The TED Talk “Why 30 is not the new 20” by Meg Jay, was a powerful and successful speech. Jay delivers an inspirational message to twenty-year-olds to not waste away important years of their life in an unmeaningful relationship or career. Instead she stresses the importance of searching for a life-long partner sooner rather than later in life. She also talked about taking career risks while still young, because these opportunities will likely be indefeasible later in life. Jay 's main points were very effective in persuading one to consider living by this set of social standards. Jay used ethos, by telling the audience that she was a psycho therapist who specialized in twenty-somethings. This gave the audience the understanding that Jay has the credibility to speak on this topic. Meg then went on to list various statistics that supported her main points, such as when she said that “we know that eighty percent of life 's most defining moments take place by age thirty five” (TED Talk). These statistics are a clear usage of logos, or the appeal to logic. Many times during the presentation, Jay used the appeal of pathos, by appealing to the emotions of the audience. An example of this, is when she said “... it 's realizing that you can 't have that career that you want. You can 't have that child that you want ... ” (TED). Another example of pathos, was when Jay spoke about son 's and daughters coming into to speak to her. Jay even used mythos effectively, by talking about the desire of many to achieve the societal norms of having a successful career and starting a family. In the “180” movie Ray Comfort outstandingly used rhetorical appeal throughout his argument in a thorough way to further grasp his audience’s attention. He used pathos, ethos, and logos during the course of his dispute of abortion and the Holocaust. Because of Keller’s use of pathos to grab attention, using a strong, independent ethos and then backing it up using logos, it was easy to get wrapped up in her cause. Keller’s style was effective and left the audience with the desire to take action.
In this example Lennon plays with our sympathy, telling stories of how Roberto was one of two hundred prisoners that were trying to get accepted into the college program that only seats twenty three. He ends with a quote from his mother “How you think is how you act”(Lennon 3). This saying by his mother, is comparing the inmates attitudes going into jail and how if educated how they can change when coming out. In this argument by John J. In regards to her pathos persuasions she uses detailed and emotion-packed quotes in order to provoke her audience’s emotions. When it comes to her ethos persuasions, she uses them intermittently throughout her article by referencing her job title as an instructor and clearly establishing her themes and goals of the article in order to create a credible and dependable persona for her audience. In Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, pathos, logos and ethos are evidently and effectively used to persuade the audience into believing Caesar was not ambitious and that he was an innocent man. Throughout the speech the citizens were easily persuaded, but Anthony’s intellectual speeches made the audience question and imagine what they have turned into. Anthony used these three rhetorical appeals to win back the citizens just like many people do today. The power of pathos, logos and ethos in a speech can change one mind in an instant and if successfully used can change a mind to be fully persuaded without confusion.
“A Generation of Slackers? Not So Much” written by Catherine Rampell is an informative article about today’s millennial generation after high school. It provides the reader with a deeper look into young people’s work ethic, or what some to think to be, lack-there-of. The author does a fantastic job using research, credible resources, and statistics to support her belief that Generation Y (children born in the 1980s and 1990s) is no less productive than previous generations. I will admit that before reading this piece, I was one of those who believed that Millennials were in fact the “coddled, disrespectful and narcissistic generation” (Rampell, 2011, para 3). She mentions how one’s ACE score directly affects their life. Information via pathos is not in statistics, but rather just words and how it is brought across the audience. Her word choice is strong throughout her talk, giving a question to the audience in the beginning of her talk asking, “How many of you know/knew someone has/had a mental illness when growing up.” This appeal to emotion grabs the audience’s attention as Harris attempts to relate her talk to everyone there. Her slow yet concise way of speaking, coupled with easy to follow transitions allowed for a speech that was enjoyable to listen to. Her use of examples from her personal life allowed her audience to get a picture of who she was if they did not know, and allowed her to better relate to them by provided examples of how she is related to the college they are graduating from. Her reference to many modern political problems allowed her to bring up her important role as an activist and facilitated further understanding from the audience. While some areas of her speech were weak, such as the longer than needed pauses and her lack of consistent eye contact, to a few points where she didn’t speak clearly enough, the overall picture that was her speech was fairly strong. Looking at this speech, I hope to incorporate some aspects that I failed to include in my previous speeches. Some of these include her use of hand gestures to emphasize and exaggerate certain phrases and topics, and her combined use of appeals. These Ted Talk are given by Sheryl Sandberg (Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders), the current COO of Facebook, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (The danger of a single story), a novelist. In both Ted Talks, these women address the issue that relate to their place of expertise. Repeatedly throughout the Ted Talks, Sandberg and Adichie bring up the challenges and issues that are current in their place of work while also adding their personal stories and insight. As a result, they bring awareness to these issues to all those involved in that specific place of work; and they are able to effectively explain the points presented in the presentation. Joshua Foer, who delivered the TED talk that I was assigned to watch, starts his lecture off in a very unique way. He instructs the audience to all close their eyes and imagine that they are standing outside the front door of their house, and a group of nude, overweight cyclist is barreling towards you. Foer goes on to lead the audience through their imaginary house, stopping in each room to add a seemingly irrelevant and completely obscure character, such as the Cookie Monster or Britney Spears, to their image of the inside of their home. Joshua then tells the audience to open their eyes and moves on with his lecture.
I consider Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005 to be one of the most effective speeches. He uses mechanics of speech to craft a well-rounded speech that is crowned by his use of rhetorical devices. Jobs gives relevant and fundamental knowledge of his life and experiences with his rhetorical approach. In his speech to the Stanford’s graduation class, he tells different stories of love, loss, discovery and difficulty he faced in his life to encourage new graduates as they continue to mature in life. He encourages students to pursue their dreams and not be discouraged by failures they might experience in life.
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
