Recommended: How was disease a major factor in the success of European colonization

There were many diseases brought to America from Europe, but only one changed the American landscape during the late 16th century. There was no disease that influenced American colonization more than Small Pox. Small Pox is an infectious disease caused by one of two viruses. Small Pox caused pustules on the body which often led to death, and if a person survived, they were likely to be blind. Small Pox has been eradicated as of 1977, but up to that point had killed millions of people around the world. Imported diseases were more devastating to Native Americans. These diseases like measles, typhoid, cholera, and Small Pox were new to Native Americans, and they had not built up any internal immunities or created any medicine to prevent or

Considering the author’s argument, Fenn clarifies the diverse impact that smallpox had on North Americans depending on their race and social status during the American Revolution.

In short, they were able to kill without being killed. In this way, the travel of disease in conjunction with the travel of humans in a search for exotic commodities was able to limit or even halt the development of some cultures while allowing others to flourish at exponential rates.
