms of entertainment that have the capacity to ruin society. This is relevant because we all mindlessly watch, read, and listen to these forms of media without processing how they affect us as a society, and as a result, we find ourselves subliminally wanting to partake in the messages we receive via the media. Opposing viewpoints may state that entertainment does not have the potential to ruin society, and they might blame the people themselves for corruption and disunity in our contemporary culture. However, entertainment, in all its forms, has the ability to obliterate society because it displays unrealistic lifestyles, influences younger audiences to engage in risky activities, and makes its viewers unintelligent.
Video games have come under fire recently. Many people claim the graphic violence and adult themes in the games have affected younger generations and caused many violent acts. Others claim that video games have contributed to obesity and a lack of communication skills. Both of these claims are most often an older generation's misunderstanding of today's youth and the overreaction of the media. Rarely does the mainstream media portray video games for what they really are, a new way for kids to interact and share meaningful experiences all without being in any danger. Video games have endless possibilities and should be thought of as tools to teach the youth rather than the cancer that ravages them. Although many people see video games as a problem, they are actually a positive force because they have infinite possibilities for good.
I agree that entertainment has the capacity to ruin society. Entertainment is everywhere, and there are millions of people around the world every day who are influenced by entertainment. There are commercials and shows on TV, lots of music, radio commercials, comedians and actors, and video games, as well as many more forms of entertainment that reach millions of people daily. Wherever you look, there are bound to be people immersed in some form on entertainment, whether that be games on their cell phone, radio, or music. Since we are so reliant on entertainment to distract and captivate us, it is a reasonable statement to say that entertainment could run, and possibly ruin, society.
