Psychological Profile Ramirez had many characteristics that could be similar to a typical serial killer. There are a great number of traits that can make a serial killer who they are. There are also upbringings that can make a serial killer act a certain way. Experiences and certain events can cause them to become the serial killer they are. Serial killers can also become who they are not just because of their surroundings, but because they want to. Sometimes they want revenge on somebody and then it just continues on because it becomes a habit. Characteristics of a serial killer include: alcohol and substance abuse, psychological abuse during childhood, sexually stressful events in childhood, bed-wetting, growing up lonely and isolated, fantasies, preferring auto-erotic activities, developing voyeurism and fetishism in adulthood, acting out fantasies on animals, and physical injuries (Gerber 2). There are quite obviously more traits that are typical of a regular serial killers, but these ten appear to be the most common amongst them. The crimes more than likely began because of his troubled childhood and the people around him. Ramirez was greatly influenced by all the things happening around him. Mike definitely had the greatest impact because of all the graphic and realistics things he showed and talked about. He even killed his own wife right in front of Ramirez, all because of an argument. Thrill seekers kill for the sole purpose to entertain themselves. They also want attention from the media. Thrill seekers send messages and keep a record of their killings. Most of the time something triggers them and then they go on their serial rampage. Serial killers have many frightening facets. The most frightening thing about them is that experts still do not know what makes a human become a serial killer. Many experts believe serial killers become what they are because they have a genetic disposition or brain abnormality while other experts believe that a serial killer is created by childhood abuse; and some other experts believe that it is a combination of both brain abnormalities and abusive childhood experiences that creates a serial killer. A murderer is considered a serial killer when they “murder three or more persons in at least three separate events with a “cooling off period” between kills” (Mitchell and Aamodt 40). When defining a serial killer, their background, genes, and brain are not mentioned; perhaps one day those aspects of the serial killer can be included.
So what makes a serial killer? Levin points out that contrary to popular belief, serial killers don't just 'snap'; or 'go crazy'; (Douglas, p. 137). Jack Levin stated 'Research shows many serial killers suffered abuse, incest or neglect as children and develop poor self images'; (Douglas, p. 137). Serial killers often have a childhood marked by the absence of any nurturing relationship. 'They often come from families where the parents were absent or ineffective, where authority was not defined, and where they could engage in destructive behavior undeterred-violent play, cruelty to animals, and incidents of arson being some of the childhood behavior patterns noted among many serial killers'; (Clark, p. 206).
Richard Ramirez was born on February 29, 1960 in El Paso, Texas; his father’s name was Julian. His father Julian was a railway worker, and formerly a policeman in Juarez, Mexico (Richard Ramirez). His mother’s name is Mercedes, she worked in a boot making factory while pregnant with Richard. At the boot factory they used chemicals that are now know to cause problems with pregnancies. She was mixing the chemicals benzene, xylene, and toluene (Prolific Killers). When he was 2 he received 30 stitches after a dresser had fell on him. Then again when he was 5 he was knocked unconscious by a swing set. From these two incidents Ramirez developed epilepsy suffering grand mal seizures (Prolific Killers). These are the types of seizures that you picture when you hear the word seizure. They have violent muscle spasms and loss of consciousness. When he was a kid his cousin Mike came back from Vietnam. Richard Ramirez also known as "The Night Stalker" was a notorious serial killer who tormented the lives of Los Angeles residents by raping, sodomizing, murdering, and torturing random citizens of the community. Ramirez was addicted to cocaine and was a Satan worshiper. His rain of torture throughout 1985 included over 29 victims. He has already outlived some of the victims that survived his attacks. In 1985 Ramirez was captured by an angry mob of citizens.
Serial killers have captivated the attention of scientists from the first signs of their existence to modern day. Interested by these killers’ inhumane actions, researchers set out to determine the cause of such graphic, horrific crimes. The brain has been brought into question regarding the motivation of these cold blooded killers. After extensive research, abnormalities of both the chemical composition and material makeup have been identified within the brains of numerous serial killers. These differences are more than mere coincidence, they are evidence that killers do not think in the same way. The killers’ drives and motives are irregular, just as their brains are. Not only are these variations interesting, but they are also crucial to the justice system in regards to the punishment of past, future, and present sequential murderers. It is important that as a society we learn the differences in the mind of a killer, and also recognize and understand them. Cubillos, also known as “the beast” needed to feel god like. He had the worst fantasies but the fantasies were better than real life. He would recreate the murders and soon about 172 young boys became victims of him.
Ricardo Munoz Ramirez was born in El Paso, Texas on February 29, 1960. He was unfortunately given a very low class home with three brothers, one sister and a mom and dad. Most people called him Richard while he was young and, that name stuck around with him through his life. His father, Julian, was a very busy and stressed man. Julian had so much built-up anger because of this stress which made him abusive, especially towards Ramirez. His mother, Mercedes appeared to be much different than his father. She was a stay at home mom who cared very much for her children. He pursued the life of a criminal because of his family around him, including his father and especially his cousin, Mike. Mike impacted Ramirez in a way nobody else had. Ramirez committed his first murder on June 28, 1984. He was only 24 at the time. He went on to commit thirteen murders total and many more crimes within the span of two years. He was eventually apprehended on August 30, 1985 and was sentenced to jail for life along with 19 death sentences. While in jail, he suffered from liver failure and died in a hospital bed (Blanco 3).
