Should illegal immigrants be allowed to stay in the United States? The statue of liberty is one of America’s famous icons. It stands 305 feet above Liberty Island looking at New York’s historic harbor and enshrining the idea of freedom from oppression. The Lady Liberty has been welcoming millions of immigrants seeking a better life in the United States, however illegal immigration is becoming a much larger issue than when she was built in 1886. With over 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States, the question frequently arises, What should be done about them? Now is the best time to figure that out! The illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the United States of America. The illegals assist in balancing out demand for low wage workers and continue to boost the American economy. They benefit our local and state governments by paying taxes and dividends …show more content…
To begin, an illegal immigrant is defined as “an alien (non-citizen) who has entered the United States without government permission or stayed beyond the termination date of a visa.”(“illegal immigrant”,def.1). It is important to first define “illegal immigrant” before continuing this discussion. Illegal immigration has progressively gotten worse throughout the years, and has lead some Americans to believe that illegal immigrants have caused major economic problems and continue shrink the domestic job market for foreign workers or more importantly United States citizens. But is that really the case? The current positive economic impact made by illegal immigrant workers is tremendous, if we decided to mass deport all of them, it would cripple the United States economy. Illegal immigrants provide the United States with low-wage workers that are difficult or even scarce to find. Which allows our businesses to provide us with products at a
The United States was formed by the immigration of many people from all over the world. Americans take pride in knowing that we are a people of vast ethnic backgrounds and culture. However, at the present time, the flow of illegal immigration, as well as a large influx of other legal immigrants is placing a strain on our land of "huddled masses." Legal immigration to the United States can easily be handled and is welcomed by most Americans. However, the flow of illegal immigrants, especially from Mexico, must be stemmed, due to the strain it is placing on the government, (at the local, state and federal level), as well as the general population. Illegal immigrants are costing the United States over 24 billion dollars a year in taxpayers money (National Review 12.13.93). Something must be done to reduce the flow of illegal immigration into the United States. The focus of this paper will be the problems caused by and possible solutions to the problem of illegal immigration.
Among the problems that face our nation, illegal immigration seems to be one of the most regarded. “In 2005, there were 12.7 million people classified as refugees in the world. Refugees are forced to migrate because of danger in their own country.” (Cath Senker 12) Some push to end it while others want to have it legalized or less strict. There are many points that are argued on this topic. Although immigrants support the economy, they should have to pay taxes. Illegal immigration should be stopped or slowed until the legalization process and borders are improved. Due to the fact, that taxpayers are the backbone of our economy and nation as a whole.
Illegal immigration has been a problem that has plagued the United States for many years. This problem is not new to the country because thousands of immigrants have crossed over the oceans and Mexican border since our country was founded. The underlying problem is the lack of assimilation to the American ways of life and the acceptance of existing rules and laws. With the already fragile economy and the largely growing unemployment rate Americans must make every effort to close its borders to undocumented workers to ease the strain and retain any available jobs for unemployed Americans and legal workers. Aviva Chomsky writes “immigration plays a much more complex role in the employment picture, and many different factors affecting employment and unemployment.”(4). Chomsky so on to say, “it indeed seems to be the case that immigrants and low-skilled citizens are competing for the same jobs”(11). Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants enter the country and start working either under illegal names or take agricultural jobs in which they are paid under the table. Chomsky solidifies this fact when she say “some immigrants work in the informal economy, and are paid under the table in-cash, so they don’t have federal and state income taxes, or social security taxes, deducted from their paychecks”(36).Which a lot of employers are catching on to because on doing this they don’t have to pay taxes and can turn more of a profit This also hurts the country’s economy because no one is paying their taxes and so there is no money flowing to pull the country out of the current recession. This burden indefinitely falls on the shoulders of the rest of the legal citizens of America who are inevitable paying the way for this one sided labor for...
Illegal immigration has many diverse effects on the United States economy. Some people argue that the negative outweigh the positive, but there is no doubt that immigrants do carry a critical role.
The mass deportation of undocumented immigrants categorizes them as second class citizens. People assume they provide a burden to society, and many policy makers have taken steps in order to oust them. The first being IIRIRA. In reality undocumented people have every right to be here. The economic slump of their native countries is a consequence of US actions and policies, and undocumented workers provide a great economic benefit to the US. In “Border America: illegal but essential, experts say undocumented immigrants are a driving force in the economy despite a toll to public services and unskilled workers,” by David Streitfeld the benefits undocumented workers provide for the economy are outlined. Streitfeld writes that economist agree that undocumented workers contribute to consumer spending and instead of replacing workers actually create jobs. Undocumented workers have a negative stigma that they misuse resources and steal jobs from citizens, but they do the opposite. The influx of undocumented workers has stimulated the
Second of all, immigrants are taking jobs in the United States, but they are taking the jobs that Americans do not want because of the pay and extraneous hard labor. Most immigrants work in factories, small businesses, or farms. One thing that I disagree with is that the illegal immigrants have a good and bad effect to the economy and the country. For example in the new we mostly hear about some of the illegal immigrants are committing a crime and not applying for visa. Sometimes they even still others social security numbers. Illegal immigrants some not all sometimes bring drugs into the USA which I think is the most dangerous thing they can do besides kill. One problem in today 's society is people view all immigrants as labor workers. People tend to believe that immigrants "threaten" American life by causing unemployment. Employers think that they are doing us a big favor by hiring immigrants for under wage and not hiring people that are born in the USA cause we do not like to be worked for under the state law of minimum
The United States of America, being a country founded by immigrants, is known all over the world as the land of great opportunities. People from all walks of life travelled across the globe, taking a chance to find a better life for them and their family. Over the years, the population of immigrants has grown immensely, resulting in the currently controversial issue of illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants are the people who have overstayed the time granted on their US, visa or those who have broken the federal law by crossing the border illegally. Matt O’Brien stated in his article “The government thinks that 10.8 million illegal immigrants lived in the country in January 2009, down from a peak of nearly 12 million in 2007.”(Para, 2) While some argue that illegal immigrants burden the United States of America and its economy, others believe that they have become essential and are an important part of the US, economy.
“I am not the ‘Illegal’ you think I am, and immigration is not what you think it is” Why do people cross the line illegally? there are many reasons for undocumented immigrants to cross to the united states do to the poverty in the country, high level of education in the united states, and the better opportunity of jobs. Many immigrants decide to emigrate from their country of birth to seek a new opportunity for all the family but analyze the information is not only one culture a lot of different cultures immigrant to have a better life in the united states. Undocumented immigration is a big issue in the united states because many immigrants come to live the “ American Dream”. Immigrants from all around the different country
From the beginning of the United States, immigrants have always played an integral role. The nation itself was built on immigration, whether to escape persecution or war; however, the United States, as it progressed has had instances where immigrant groups have had issues assimilating into society whether due to the political wave running through the nation or from an economic depression. One group, that has been experiencing this difficulty assimilating into society has been Mexicans who have, since the beginning of the 1960’s, have been coming over in droves to escape the poverty, corruption, and drugs that run rampant in Mexico. So, although the United States was established on immigration, the United States has had an issue with the incoming
Illegal immigration is a complex issue that impacts the United States in many different ways, in particular the economy of the country is one that is impacted the most (Illegal immigration a $113 billion a year drain on U.S. taxpayers). Sanctuary cities have provided many safeguards to keep undocumented immigrants from being deported, thus creating many incentives for people outside the United States that are thinking of coming to the United States illegally. Illegal immigration is caused in part by sanctuary cities.
their higher education since it is hard for them to return back to their home countries (229). In
Occasionally, we take things in life for granted and never truly realize the importance or the impact, until it’s actually gone. There’s around twelve million people living in the United States illegally; however, they contribute eminently to our economy, and we wouldn’t be here today, without them. If we were to deport all these immigrants back to their homelands, imagine what the U.S. economy would be like. These undocumented immigrants devote their money, time and fear of deportation, for a country they aren’t even legal citizens of. If that’s not devotion, then try to comprehend what is. They contribute to our economy as consumers, taxpayers, and determined workers. Immigrants, illegal or not, can bring a great deal of benefits to the table
The United States is often referred as a melting pot because of its large immigration rates. “The Land of the free” has a hugely wide range of cultural diversity which helps this country. In the past couple of years the Immigration rates have grown drastically. Immigration has spiked an extreme debate in congress on whether illegal immigrants should or should not be deported. I think that illegal immigrants should not be deported.
According to people that support illegal immigration say that undocumented immigrants work for cheaper labor and they are also hardworking because they like to save up so they can bring their families to the U. S. Also, illegal immigrants try to always keep their jobs because it’s really hard for them to get another one since they are undocumented. Because most of the time they do not speak English they cannot get a normal job due to the fact that they don’t have the proper forms of identification. Illegal immigrants make up a large part of the manual labor job force in the country. Whether it be construction, landscaping, or other forms of housework, illegal immigrants provide a labor force at much cheaper prices. So they work more and they get paid less. Undocumented aliens are willing to take all kinds of jobs. Americans don 't take those jobs so illegal immigrants take care of those jobs. Illegal immigrants who work also pay taxes and that money helps the U.S economy. “Legalizing the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States would boost the nation’s economy. It would add a cumulative $1.5 trillion to the U.S. gross domestic product — the largest measure of economic growth — over 10 years,” according to Amanda Peterson
Although crime and terrorism has increased because of the absence of carrying out immigration policy, illegal immigration has caused the most effect on the economy. Most people think that illegal immigrants make the country more efficient and do jobs that U.S. citizens do not want to do. Although the truth is that these illegal immigrants are taking legal citizens jobs. As
