Hello, I’m Mimi Sharon and I believe that higher level math should be taught in middle schools due to its positive in-school effects. First of all, the main importance of teaching this subject is to introduce students to these advanced topics and give them a chance to excel in them. After all, if schools never teach the subjects early on, how are kids supposed to know if they like the subject or are good at it when they sign up for high school and college courses? Along with simply knowing if they are good at the course, learning higher maths early on allows students more freedom in high school and college if they finish the required math courses early. Even while still in middle school, many students are ahead of their class and find themselves stuck relearning material. With the introduction of a more advanced math class, these students could work to their full potential.

According to the Public Policy Institute of California, an average student who takes advanced algebra is over 10 percentage points more likely to attend and graduate college and is also more likely to receive a better all-around education as well. Even students who major in not math oriented subjects have a visible advantage if they take higher level maths. Great Schools.org also states that it’s better to learn math at a younger age, as many who didn’t have higher math early on find themselves not prepared for high school and college courses, causing them to lag behind or have to retake remedial math. This causes the student to spend longer than necessary obtaining their degree, increasing the already expensive student
