Letters to a Young Poet “Letter One”, written by Rainer Maria Rilke, is a letter written by Rilke which contains advice for the aforementioned poet in the title of the piece. The reason for Rilke writing this piece was that a young, inexperienced poet sent Rilke a letter along with the poet’s own poems, which were called “My Soul” and “To Leopardi.” Rilke informs the poet that he is not comfortable with giving criticism, saying that “Nothing touches a work of art so little as words of criticism,” (p. 5). Instead of giving criticism, Rilke advises the poet on what first steps he should take in order to pursue a serious career in writing literature.
The tone of a piece of literature is directly dependent upon the word choice with which it is written. Word choice factors into the development of an important idea in the text and how that idea is developed throughout the text. The type of word choice used impacts the way with which both the tone and important ideas are developed in writing. The tone of a piece of literature changes with the word choice of the writer of the piece. If the word choice of the writer conveys a certain feeling or emotion, whether it is happy or sad, the tone will be directly impacted by this and changed accordingly.

Rilke uses words like “unsayable...”, “mysterious existences…”, and “small, transitory life.” (p. 5). This word choice causes the tone of the first paragraph to become somewhat mysterious, bringing about feelings of something akin to the fear of the unknown. In the second paragraph

One of the key factors that all living organisms share is the ability to adapt and respond to their environment. Of course, humans are no exception to this. People are easily influenced by the things surrounding them. Think of a child raised in a harsh area compared to one raised in a wealthy household- their lifestyles are likely to be different. This rule can be applied to literature, too. In Passing, Romeo and Juliet, and The Book Thief, the characters discussed are shaped by their social environments.
“Watch your tone young lady” a phrase known all too well to the American culture, whether it be from mom giving her children a lecture or on a television screen being spoken out by an actor. The tone of voice that one uses while speaking plays an extremely significant role in what the spoken words actually mean. Many times one can say one thing and mean another just from placing emphasis on a particular word. With tone of voice plays such a vital role in the meaning of a sentence it becomes clear that poetry, although often times found in books as written work, is meant to be read aloud; this was not all that clear to me until I attended my very first poetry reading. On November 10th Ramapo College welcomed the marvelous poet Mark Doty to its campus. Through Mark Doty’s reading of “House of Beauty” and “Theory of Marriage” it became clear that the use of emphasis and tone are vital characteristics that allows for the poet to challenge poetic traditions and conventions.

It goes, “Make them laugh, make them cry, make them wait.” By following these needs, an author can spark interest in his or her work. In the novels The Catcher in the Rye and Lord of the Rings, the novelists utilize the latter requirement, “Make them wait.” This essay will show how the authors use that specific demand in their novels.
It is often common to have an author or the writer of a certain poem write about similar topics and also reflect the same stylistic characters among his or her poems. In Peter Meinke’s two poems, titled Untitled and Advice to my son, he created them both using a specific tone and the same subject to create different themes. Both of these poems also included some of the important elements of poetry.
Literature has played a large role in the way we perceive the world and it can affect the way in which we think about things. Edgar Allan Poe along with Mark Twain are two of the most influential authors that our world has ever seen. Their descriptiveness and diction has had a huge impact on their readers for centuries. Poe’s gothic style of writing was very enthralling and suspenseful; it left you wanting to know what was going to happen next. Whereas, Mark Twain was a very humorous author that intended to amuse all that read. The descriptiveness that was incorporated by these world-renown authors is tremendous.
This book has a lot of tones to it but the ones that stood out a lot were irony and enduring . The first tone I chose was irony because the book has a little bit of ironic statements like “ …. Larissa’s life elsewhere would be quiet and serene as befit the old.. . This is irony because she is given the chance to die and irony is like sarcasm . I also think this book has a little bit of enduring to it because Joan’s sees something in his vision and goes to the top of the hill to get a sled and is trying is hardest to reach the top and he doesn't give up and that’s what enduring means showing braveness and never giving up.

Mood is the the atmosphere, climate, or feeling of a text while tone is the attitude and or feelings of the person presenting the story. “Adam” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and “Why soldiers won't talk” by John Steinbeck have two different moods and tones. Mood and Tone affects the way that the reader feels while reading the story.Sometimes all it takes to state the mood and tone is one sentence. While the tones of both stories are vastly different, there are similarities in there too.

In writing, tones dictate the reader’s understanding of the passage as much as diction and syntax. Tones can be benevolent or vindictive, biased or empirical, or humorous or stern. Unlike diction, tone is an abstract concept. Typically, it cannot fit any sort of definition, as it comes from the author’s attitude. There are some words, however, that show tones with clarity, albeit negatively. Critical, elitist, intimately personal, and humorous tones are strictly nonacademic. If the author successfully formulates a neutral, rational, objective, and empirical mood, the paper will most likely fulfill the academic requirements for an unbiased opinion. Even though tones cannot be universally defined, they are an innate part of every piece of writing and can change the reader’s reaction to the information.
In conclusion, the use of elements of post modernism add a richness to literature and to the reading experience of the reader. Elements such as irony, magic realism and fragmentation cause people to think and make connections between the literature they are reading and how it relates to their own lives and the lives of the authors and other readers. The short stories studied in Ms. Reynolds 4U English class all contained many effective post modern elements that made students go more in depth with their reading and understanding of noted English literature. Perhaps some people were enlightened and adopted a postmodern view on the world.
