Shakespeare was a very fine play writer, who examined human nature and exposed it through literature. One of his famous plays, Romeo and Juliet, depict many different themes such as, fate vs. freewill, duty vs. self, feuds, appearance vs. reality, parents choose who we marry, love at first sight and confidante. Appearance vs. reality is one of the themes that are portrayed through out the play. It means, things aren’t always what they seem to be. Something or someone might appear to be another thing, but the reality is different. Romeo and Juliet show appearance vs. reality through out the play because of their secret marriage. Examples of appearance vs. reality are when Juliet finds out about Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s banishment. Juliet’s parents think that Juliet is crying about Tybalt’s death, but she is crying about Romeo’s banishment, when the couple (Romeo and Juliet) get married, but everybody thinks they are still single and when the nurse finds Juliet dead and the Capulet’s have an unnecessary funeral for Juliet even though she is not dead and had only swallowed Friar Lawrence’s potion, which put her into a long sleep.
Juliet cries a lot when she finds out about her husbands fate. Her parents think that she is grieving about the death of her cousin, but instead Juliet is crying for the murderer of her deceased cousin. The nurse brings Juliet the bad news about Romeo (Juliet’s husband) and Tybalt (Juliet’s cousin). She tells Juliet that Romeo has been banished form Verona for murdering Tybalt, who killed Mercutio. Thought out the story, Romeo and Juliet, there are many examples of appearance vs. reality. The examples discussed were when Juliet appears to be crying for Tybalt but she is actually crying for Romeo, when Romeo and Juliet get married in secret but it looks as if they are still single and when Juliet appears to be dead but instead is just in a deep sleep. Appearance vs. reality is a very interesting theme because it makes the story more suspenseful and gives it dramatic irony. There are many themes depicted in Romeo and Juliet but appearance vs. reality is a theme that is prominently portrayed through out the play. Romeo and Juliet is an amazing play filled with drama, irony and suspense and leaves the audience wanting for more.
Thought the play, these lovers go through many obstacles that range from arranging a wedding and finding a time to meet to Juliet trying to get out of marrying Paris. The entire time fate is tossing them around. Romeo realizes this after he kills Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, in a brawl. At first, Romeo does not want to fight because Romeo and Juliet are already married at this time and he knows that they are cousins. Tybalt asks for a brawl from Romeo but Mercutio fights instead. Mercutio gets killed by Tybalt and that is what makes Romeo mad and fight Tybalt.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a play commonly viewed and known as a true love story; however, after analyzing several hints portrayed by the protagonists, it is evident that Shakespeare did not intend to make Romeo and Juliet seem like a true love story but a criticism of how superficial society’s view on love is.
When there is a fight in the market place, Capulet rushes to fight for his honor, “my sword I say, old Montague is come...” Capulet denies Paris’ request to marry Juliet “ and too soon marred are those so early made,” acting for his own good because he wants Juliet to produce many offspring to carry on the Capulets bloodline, since she is his only surviving child. When at the ball Capulet demands Tybalt to let Romeo be,” content thee, gentle coz, let him alone,” but this just fuels Tybalts anger towards Romeo, which eventually ends up in Tybalt causing his own death. Capulet believes he is giving his child the best when he announces her engagement to Paris” she shall be married to this noble earl,” and believes Paris will make a good husband for Juliet. When Juliet refuses Capulet thinks it best to threaten her, “I will drag thee,” but this just makes Juliet turn to more drastic measures.

There are two families that hate each other Romeo's family the Montague's and Juliet's family the Capulet's. The families have hated each other for many generations. Romeo and Juliet met at a party even though Lord Capulet has found Juliet a husband but she doesn't like him and falls in love with Romeo who was previously in love with Rosaline. Romeo and Juliet get married in secret hoping in the long run that this deed will end the family feud but Juliet's family don't know about the wedding. Mercutio Romeo's best friend and Tybalt Juliet's cousin get into a fight and Mercutio dies but Romeo turns up and kills Tybalt. Romeo is banished to Mantua for killing Tybalt so Juliet isn't happy because she has lost two of the people she cares about most.
In the fair city of Verona, two rival families, the Montagues and Capulets were involved in a nasty family feud that goes back years before any of the members were born. Even the townspeople were involved in the dispute, because the families were always fighting in the streets and causing disturbances. They disrupted the streets of Verona and even Prince Escalus tried to break up the fighting. They were given a warning, by him that another public fight would result in death. While this was occurring, Romeo, (a Montague) the main character, was getting over his last love, Rosaline, and was very upset. Juliet of the Capulet household had just been introduced to a wealthy young man, Paris, whom her parents wished her to marry. Yet she did not love him. Romeo goes to a party in an effort to forget about Rosaline. At this party he met Juliet, and immediately fell in love with her. He later finds out that she is a Capulet, the rival family of the Montagues. He decides that he loves her anyway and they confess their love for each other during the very famous "balcony scene" in which they agreed to secretly marry the next day. Friar Lawrence agreed to marry them in an effort to end the feuding between the families. Unfortunately, the fighting gets worse and Mercutio (Montague) a good friend of Romeo ends up in a fight with Tybalt (Capulet), Juliet's cousin. Tybalt killed Mercutio, which caused Romeo to kill Tybalt in an angry rage. For this, Romeo is banished from Verona. At the same time, the Capulet's were planning Juliet's marriage to Paris. Juliet didn't want to marry this man so she arranges with Friar Lawrence to fake her own death with a sleeping potion that would make everyone think that she was dead. Friar Lawrence promised to send word to Romeo to meet her when the potion wears off and to rescue her to Mantua, where Romeo was currently staying. There they would live happily ever after. Unfortunately, Romeo didn't receive the message on time and upon hearing of her "death" went to Juliet's tomb where he drinks poison and dies. When Juliet's potion wears off, she wakes to find her lover's dead corpse. She then proceeds to stab herself with Romeo's dagger. The two families find the bodies and with their shared sorrow, finally make peace with each other.
William Shakespeare's story of two star-crossed lovers, a secret marriage, potions to simulate death and a tragic ending Romeo and Juliet conveyed a simple message to the readers, the pain of lost. Romeo and Juliet started with a feud from both sides until the time came that Romeo found true love, that he longed to find in Rosaline, in the eyes of Juliet. Both decided to get married the next day without giving their family the knowledge about their decision with their strong belief that their love is true and eternal. Romeo's best friend Mercutio was killed by Tybalt and Tybalt slain by Romeo for revenge at the same day causing him the misfortune of not spending his days and nights with Juliet because he was banished from Verona. Then came the faking of Juliet's death which just simply ended with both of them lying dead. Why do you think this took place in the story? Simply because facing the fact that Mercutio was gone was hard for Romeo, that his belief that Juliet is dead was hard to accept, while Juliet felt the same pain when he saw Romeo lying on the ground dead. You will never realize how important the person is to you until you really lost him.
In “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet,” William Shakespeare has given the characters realistic aspects. People can relate to Romeo's immature and rash nature, can admire Juliet's growth to maturity, and can find that their teen love is very convincing. To start off, Romeo is very rash and immature, especially when it comes to love. When talking about their relationship, Juliet even said, “It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden.” Furthermore, Romeo was obsessed with Rosaline but soon became infatuated with Juliet. Friar Lawrence have said, “Young men's love then lies not truly in his heart, but in their eyes.” This aspect of Romeo is realistic because it is a flaw people can relate to. In addition, when pertaining to love, people can relate to Juliet's growth from being a naïve, dependent girl to a matured adult. When Lady Capulet asked Juliet what she thought of marriage, Juliet said, “It is an honor that I dream not of.” But after she fell in love with Romeo, she became more mature when it came to love. After killing Mercutio, Tybalt’s inflated confidence and rising aggression leads him to fight his new, unknown cousin, Romeo. Consequently, Tybalt plants his own seed of fate with his aggression. Due to self-defense, Romeo kills Tybalt and then gets banished for his actions by the Prince. This marks the beginning of the end for Romeo and Juliet’s love. It presents the biggest challenge for the star-crossed lovers because it is their separation, and due to the strong love they are too young to handle, they self-destruct, both committing suicide.

Romeo’s impulsiveness is clearly shown through this quote that he states. The reason for Romeo’s impulsiveness is because he just recently met Juliet and he decides to marry her very quickly. This quote that Friar Lawrence states planted into the readers mind that Romeo might not be truly in love but rather infatuated. This tragic play takes place in fair Verona where a quarrel between two families takes place due to an ancient grudge. Both families, Montague and Capulet hate each other with a great passion. Two lovers named Romeo and Juliet are both from the two opposing families and they love and marry each other in secret without their families knowing. Because of their impulsiveness and rash decisions it causes them to lead themselves to die a tragic death. Romeo and Juliet were soon married and later that afternoon Juliet's cousin Tybalt kills Mercutio during a small fight in the street. Romeo sees this injustice and upon impulse kills Tybalt in revenge. Under the advice of his friends he flees the scene of the murder. Soon the prince finds out and he banishes Romeo from Verona. That same day Juliet finds out that her lover Romeo has been banished for killing her beloved cousin and she threatens to kill herself. She goes to friar Lawrence's cell and he gives her a strong sleeping potion. This strong potion will put her to sleep for a few hours so then she will appear dead; and not have to marry Paris like her father had arranged for her.

Meaning that in the story Juliet was a Capulet, and Romeo was a Montague, their families were enemies, meaning they did not at all like each other. Fate ties these adolescents’ lives together binding them to witness the ill-fortunes of Romeo and Juliet’s love. Romeo and Juliet prove themselves woefully impulsive through their words and actions, which ultimately lead them along a series of unfortunate mishaps.
