Theodore (‘Teddy’ or T.R.) Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 in New York City, New York. Teddy was the second born out of four children in his family. As a child I wouldn’t say he was the healthiest. He suffered from asthma and poor eye sight, which explains his glasses, throughout his childhood. Since he was sick all of the time he didn’t attend school, he was home schooled. His mom and sometimes aunt would be his teacher.
His family traveled around Europe, while they were in Europe, Teddy attended Harvard College in Germany. There he met, fell ‘in love’, and married Alice Hathaway Lee on October 22, 1880. Teddy came back to New York where he became a Republican Representative to the New York State Assembly for three terms (1882-18840. In 1884, Teddy’s wife Alice had their daughter, Alice Hathaway Roosevelt Jr. Two days later his mother died due to Typhoid fever , and within hours, his wife died due to a form of stomach cancer.
After both his mother and wife died, Teddy became depressed and threw himself in his political work. Teddy was so stressed that he couldn’t raise his own daughter so he gave her to his sister while he moved west to the frontiers. He lived there for a few years, raising cattle and being alone. He moved back east. When he moved back he married his childhood love, Edith Kermit Carow. They got married and had five boys.
In 1900, Teddy became Vice President under William McKinley. In 1901, William McKinley was assassinated and injured, they couldn’t save the president. Theodore Roosevelt was a great person and leader of our country. He took over when our country lost a president. Even through his lost and depression, Teddy came out perfectly fine. He always kept his head high and his guard higher. He’s a good influence on Today’s society. He made all the right choices. Everyone loved Teddy. He made the Panama Canal. He tried his best just to make our country a better place to live then it already is. I’m glad I got to do my project on Theodore Roosevelt. I learned so many things I didn’t know, and hopefully you did to. This is probably on of my favorite projects.

After returning to America from Cuba, Theodore was elected as the Vice President to President McKinley in 1900. However, in 1901, McKinley was assassinated and Theodore consequently became the president of the United States. At the age of 42, Theodore was the youngest person ever to be a U.S. president. Theodore did not wait long to make changes as the president. Theodore changed the name of the big white presidential building from “Executive Mansion” to “White House.”

Roosevelt’s achievements as a naturalist, explorer, hunter, author, and soldier are as much a part of his fame as any office he held as a politician. His legacy lives on as one of greatest leaders in American history.
He experienced life as a rancher which allowed him to relate to the working class citizens of America. He always kept the working classes best interest in mind and was fair to everyone. He was a war hero. He put his foot down and spoke out against political corruption. When it came to foreign and domestic affairs Teddy Roosevelt spoke softly but carried a big stick. He was prepared to use force when necessary but often used persuasion to avoid conflict and keep tranquility in the world. He didn’t let Congress push him around like how he threatened Congress to pass the Meat Inspection and Pure Food and Drug acts. He showed strength and interest in the future by dismantling monopolies, building the Panama Canal, and by preserving land. Teddy Roosevelt was a man who liked to creat a stir wherever he went. He loved mingling with people to boost his own self-image.He loved to impress people with his cowboyism, his collection of guns, and his pintsize spectacles.Also, Roosevelt was a direct-actionist.He wanted to keep the country moving foward and preserve his public image at the same time. He wanted to display to his supporters that he could lead the country and be a jovial person simulataneously. His public image seemed to be his first priority, and when the election of 1904 came approaching, he wanted to show that he could be a bully to smaller countries and impress his people back home.
Roosevelt was raised in a life of comfort and refuge by his parents in Dutchess County, New York (Brinkley). Up until he was fourteen, he was homeschooled by his parents and tutors. Later he attended Groton, a boarding school in Massachusetts and for the first time in his life, found himself surrounded by other boys his age. After graduating from Groton, Roosevelt went to Harvard where he began to get more socially involved by running for class office and becoming president of the school newspaper (Brinkley). He graduated in 1904 with mostly B's and soon after, married his fifth cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt (Feinberg 9-46). From then on, Roosevelt would become the senator of New York, an assistant secretary of the Navy, governor of New York, and eventually, president of the United States (Feinberg 9-46). Although Roosevelt did not earn very high grades in school, his teachers often mentioned he was incredibly intelligent. The education Roosevelt received while growing up may have guided him in his decision making throughout his presidential career.
