“Love Story” portrays the “Romeo and Juliet effect” (intensified romantic feelings due to the disapproval of parental units), by glorifying myth #1, suggesting that no force can pull two people apart who are destined to be together. The song also demonstrates myth #2 (love at first sight), as well as myth #10 (The right mate ‘completes you’…). While the lyrics suggest a “love conquers all” storyline, ultimately ending with a happy ending, the reality of this occurring is unlikely
Juliet refers to herself as a “scarlett letter. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet depicts a couple who are unfit for each other but in love, rather than a happy ending as “love story” entails, “Romeo and Juliet” ends in a double-suicide.
