When you read the song “Shake it off” by Taylor Swift it is clear what the connotation could be. When looking at the denotation of the poem and then understanding the figurative language in the poem, you begin to understand what the author is trying to convey. The entire poem is an extended metaphor. “I’m lighting on my feet.” is a metaphor because she is not really as fast as lighting, she's just very fast. Also, “It’s like I got this music in my mind” is a simile because her feeling of knowing everything will work out is like music to her, it keeps her upbeat. Then, there is a hyperbole “I stay out too late, got nothing in my brain” Shows exaggeration. These examples only represent a fraction of the different forms, but are amongst the most well-known. The use of anaphora in a poem, by a poet, is one of the best ways to apply weight or emphasis on a particular segment. Not only does an anaphora place emphasis, but it can also aid in setting the tone, or over all “feel” a reader receives from a poem. Poets such as Walt Whitman, Conrad Aiken, and Frances Osgood provide poems that show how the use of anaphora can effect unity, feeling, and structure of a poem.
The second stanza begins with a series of rhetorical questions that express the woman's inner struggle. The second question is her response to the dark encroachment of the procession, and the third question answers the previous two. The randomness of this questioning illustrates the disorganized nature of her thinking, and an answer finally surfaces when she decides that "divinity must live within herself." A list of positive and negative emotions that she has experienced as a result of nature provides further explanation of the divinity she hopes she possesses within. The realization that these emotions "are the measures destined for her soul" ends the stanza with a feeling of hopefulness.
The second verse of the song states, “but I ain’t out of control, just livin’ by my word,” and that represents my free-spirited attitude towards life; I like to see all aspects of life as what they are objectively, and I don’t perceive different people, places, or things as “strange,” since they exist. The uppermost color of my artwork is yellow; that color is representative of imagination, and I personally do not believe in a definition of “normal.” The chorus states, “it doesn’t matter now what happens, I will never give up the fight,” which represents my resiliency towards blunders, adversity, and challenging situations. In fact, the median color of my artwork is orange, which is a color that represents energy and enthusiasm. The third verse states, “where do I stop, it’s all a blur and so unclear,” which represents my indecisiveness regarding long-term life plans.
The title of the song I will be analyzing is “Thing called Love” written by NF.This is an emotional rap rapping about how love could be a powerful emotion which can impact your life in a negative way and a positive. There is an abundant of themes in “Thing called Love” but, I believe the theme might be love can be something that can break us or it can help us grow. NF uses a diversity of figurative language devices,three of them are, personification, hyperbole ,and metaphor. In the chorus the personification is “This thing called love can be so cold”this is saying that love may not show any emotion or hospitality. The final stanza creates a vivid picture in your mind when read. If you can imagine anything that has to do with winning, or a victory of some kind, you can see what she is speaking about. For example, if someone was in a race, it would be better to see the winner cross the finish line, and know you almost made it; than to be so far behind that you had no chance of winning.
Ice is a powerful substance, having the ability to carry beauty wherever it goes, but it can carry danger as well. Like ice, people can be both good and bad; however, man’s power to decide can determine which way they fall in morality. In the movie Frozen’s pinnacle song “Let It Go,” Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez give the deuteragonist Elsa a lyrical introspection of escaping and running away from those whom she can hurt with her cold powers, and is now free to do whatever she wants in her mountain of isolation. Looking deeper into the song, however, Elsa’s troubled and misguided decision to evade her fears begin to surface and foreshadow her fate throughout the rest of the movie. Through the use of both figurative language and diction, “Let It Go” paints a vivid picture of the good in liberating oneself from fear and restriction, yet cautions the repressed soul of the bad in avoiding one’s problems.
