Have you ever complained about having too much homework? Teens all around the world are constantly piled up with homework to do overnight, that teachers expect to be done the next day. I believe that this generation receives too much homework for three main reasons. Those being that too much homework causes illness, and each grade should have ten minutes per grade level a night, but others say it might test our knowledge.
The first reason why I believe our generation has too much homework is that doing too much work can cause illness and even depression. According to Dr. William Crain, professor of psychology at a college in New York, people are developing homework-related illnesses such as major aches in the stomach and head, sleeping issues, and depression. If kids are stuck inside their rooms all the

The National Education Association recently issued a homework guideline. The guideline states that kids should only have ten minutes of homework per grade level every night. This means that when kids are stuck inside all day doing homework, they should definitely be able to have free time. Average kids in highschool or middle school should only have between an hour or two hours of homework, leaving them plenty of time to do their own thing.
Many others might say that homework helps exercise your brain and makes you smarter, and that’s only partly true. Homework can be a good thing, but teachers need to decrease the amount they are giving their students. If teens are stuck in their rooms doing homework all day, they can lose the ability to socialize or fall into a pit of depression. Doing homework all day might also lead to an attention span problem and can distract them from the outside world. The lack of physical activity can cause kids to become obese or unhealthy in some other way, leading to a more unhealthy
Most students believe that they have too much homework and not a sufficient time to finish it on time and it’s killing them. In these two essays “Too Much Homework, Too Little Time” by user name Laxdoublek on Teenink.com and “Satire: Homework Epidemic” by Ellen Keith of Medford High School, have many similarities and differences about the topic homework. Their essays are for everyone to realize just how much homework students in school are given. Keith does a better job getting her point across to the reader than Laxdoublek.
Excessive homework causes students to give up time with their loved ones and activities, and that could lead to social problems. The stress, the lack of sleep, and even depression are only some of the health effects that large amounts of homework can cause students. After two hours of homework, it can start to be counterproductive, which makes it lose its purpose. Some people might disagree that large amounts of homework is bad, but in reality it has more negative effects than positive. Now is the time to quit the large homework loads and make a change for the better learning, health, and social life of the
There have been so many studies recently that talk about how homework has started to become more burdensome for more students. The United States has gone from teaching to shoving homework in kids’ faces to keep them on the idea that school is always there. Classes have been extended from 45 minutes each day to an hour and a half. This was supposed to allow students work time at the end of classes and get help when needed. Instead, teachers lecture from beginning to end. This gives no time for students to get the help they need when can’t come in any other time. The rationale has changed in America that doing more, always means doing better. This, however, can be the downfall to anything. There can’t be homework assigned just for busy work, that becomes a waste of time. The homework needs to be assigned as a thoughtful way to engage students, so they know what is being
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
A study in 2002 shows that homework causes kids moods to increased anxiety, depression, anger, and other mood disturbances among students. (Coulson)Kids have a seven hour day of school and then on top of that teachers are piling up a minimum of one thirty minutes worth of homework in each class. When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.
A problem with elementary students having homework is that their parents end up doing it just to get it over with. According to today.com there was a rule established by the National Education Association that limits the amount of homework any age kid, especially elementary should have to do. This is called “the 10 minute rule.” Kindergarten students should not get homework but first graders gets 10 minutes, second graders gets 20 and so on. This rule has been broken by teachers giving kindergarten students almost as much homework as a third grader should have. Because this rule is so often broken, parents are forced to step in and help their kids so they don’t look back on their life as all I did was homework.
What is an agreeable amount of homework for a high school student? A student might say one hour, a teacher would say three. However, neither of these ideal amounts of homework are correct as far more is given every night. Teachers do believe that this helps the student to learn on a deeper level, but it instead stresses out students on a deeper level. Because health issues, excessive stress, and loss of interest in the learning experience result from overworked high school students, school need to limit the amount of homework given to their students.
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is a waste and kids and teens should choose whether they want to do their homework for extra credit and practice or not.
According to blogs.edweek.org the average amount of homework per night in high schools is 3.5 hours a night! Research has been shown that kids have 3 times more expected homework by the NEA and national PTA according to the website “Do Our Kids Have Too Much Homework?” Teachers have been raising the expectations on homework for a while and this is why kids should
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
“Maltese and his colleagues pointed out that if high school teachers most nights assign just one hour of homework, that amounts to about 180 class periods of 50 minutes apiece. Essentially, they noted, an hour of homework each night adds another class period to the school day.”("Schools Ditching Homework.."All these middle and high school students have to get all these done it doesn’t seem that hard of a task to do put still but’s pressure on the kids. The parents get frustrated because their kids can’t do family time because their kids have a stack of things to do that's in their back packs. It also cause problems at home as a teacher says in
Dr. Michael Nagel, an associate professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast, says homework has no scientific benefit and that it could even be bad for a student’s brain. “The adult brain does not fully mature until the third decade of life (a person’s thirty’s) and too much stimulation could cause unnecessary stress on a student.” An analysis conducted by Pearson showed that the number of hours spent on homework was between ten and sixty-five hours a week, with females scoring higher on the hours of homework, stres...
Homework doesnt help students, it hurts them. Students are drilled with work during the school hours and then are giving homework from almost all of their teachers every night. There are negative points of overloading students with homework. According to William Crain, Ph. D., a professor of psychology at City College of New York and the author
Students are bombarded with hours of homework every night and it interferes with their lives. They are tired of staying up late at night to finish their homework or a paper that is due the next day. They should not have this workload that they have every night because they also have to live their childhood. Life is too short to be staying up until 11:00 because of schoolwork. Homework is unhealthy for students and it is not academically beneficial for them.
