THESIS STATEMENT Through conquest, Rome influenced British society and culture. PURPOSE STATEMENT The purpose of this paper is to discuss Rome’s influence on Britain and the changes to Britain’s culture and society after the Roman invasion. INTRODUCTION When Rome first began they were the powerhouse of their era, taking and conquering every country they had encountered. The Romans likely conquered as much countries, as much as they influenced, especially in Britain. Conquering Britain may have been the best and worst thing the Romans had ever did. Like a double edged sword, it both benefitted Rome and paved the way to Rome’s destined descent. PRE-ROMAN INVASION “Before the Romans invaded, Celts lived in Britain. There were lots of different tribes ruled by kings or chiefs” (Roman: Invasion). The most distinct, was the tribe known as the Celts. Post Roman Invasion, Britain received many benefits and were very well taken care of. But before, the Britons or the people known as the “Celts” were people who lacked technology and did most things manually. The Celts and their many tribes were ruled by kings and queens, and they were often in battle with each other. As savage as the Celts were, it had become apparent to them when the Romans invaded, that if they did not band together they would be eventually taken over. So this starts the rebellion and union of the people who were not taken over yet in Wales and Eastern Britain that lasted for thirty years. They put up a good fight but with the technology and power the Romans had, the Celts were overtaken by the people they scorned so much. Finally, by this time, Romans considered their emperor a god. But the Christians belief in one God-who was not the emperor weakened the authority and credibility of the emperor” (The Fall of the Roman Emperor). Since Christianity only worshipped one God, the once adherent pagans who had worshipped numerous gods quickly converted to Catholicism and started to fully believe in the faith. CONCLUSION The Roman Conquest of Britain allowed the Roman-Britain’s to become one the most prominent empires of its day. Influences that the Roman’s had brought over had greatly affected the Briton society and its economy. Conquering Britain, actually brought upon a Golden Age. In which, the second century was a time as the historian Gibbon said, “The period in the history of the world during which the condition of the human race was most happy and prosperous” (Lunt 23).
