Barbaric And Courageous “The world is made up of two classes the hunters and the huntees” (2). Rainsford believes the people are either aggressive or passive. The aggressive people succeed and survive. On the other hand, the passive people are more accepting and allowing. “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell, the author, Rainsford and General Zaroff are both aggressive people in the story. Rainsford becomes trapped on Ship Trap Island and meets a man named General Zaroff that hunts humans, he stayed alive by killing General Zaroff. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford is clever and determined. While running from General Zaroff, he makes several traps.

The story “The Most dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell introduces an adventurous type of thriller with two main characters named Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. Both of which are hunters who in the story play a “game” invented by General Zaroff out of pure fear of becoming bored of the hunt. General Zaroff is a big fan of the hunt and everything he says about the hunt is to be taken serious. Rainsford and General Zaroff are described to be excellent hunters through the traps Rainsford makes, all the big game Zaroff has hunted, but Zaroff is better at hunting through the fact that the hunt has began to bore and he needs more of a challenge hunting humans.
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. Rainsford is a hunter. He was on a yacht that crashed and he was the only survivor. The island that he swam to was named “Ship Trap Island.” This where General Zaroff lived. He is also a hunter. He has hunted anything you can think of. Even… people. He has the survivors from the ship wrecks “play” his “game.” The survivors go out into the jungle and General Zaroff goes out and finds them. They have three days to survive. If they don’t get caught in those three days, they win. If they lose… they are killed. This happened to Rainsford. Rainsford, thankfully, won the “game.” He shot General Zaroff after his win.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.

Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is the story of a hunter that becomes the hunted. The story explores the sense of extreme terror the protagonist feels being pursued by a psychopath living on a mysterious island. This protagonist, Rainsford, has many traits that aid him in his battle with the general. By demonstrating his cunning, sly, and remorseful traits, Rainsford shows the story’s theme of “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes”.

During Rainsfords journey to and through the island of General Zaroff he partakes in an adventurous journey filled with mystery, suspense, and dilemma. Chief Red Jacket uses a variety of techniques in rhetoric in his quote to the “white men.” When he starts out by saying, “brother” he establishes a close relationship by showing respect to the white men. Moving on, the next two sentences both start out with “you say that you are…,” which shows the technique of parallelism and repetition. What he did there really pushes his point forward and makes his point, if you will, “sticky.” In the second sentence, he uses, “Great spirit,” instead of the White men's God. By doing this he makes the White men understand that his people and he will not accept the white men's religion. Even though games are meant to entertain and excite all players, in the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Rainsford, the protagonist, goes through life-or-death of situations as a game of hunting humans made by the antagonist, General Zaroff. Rainsford has to adapt to these situations as they happen for three days trying to stay alive using what he knows as a hunter. However, Rainsford isn’t hunting but the one being hunted by the insane man, Zaroff, with multiple tactics to kill Rainsford. Throughout “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford struggles with man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self-situations while using his background knowledge, sanity and adaptability.

In Richard Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford, an avid hunter, is lost at sea, stranded on “Ship-Trap” Island-every sailor’s worst nightmare. Rainsford goes through a series of events that prove to be life-altering. Even though Sanger Rainsford went through many trials and tribulations, he never lost his intelligence, composure, or his bravery.

The characters in “The Most Dangerous Game” symbolize those of the figures of the underworld in Greek mythology. General Zaroff said, “Ivan once had the honor of serving as official knouter to the Great White Czar, and he has his own ideas of sport.” A knouter is almost like a punisher, it is a person that whips criminals or captives with a leather whip, or knout. Ivan symbolizes the Roman god Thanatos. Thanatos represents death. He takes orders from the gods to kill certain mortals or even gods.
